Also, on the subject of Uboat. I think I largely agree with you. However, it has had a major update recently adding loads of new exciting features. Could I be so bold as to suggest a breakdown video from you where you simply go through your likes and dislikes? I'd be very interested in your thoughts.
"The Soviet Union was a huge country, and we knew from the outset that the campaign would be protracted and costly. The impact on our operations in the Atlantic was immediate and serious. The diversion of resources to the Eastern Front meant that our supply lines and maintenance support for the U-boats became increasingly strained." -Captain Herbert A. Werner, U-953 Karl Donitz is definitely known to have voiced serious reservations about the timing, which were shared by virtually all the branch commanders as far as I'm aware. An invasion of the USSR was something everyone but Stalin seemed to know was imminent but rushing to launch that invasion in 1941 and walking face-first into the impossible logistical challenges that would impose, was not a popular position amongst the branch commanders or even the planners of Operation Barbarossa.
Thank you for great entertanment. Yes RAF had an operationel airfield in reykavik from July 1941 - 45. Another little thing The Radio message Said Cruiser Uss Texas, Uss Texas was a Battle ship Comissioned in 1914. It was active in WW 2. And is today a Museum ship. Keep up the good work and looking forward to more.
Finally caught up to the latest episode after about a month of watching I think? I very rarely leave comments on videos but in this case after so many hours of watching the series I feel obliged to do so. I am really enjoying the series that much is obvious, but what I like even more is how much I have learned regarding getting all the data needed for the TDC and how to approach ships and even more importantly evade escorts. I have just finished my 5th full realism patrol and I have to say you inspired me greatly to play on those settings making those torpedo impacts all the more rewarding! I still miss a lot and rely on my deck gun while I still can and if the weather even permits it. To make this short, you've inspired me a lot and I have learned so much not just about the game but even the little historical references and facts. Thank you for playing and sharing your amazing experience with this game!

I fell a long way behind on your let’s play, but I’m back on track! Beyond the game I think it’s vital for everyone to be open and honest with their country’s history. Your rumination on operation Barbarossa and the start of the European theatre of conflict was brilliant. My grandfather was in the Royal Navy and served on destroyers in the Atlantic, the PQ convoys to Arkangel in Russia and then in the Mediterranean. He was very quick to forgive and forget, but would regularly return to Malta in the forty or fifty years after the war. What I like best is that we, as citizens of Germany and Great Britain, can enjoy a simulation of events from the war free of blame and recrimination. That said? I’ll never attack a Hunt Type 2 destroyer so as to avoid killing my granddad!
I really enjoy your videos and appreciate what you do. If anyone deserves money from doing this then you definitely do. I love all the series you do. So from a simple old yorkshire man. Thank you
That aircraft is an Armstrong Whitworth Whitley, a mainstay of Bomber Command up until around 42’ First operational in a proper capacity as a patrol aircraft for Coastal Command in late 41’ with the introduction of the GR MK.VII However I think the type had already been integrated into Coastal Command in earlier guises
good to see this series again! i love your narrative, particularly like the smell of the new boat description, its like watching an animated war story.
57:36 Looks like an Avro Manchester, the precursor of the Lancaster, to me. But those where used by Bomber Command, not for anti-sub patrols, says wikipedia ... Oh, scratch that, it's an Armstrong Whitworth A.W.38 Whitley. One of the 146 MkVII, which had RADAR and flew with Coastal Command. Both planes look very similar, but the tailplane is clearly different.
Great episode! I almost thought at the beginning you were going to say you were transferred to the Luftwaffe as an Me109 pilot haha. I think the type VII C was the right choice for all the reasons you cited.
@@STG42_44 Nope, def not a Focke Wulf of any variant. Look again at the nose cowling alone - the Fw had a radial engine. I don´t remember if any Me109´s had twin cannons in the wings (there were so many variants , it may be possible) - more likely is that this is creative license by whoever created the image map for the plane. But, again, I don´t recall each and every of the numerous me109 variants made...
@@ssmith5048 They did except for towards the latter part of the war there were some developmental versions that got made, and one of these got forced into series production ahead of schedule but they blew chunks in everything but instrumented tests.
@ssmith5048 @STG42_44 it looks to me like a late BF-109E model, likely an E-4. The late (by that I mean like 5,6,7) E variants of the 109 were the only ones to have cannons in the wings as standard. The F variant came after and put all the guns in the nose but gun-pods on the wings were able to be used.
Well, in SH5 you can actually do full celestial navigation with the sextant, all by yourself, you dont actually need the navigator or the script. Its a little bit tricky and counterintuitive sometimes, because celestial objects dont move correctly with time compression, but works. But its not that important at all, to use it you pretty much have to have a few miles precise dead reckoning position, its rather a check on it, I found that the attack disk gives a suprisingly good reading regaring to speed and distance traveled in a given timeframe. Also Wilhelmshaven has a radio beacon next to it as far as I remember, so you wont end up in Cuxhaven :D, although I mostly refill in Helgoland early on, its 55 deg from the Wilhelmshaven tower. Manual diveplane control is awesome, although I use it very cautiously, once I made a deckgun run on some poor fishermen, and set the fore diveplanes to full upwards, to give more stability to my aim, then a destroyer showed up, I ran into the conning tower in full panick mode, smashing the crashdive button, then nothing happened, while the bullets were whistling near the boat, then I realized, that the diveplanes are still full upwards, so the ship cant dive. Rookie mistake, for a 80 ton ship I almost lost my boat. Fortunately the dumb AI saved my beloved crew, their aim was even worse than mine. I got their pings, received their gifts, then they went away, they didnt even cared about the trawler in fire next to them. Other times they know exactly what they are doing, pinging me from multiple directions then turning on my six and doing an exact run on my course, playing this game for hours, although I noticed Tommies are really pissed off and professional, if you managed to sink some ships next to them, otherwise they dont really care thatmuch. Planes, yeah they dont chase me thatmuch if Im underwater, but they arent exactly idiots, once I shadowed a small convoy trying to get into firing position, and a pesky plane forced me to crashdive 3 times, he too somehow followed the convoy, he even called in three destroyers on my boat, who knew exactly where I am. So SH5 with GWX is not that bad at all for me, although I would say it has its stability problems, everyone is better off not saving 100 km close to any landmass, plane, ship, or Albatros, because it wont be a pleasant experience, and its infinitely more moddable than SH3.
Celestial navigation is also possible in SH3. There is a Python script mod that reads your position and transfers it to Stellarium where you can take sextant readings and calculate your position.
I know I've already shared your channel with at least one guy who sounded like he was really, genuinely interested in your content, Toncs - Hopefully he's sitting at home in Denmark enjoying your content at this very moment ;)
The best sh3 series is back boys! Smell that salty air and diesel fumes! I look forward to next episode. What I often think about is we all talk about making it to the end alive, imagine what it was like for real U-boat captains. The war was getting harder and harder, going on longer and longer and they had no idea how or when the war would end, scary stuff.
Iceland was occupied by British forces in may 1940.... And the plane was a : whitley. I'm not sure if whitleys operated from Iceland tho.. Greetings bibia
Ending your shore leave with an illness and returning to a surprise mechanical failure, yeah that sounds about right for a Submariner. You're really striving for authenticity there. lol
Finally a new episode. After starting playing SH3 with GWX Onealex I just wished that the BdU was a little bit more realistic: creating Wolfpacks and more radio messages directed to your boat. But sadly there are some limitations and SH3 is kinda old. I don’t know if anyone feels the same.
Armstrong Whitworth Whitley medium bomber. No it doesn't look like a Wellington - those have a single tall vertical stabiliser at the tail and more pointed wing tips. My stepfather flew as navigator on one so as you'd expect I'm VERY familiar with the Wellington!
@Tonci87 Although we talked in the comments about it, I appreciate you addressing that last point about the Type IX out loud here in the video, Toncs - I certainly can't argue that you'll necessarily be more in the thick of things in a Type IX than a Type VII, since you have far less flexibility when it comes to your operational range, obviously, lol 🙃 ...No, you want to experience 'the crucible', and you won't be dissuaded, brave/foolhardy bastard that you are, so I guess all I can say is... Good Luck, Herr Kaleun... You're gonna need it 😅🥲
The invasion of Island by the British took place in may 1940. The reason was for fear of a german invasion following the fall of Denmark in April. By June 1941 the airfields were operational. Dont know what most Uboat captains though of the invasion of the soviet union. Good question!. Good to see you back out at sea. Good luck captain!
49:12 min@ I have not spoken to German navy soldiers but to some of the Wehrmacht and SS and they were aware of the two front war but of the opinion, in short, that if they had not attacked first, the Soviet Union would have done so... that was a short answer to a complex topic, if you want more detailed answers just ask.
It might be time to re-evaluate uboat since its full release. Its gameplay settings are very flexible so you can really tailor it to whatever playstyle you prefer.
Apparently, it used to be pretty 'iffy' as a proper sim - I've heard it's way better now, but maybe Toncs isn't of that opinion, for whatever reason 🤷♂
I've heard these rumors too and they are persistent. While Uboat is certainly more accessible and relies on one or two disproven things here or there, I haven't found a reason to directly and fully dismiss it as a sim. Yeah Uboat has less stuff in it than modded SH3, that's to be expected but other than that it should still be good. The only thing I can think of is there was a sort of low key toxic feud between American elements of the Wolfpack/SH and Uboat sub-communities, specifically linked to how Neal at Subsim supports Wolfpack monetarily, but not Uboat (when Uboat almost immediately got picked up by Playway), some of this toxicity may have bled over to European elements? I donno 🤷♀
37:36 per US naming conventions, Texas should have been a battleship, not a cruiser (and indeed there is a Texas battleship, BB-35) as state names were used for battleships and city names were used for cruisers. Is this a transcription of an actual message that was historically sent, or is that some flavor made up for a mod?
Hey, Captain! Glad to have you back! I hope you enjoyed your vacation, even though getting sick during it is always a drag. I was wondering-what do you do for work? Totally understand if you’d rather not say, just curious. Can't wait for the next episode!
Well, Wolfpack345 has survived his SH3 campaign for some time, though he did start with a Type VII b so yeah... Only Tonci here has survived this long starting with such an underdog sub
There is a mod called All Weather Guns that lets you use the deck and flak guns whenever. You can just choose not to use the deck gun in bad weather. Not sure if it affects the foul weather clothing that the crew wears though.
One really annoying side of the Type IX is that you are assigned to sectors with practically no shipping, so I usually end up going back to the Irish coast after spending a few months off of Africa. EDIT: In real life airplanes wouldn't drop any ordinance after 40 seconds after you dive. Once the submarine is below 40 meters it is just waste of ordinance. They could orbit around, or move away and then return back. Late in the war with sonobuoys and MK24 mines they could track a fully submerged submarine and still attack it.
This game is incredible... I mean i played the recent uboat 2 month ago, and many civil sim because i was pretty tired of war....And i must admit that an old moded sim still surpass most of the game i tried last month. In term of the portrayal of the sea, the weather or the sailing, the level control available . For instance i tried : fishing north atlantic, barents, and this one called "something" catch : the game or the better stormwork). While virtual sailor ng which is quite above the rest ( variety of the fauna and sea bed, actual. sonar, radar, waves) unfortunatly it offer no fishing expérience, transport of passenger, crews, or a even a model dammage for the boats and cherry on the cake the game is poorly optimised. I would breed the two games 😂 anyway pleasant video thanks !
When this campaign wraps up, however that may be, I think it would be interesting if you did a U-boat campaign in SH4 with the Fall of the Rising Sun mod, The Gruppe Monsu is not really talked about that much.
sh3 is still the best sub game out there... uboat looks nice but still has a lot of things to iron out! the only bad thing is i cannot get sh3 to play in remoteplay together with my friend... i always wanted to have a coop carrier in the game
Hi, will you do a tutorial on uboats TDC and associated stations in german at some point? Wolfpack345 already did an amazing job in english, but I see a lot of german players are being pretty lost about it. 😅 Would be great and appreciated by the community I'm sure. 🙂
If you saw an American warship and it was impeding your attack on a convoy would you sink it as I would without a second thought. Im positive this happened more times than historically documented.
I just recently got into Submarine games because of UBOAT and very quickly started hearing about SH3 but also heard about how it can be a pain to get running on modern hardware. Is there a specific place I should get SH3 so that it would run properly? Steam reviews specifically make it seem like its a coinflip as to whether or not it would work on a modern machine.
37:37 maybe a stupid question but to waht does Würzburg refer in those messages did this mean something like uregent simular to „break break break“? Supper Let’s Play btw äusserst unterhaltsam
I really think your prejudice against UBoat is playing a big role here, as it was with me. Just try the new version at 100% realism and see that the game has improved beyond SH3 (in certain and most ways, but not in all!)
if you ask this chat probably most will diss uboat for variated reasons. I take no issue with this. I also consider silent hunter an ancient majestic relic of old and I embrace the new uboat as the one to love.
Uboat with mods in the future has more potential because it's a modern Unity engine based game, but the complete modpacks/overhauls have yet to be there for realism sake. SH3 vanilla is worse than Uboat if we compare apples to apples, but no one plays SH3 vanilla anymore, it's as bad as playing Skyrim vanilla more or less. So the general comparison falls between SH3 GWX OneAlex (the holy graal without a doubt, the best this game can provide) against Uboat vanilla for the most part despite interesting mods being here already. It's just that if you download the entirety of Uboat's Steam Workshop, it will lack in some realism aspects here and there still. So it's up to modders to give Uboat some more love and actually try to beat GWX which is doable without lacking respect to this fabulous mod. Also, we have to bring up the fact that the old guys who did GWX Gold are currently working on GWX Knight's Cross Edition, a new supermod for SH3 which aims to be different. It's soon in a beta state, they pretty much completed most features, I have heard that they compared it to Combat Flight Simulator 3, a very infamous flight sim game I actually played as a kid in the same times the OG IL-2 Sturmovik got released (don't play that game though, play IL-2 1946 instead) with the entire campaign gameplay which changes based on your actions. Like when you flew for the Luftwaffe, you could actually change the course and win the war if you were doing good in this game pushing the front line helping the war effort instead of being a linear "take your orders, do X and Y at Z".
I served in the 2nd Flotilla on a Type 7B, I wanted to change to 7C like Tonci. I transferred to the 7th Flotilla to St.Nazaire, but I could not choose 7C. I am in 1941 august, so it should not be a problem. I have more than enough renown. I tried to transfer to 1st Flotilla Brest, than I could change only Type 2. Anybody have idea what is the problem? At 2nd Flotilla I could change to type 9B and 9C. Only the 7C unavaible to me, but everywhere. ???
Tiny bit disappointed you didn't go for the Type IX, but oh well. The bit of SH5 that I miss the most is the Enigma machine. It didn't get old for me at all. I loved it. 44:40 Not just in Russian history books. In Western history books as well, since most of academia is openly communist.
The war started in 1936-1939 when the Western Antente powers supported with N Germany expansion into Czechoslovakia and Austria. Also with the allowing of German troops to military occupy the Rhein Region once again, and the allowing of N Germany to militarize into full force. Fun fact, the Soviet Union was the first Nation to open a front against Fascism in Spain. And the Molotov Ribbentrop páct was not a alliance, but a sphere of influence and non Agression pact, the same one that France, the Uk, Poland etc signed with N Germany before the Ussr. Also it only came into effect once the Western powers did not want to sign a alliance with the USSR 7 days before the pact. So no. This is New German History lie that the War started with the USSR and N Germany while the Hole Europe was Given to the F.rer on the plate by the West,.

Apparently, it used to be pretty 'iffy' as a proper sim - I've heard it's way better now, but maybe Toncs isn't of that opinion, for whatever reason 🤷♂
@@thisherehandleIdospout that's what I heard as well.... And as you said, what would interest me are the reasons Toncs thinks it isn't good....
I donno 🤷♀
43:26 - "Let me tell you about Carthage."
50:17 it is especially funny to hear it if you are from city which was approached by Germans on 23rd of June.
There is a mod called All Weather Guns that lets you use the deck and flak guns whenever. You can just choose not to use the deck gun in bad weather. Not sure if it affects the foul weather clothing that the crew wears though.
Another Whitley, Wellingtons have 1 vertical tail and a more rounded fuselage thanks to their geodetic design.
Finally it's back :)
Would a Typ IX campaign maybe something for SH4 in the pacific?
One really annoying side of the Type IX is that you are assigned to sectors with practically no shipping, so I usually end up going back to the Irish coast after spending a few months off of Africa.
EDIT: In real life airplanes wouldn't drop any ordinance after 40 seconds after you dive. Once the submarine is below 40 meters it is just waste of ordinance. They could orbit around, or move away and then return back. Late in the war with sonobuoys and MK24 mines they could track a fully submerged submarine and still attack it.
Good Show
This game is incredible... I would breed the two games 😂 anyway pleasant video thanks !
no airfield on Torshavn, Faroe Islands but there is one at Kirkwall and Lerwick though
Correction that is an Battleship

We’re so back sh3 bros
When this campaign wraps up, however that may be, I think it would be interesting if you did a U-boat campaign in SH4 with the Fall of the Rising Sun mod, The Gruppe Monsu is not really talked about that much.
Whats your opinion about the new subsim Uboat compared to sh3
sh3 is still the best sub game out there... uboat looks nice but still has a lot of things to iron out! the only bad thing is i cannot get sh3 to play in remoteplay together with my friend... i always wanted to have a coop carrier in the game
I wonder if we'll see a moddes SH4 playthrough after that one ends? Maybe with Trigger Maru or some other excellent overhaul mod?
Really missing a U-80 update!
even if you chose the TypVIIC this time, i really hope if you ever Switch boats again you wil pick a TypIX
Hi, will you do a tutorial on uboats TDC and associated stations in german at some point?
Wolfpack345 already did an amazing job in english, but I see a lot of german players are being pretty lost about it. 😅
Would be great and appreciated by the community I'm sure. 🙂
As much as I would like to see you in a type 9, I would much rather see you in a Tiger!
We are back (with a new boat)
If you saw an American warship and it was impeding your attack on a convoy would you sink it as I would without a second thought. Im positive this happened more times than historically documented.
I would love to hear what you think about Uboat
I just recently got into Submarine games because of UBOAT and very quickly started hearing about SH3 but also heard about how it can be a pain to get running on modern hardware. Is there a specific place I should get SH3 so that it would run properly? Steam reviews specifically make it seem like its a coinflip as to whether or not it would work on a modern machine.
37:37 maybe a stupid question but to waht does Würzburg refer in those messages did this mean something like uregent simular to „break break break“? Supper Let’s Play btw äusserst unterhaltsam
Name of the commanding officer of the submarine
Its a type of land based radar used against aircraft. Go on TH-cam and type in Operation Biting.
I really think your prejudice against UBoat is playing a big role here, as it was with me. Just try the new version at 100% realism and see that the game has improved beyond SH3 (in certain and most ways, but not in all!)
Algorithm 👍👍
I miss the blub blub blub 🫧 sound
Is the VIIC/41 a thing in this game? Can you possibly get a thicker pressure hull if you survive long enough?
Yes it is, and its an absolute beast if you survive long enough to get one 👌
Is there a sub sim where you can control a British submarine?
What's the general consensus on UBOAT? How does it shape up to SH3?
if you ask this chat probably most will diss uboat for variated reasons.
Dont forget the Munich conference and the sellout of Tjechoslovakia whatever spelling
Why is your new boat all rusty?
I served in the 2nd Flotilla on a Type 7B, I wanted to change to 7C like Tonci. I transferred to the 7th Flotilla to St.Nazaire, but I could not choose 7C. I am in 1941 august, so it should not be a problem. I have more than enough renown. I tried to transfer to 1st Flotilla Brest, than I could change only Type 2. Anybody have idea what is the problem? At 2nd Flotilla I could change to type 9B and 9C. Only the 7C unavaible to me, but everywhere. ???
probably type 7c is not introduced yet in your game's time
norway had some bases whith the VII
Tiny bit disappointed you didn't go for the Type IX, but oh well.
The bit of SH5 that I miss the most is the Enigma machine. It didn't get old for me at all. I loved it.
44:40 Not just in Russian history books. In Western history books as well, since most of academia is openly communist.
Oh yeah, the enigma was really well done!
not 9 meters - it's 9 m/s wind
40 seconds to 30 meters....cannot be right compared to real life.
So no. This is New German History lie that the War started with the USSR and N Germany while the Hole Europe was Given to the F.rer on the plate by the West,.
first
SHV sucks, period.
i wish silent hunter 4 had IJN campaign...those IJN subs are gigantic...i dont count the mod campaign as one worth of being a japanese campaign
Type 7-c variant will suffice comrade Hauptman. Perhaps your other duties as regional party leader are interfering with your duties to the KRIEGSMARINE!!!
HEIR HAUPTMAN I DO NOT WISH TO SEND MY FRIENDS FROM THE BAND SABATON TO TALK TO YOU...
Check out the song Bismarck from SABATON. Awesome piece of music 🎵🎶 mine Hauptman.
