The adults in my family have been doing this for years and it works really well since they’re supporting a good cause and don’t end up with gifts they won’t use.

I have added a sewing fabric marker to my bulk bags for the grocery store. So I can write the bulk number on the bag and it will wash out when I do laundry.

I make a wishlist, even of something as simple as a specific towel. They are all with different price points (5€ to 100€) so everyone can pick something within their budget. And I am always very happy I don't have to go through the process of purchasing myself.
I find spending money (apart from grocecries) rather stressful.

For years and years, I’ve been afraid a snake will be in my toilet when I get up to pee at night. I was using my cell phone to peek in the toilet every time I got up to pee. My husband noticed and bought a toilet LED motion sensor light so the bowl lights up when I walk in. Best present ever!!! And just so thoughtful.

I've started asking relatives for homemade treats. My family is huge into baking/making sweets, so I ask for them to make me a batch of whatever and include the recipie with it. I also request a reusable container, but that's hit or miss

I love taking my reusable bags to the grocery store. I used to be embarrassed about taking them in, but then I realized I can fit $60 worth in 2 /3 bags, $100 worth in 4/5, and even $200 in maybe 6-8 bags!
I used to apologize to the cashier about it, but it turns out lots of cashiers here in N Texas all take their own. I also enjoy being able to pack my own bags and sort them into bags I want, and I use old plastic bags i keep at the bottom in case I need them for some reason.

    • @lesliehyde
      @lesliehyde 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I personally just reuse my plastic bags instead of spending money I don't have on the "reusable bag trend". The reusable bags I do use are made from leggings and/or shirts (think scrap quilt if you will) that have gained too many holes to be proper clothing to wear outside of my bedroom.

    • @Beeplabeep
      @Beeplabeep 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@lesliehyde oh nice! I use all of my old clothing for rags and projects. Most of my bags are collected for free over time like "goody bags" or event bags, from my place of work, and from friends or neighbors haha. Oh but my favorite is from this Mexican restaurant takeout order! I think I did buy 1 thing of small linen bags with a drawstring that I use for produce and some other th things that will be used for a long time. But once they're too worn I will look for an upcycled version from supplies I have on hand.

I haven’t tried this with family but my ex and I used to focus on experiences, classes, or hobbies instead of random items. I think this can help to focus on the non-material gifts or productive items. My mom is a hoarder and there was a year when we didn’t want to contribute to her things and we all contributed to a dishwasher for her. Anything that would upgrade a home is another idea.

I think my best recommendation for friends and family that refuse to not buy you stuff is to ask them to give you money for experiences. For example, one year I was planning a trip to a festival with my boyfriend and I asked my aunt to buy my ticket. Worked like a charm, I got no other gifts and she was super stoked to help me with that. 🙌🏼

I got my parents to start recycling. Not by talking to them. Everytime I came over to help them (most of the time cook) I would gather the recycling and do it myself.
My siblings started to help me with this. Then out of the blue I see 4 diffrent recycling bins in the house. Sometimes small actions speak louder then words.

How I try to ask for gifts from a consumerist family: I've started including a "things we don't need" list alongside my wish list! That way my husband and I don't keep getting the things that clutter our house or go to waste: throw blankets, household items like tools and flashlights, superfluous kitchen utensils, items that aren't our style, and the like. My parents etc. love to make fun of my ~sustainability~ in a lighthearted way, which just means they know it's important to me now - and they accept that my gifts come wrapped in reused packing paper from online orders :)

On recycling gift bags - my grandma and mom saved them year to year and I learned once the gift was out of the bag, the bag went in to bag pile folded bag up for next time. My kids learned the same. We re-use the sting and cute labels from year to year. Once a bag gets ripped or unusable we try and use it for wrapping smaller gifts. I have some string and baubles from my grandmother, that are still used today…..😘

For the how to convince your family that you don’t want anything, if they absolutely have to buy you something ask them to take you someone where as an experience or donate to a cause you’re passionate about in your name, I know you’ve talked about these on a Chanel before and I think it would be a really good idea to tell your family as gift ideas so they don’t buy you a physical product!

How to get people to stop buying you gifts… HAVE KIDS. 😂 you are forgotten about!
But then you have to be so specific on what to get your kids so you don’t end up with a bunch of toys that are just going to break. I just tell people if they want to get my kids something I didn’t agree to it can stay at their house. I know what my kids want and need, why make it hard trying to find something!

Then I tried listing some general item themes but not specifics, so I again ended up with some stuff that I wasn't going to use. Finally, this year I decided to send **links** so that I know they know to get the exact item I'm going to use. I also put some links to stuff like my shampoo bars which I need anyway!

Years ago now, I was working on reducing plastic bags over my produce and meat. With perishables like meat, if the container leaks out then then germs can seep in; i started using more plastic meat bags because the meat packaging got worse and worse despite my efforts to reduce plastic. One of my favorite cashiers however, cautioned me against reducing my plastic bags for produce. They are given watered down window cleaner for cleaning thier belts and often aren't given the time to wipe after each bit of dripping meat juice, the powdery residue on the outside of garden chemicals, or even the flour which comes outmof/ off of the bags then gathers what ever else comes down the belt. As a result, I use the plastic bags for my produce then try to give them a second use.

One of the things I asked for and got this year was the electric lighter you mentioned in one of your videos. I love it and am excited to not have to buy disposable lighters anymore. I also bought a misto and it's a great thing to have. I don't feel bad buying a bottle that I won't reuse from that anymore.

One of my favorite gifts has to be the red and green table cloth my mom gave me that used to be my grandmother's. Her name was Betty and she used it only one time a year for Christmas. I worked at Central Market in Austin during college and I was so impressed by how little packaging they use in the produce and bulk sections, way before I adopted a zero waste/sustainable mindset. I also appreciate the option to put bulk items in paper if you didn't have your own bag, so you don't have to opt for plastic (at least at the N Lamar one). I've thought about reaching back out to them and discussing overall store sustainability initiatives!

Money is the best convincing argument for people. I don't even say I'm trying to be sustainable anymore because people don't care. Like for wrapping presents, the other day I told a person who was talking about how pricey and time consuming wrapping presents was, and I was like "I just find cute scarves, table cloths, and napkins at the thrift store and wrap all my presents in them and either give that as part of the gift or reuse it next year if they don't want it." And she thought it was the most revolutionary idea ever and was telling other people about it. It's the easiest thing haha.

1 your jeans look SO GOOD on you!
2 if i didn't want my family to buy me stuff, i would ask for food or baking goods or snacks, something like that. or an experience
3 i save all of the paper that comes in packages when i order online and i wrap my gifts in that. also painters tape is really good instead of regular plastic tape, cause it holds it together but doesn't stick completely and wont ruin the paper = you can use it again!
4 my best present was a cast iron pan i got from my grandma when i moved to my first apartment seven years ago. it hasn't damaged a bit and i use it almost every day when cooking!!

As a Texan who relocated to Chicago--your HEB footage almost made me cry. I shop at Aldi here in Chicago and don't get me wrong, Aldi is actually pretty great. But it's not HEB.
Also we all do lists in my family, we use Google Docs and link to everything we want. My grandma is the only one who goes off list and we've just accepted that she won't get on board.

I love the way you responded to the question about the ice rink's energy practices!!! 🥰 !! I just stumbled upon your channel today, and I love your vids.. your personality, the casual authentic way you speak to your audience, the way you don't pretend to be perfect or expect your audience to be perfect... 👍🤗💜 You got yourself a new subscriber. Thanks for your great vids!

So one of my suggestions for gifts for people who don’t want gifts is to make a list of organizations you would like to have a donation in your name. And for those who simply have to get you a physical thing, places like myfahlo are good. You get a bracelet for your donation to track an endangered animal. Also, just make it super easy for them and provide weblinks to everything.

A way to get them to stop buying you stuff when they do like what you mom did is to just say, "Okay, Be sure to keep the receipt so I can return it."

Also I wrapped my Xmas gifts in newspaper this year! Newspapers in my neighborhood almost never get picked up and just lay outside so that was my eco-friendly wrapping this year!

I absolutely loved this video so please do more! This year I'm giving my family their gifts in reusable totes from baggu that they can keep in hopes they use it instead of plastic bags or regift them. I also tried my best to get gifts sustainably, vegan, fairtrade, and/or from a small business.

By the way - I love watching you! You give me so many ideas that I can incorporate into my life that I hadn’t been able to find a swaps for- like the tape issue- I don’t know why I didn’t think of Kraft tape! Thank you a million times over 💜 and your right- doing the best we can is better than not doing anything at all- we should all do at least a few things to help our planet out- but being perfect is just not possible and we should also enjoy life 💜🙏

In 2020 I started using reusable gift wrap, I actually got a bunch of knot wraps from Lush, and I also got different sized canvas bags and had my kids initals or names placed onto them so them it took away the need for gift tags for the gifts packaged into those. Then we also made reusuable gift tags for anyone that we purchase for each year. I have not really ventured into using reusbale gift wrap for anyone not close family/friends, but I think that I will steal your idea about going to the thrift store and purchasing some hand towels so like you said, if they like it they can keep it, or I will take it back! Also clean up of Christmas morning is a breeze now!

I have never seen a grocery store like the one that you showed. I live in Kansas, and being being so close to the farms it makes way more sense not to have everything in massive amounts of packaging, but it is anyway.

Best gifts (not Christmas, but for my birthday) I've received were both experiences. When I was a teenager, my mom and aunt got me tickets to go see Whitney Houston in concert (The Bodyguard time period) which I was SO excited about and loved. And my husband when we were dating gifted me a playdate with a family friend's pet dachshund. I love dachshunds and it totally made my day even though the dog was not into hanging out with me cuz it was wondering where his mom was, haha.

I always tell people that i hate cards, i think it can be guilty clutter and a waste of trees. This year my mother in law bought me luffa seeds inside of a card for my birthday.... I cried i was so happy. I'm finding the more i voice my opinions, the more they listen and they here me 😁 thanks for helping me find new ideas to live as waste free and eco friendly as i can!
