My Grocery Shopping Routine as a Sustainable Minimalist Trying & Failing to be Zero Waste

  • Today I want to share my grocery shopping routine with you. Even as a Person trying to live as sustainably as possible, this is the area where I feel like I fail the most. We try to be as zero waste as possible, eat a lot of vegan meals and give our best to shop local and organic. But especially in the past year, I didn't manage to go to the bulk store a lot which results in more plastic packaging.

    I appreciate how honest this is! There's too much gatekeeping in the sustainability community, and it's so discouraging. I don't think people realize how entitled they are when they can afford this sustainable and organic stuff that's double the price and half the quantity and quality sometimes. It's refreshing to see someone making a more realistic effort and remember it's not zero waste or you're banished to the netherworlds and guilt-tripped for enjoying a bag of chips!

      @ecofriendlia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Yes! I think we need more of that! And to be really honest, I am losing some subscribers now and I knew that would happen but it's such a bad feeling. But I want this to be a community where we can learn and I absolutely don't want to give off the picture of being perfect when I am not. It's so much more valuable if more people dare to try even if they know they won't be able to be 100% zero waste or something like that, than if just a handful of privileged people are allowed to be sustainable because they can be 100%...

      Guilty!
      I am back. Only because, I am really interested in what you have to say. The only reason I deleted everything off TH-cam in the first place was because I don’t trust a lot of social media sights.
      But I will say, I have enjoyed learning about becoming more of a minimalist and how to be more sustainable in my own life. I also mentioned to you sometime ago about my own plans to build a tiny house here in Australia. So fear not. Those who get it. Will return. I did.🍃☮️🍃Out...

      @@ecofriendlia don’t worry, you’ll gain subscribers too that resonate with showing imperfect effort in the right direction. I have some ocd tendencies and I sometimes get stuck in a mindset where i need to follow very strict new rules eg about sustainability or health. It’s exhausting and not realistic. I am happy to see someone concerned with sustainable minimalism who has not everything figured out. So many people can’t afford to shop only at organic bulk stores.

      @@ecofriendlia you are doing it just the right way, not trying to fit in with all those so-called perfect narcicissts! I love your channel and your open, honest and unpretentious style, it encourages people to not only doing their personal best, but to stay true to theirselves and others. Being authentic is such an essential part of joy and it would be just wonderful, if people could see and admit their mistakes without being or feeling ashamed for it. I truely believe that is the right mindset to start making this world a better place. So the brave ones like you are an awesome example for others to stay true and to be able to forgive themselves! Thank you so much for being on the front for authenticity and awareness, I do my best in the same way, even if some people dislike me for it 🙈❤👍🏻 they can just go, because I don't want my life to be a perfect-role-playing game, I want it to be just my real, unperfect and still often joyful life with all my real, unperfect friends in it, which are far better companions to me than all the superficial Barbies and Kens 🙂👌🏻

    I've started meal planning and budgeting in January and it has revolutionised my finances. I used to spend 320€ on groceries and now my average is 180€ with a record low of 110€ (per month). Every Sunday I fill in my meal calendar: what am I going to eat through out the week. I also take note of what I already have (fridge, pantry, freezer, fruit/veg). In such a way I never miss out on what's going bad because I always know what needs to be eaten first. So meal planning also has helped me to reduce waste. Sometimes I use the app too good to go which helps me further stay on the budget.

    Living in Berlin, the most vegan friendly and maybe most sustainability friendly city in Germany, we have uncountable possibilities to buy plastic-free foods, we have „Unverpackt“ (unpacked) stores where you fill up your flour and other dry foods in glass cans and cotton bags you bring with you, and I also try to buy my cheese (and sometimes meat) in organic quality, if possible with my own packages. But Berlin became like this because of the public demand, I remember times where there were no organic foods in supermarkets at all, so let‘s hope that one day this way of buying groceries will arrive in whole Germany.
    I also try my best and fail daily, although there is almost everything around the corner - as long as you don‘t have your own garden and live on the countryside or have a loooooot of time to make stuff yourself, it is plain impossible to really live plastic free and completely sustainable on the food side and not spend a loooot of money..
    Thank you for your insight! Ich mag deine Videos sehr. ☺️

    This is how I shop too, working through my sustainability criteria and assessing the options in front of me. It is great when you find an option that ticks all the boxes. If you feel motivated, I think it is useful to let a producer know that you love their product, but ask that they consider changing to eco-friendly packaging. Or to let your local supermarket know what types of products you are looking for.
    So happy seeing people doing whatever they can to make more eco-friendly choices!

    Thank you for your honesty, I find it difficult to try to make the most sustainable choice sometimes. This morning for example I bought rocket that was packaged in plastic, it was at the sell by date and if it is not sold it gets dumped, so I saved it from the dump. I find it irritating that so many organic products are packaged in plastic 🤦🙄🙄🙄🙄. I try to buy local and organic, but it's not easy and sometimes not possible. Dairy products are always in plastic. I try to buy from the bulk store, but they don't sell everything I need, I try to only go in once a month as it's not the closest grocery store to me. On Saturday mornings we try to go to an organic vegetable market at the city park and then walk or cycle around. Do what you can and keep inspirating others to do the same.😁👏

    Thank you! My best way of saving some money is this: all of our nearby grocery stores have weekly ads and every Monday me and my husband scan through them and plan our dinners for the week ahead. It has actually become a fun routine and it keeps my mind creative when thinking about what to eat.
    I understand that people don't always want to shop at more than one store at the time, but my tip is to vary your grocery store of choice from time to time: in this way you will learn where your staple groceries are cheaper etc. For example I always buy peanut butter at a certain store, because I know it's like 50 cents cheaper, but it makes a difference in the long run!

    I think it's OK to have a snack or not such a healthy food when your nutrition is generally healthy. It can bring a little more joy and fun to eating. I have had to make a lot of compromises in my grocery shopping since moving to my parents where things I'm used to getting at home are not available here and the main store is quite a long drive away. It is hard to calculate what exactly to buy when I'm not positive on the day we will be going back to town the next week. The trick for me is to get enough without over or under buying. I'm grateful for the very small store near me that I can go to in a pinch. I have wanted to make Sourdough bread but have been too intimidated to try. Could you do a video on how you make yours? Great video today and it was lots of fun to go to the grocery with you! Have a beautiful day. ❤

    Yes, I definitely have the same grocery struggles. Our community supported agricultural started this week and I was so grateful! Unfortunately, because of COVID precautions, everything comes in plastic bags and we aren’t allowed to re-use them and the farm isn’t allowing us to bring our own bags to package the veg. So, it feels like taking a step backwards, just like how you can’t bring your own cups to coffee shops anymore. But I understand the health reasons and risks. It is more difficult to be as sustainable as we once could be, pre-pandemic. (I’m in the u.s.-Virginia)

    Grocery shopping is so hard. A big culture shock for us moving to Germany was how hard it is to find unpackaged produce in the grocery store. And just in general, so much comes packaged in plastic. And then add a miniscule food budget (200€/month for 3 people) and you have to make a lot of compromises. It's really hard when you are trying to live more sustainability.
    One thing that has been great for us is getting most of our produce either through Foodsharing or from the Tafel. That way it's usually unpackaged and is preventing food waste and is free/super cheap so it's a win all around.

I don't have any way to compost, but I pay for recycling every six months, as I don't have many cans and plastics that have contained any kind foodstuffs. Everything you eat doesn't have to be organic, look up the fruits and veggies that use the least pesticides.

    I really enjoyed this! Food shopping is such a struggle when it comes to packaging. There are more package free stores opening around where I live but none of them are close enough to shop regularly.

    • @ecofriendlia
      @ecofriendlia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! I also have a package-free store but it takes over 30 minutes by bike or public transport... So I go when I can but I can't afford to buy everything there, it's too far away and they have a limited selection of products. But I really hope there will be more stores like that in the future! ☺

    The bulk shop is so far away from my home and I also don't earn that much - my compromise is going to a shop close by where they sell expired food to stop food waste.

    Yea I cannot find tofu without packaging in my area. I also occasionally will buy beyond burgers and vegan yogurt all have plastic packaging. Then of course there is the veggies that are plastic wrapped which I get to avoid but isn’t always optional.

    It is actually good for vegetables to look different than each other because the way farmers make vegetables look the same is through inbreeding which leads to less genetic diversity and more susceptibility to disease, hence the pesticides, etc

    Danke Lia, das war interessant! Bei dm gibt es Mais etc. im Glas. Und hast Du einen Unverpacktladen in der Nähe? Dort kannst Du z.B. Cashews und Räuchertofu kaufen. Bei veganen Produkten ärgert es mich immer, dass die meistens in Plastik verpackt sind. Schließlich gibt es Kuhmilch-Produkte ja auch im Pfandglas, das müsste doch bei veganer Sahne etc. auch möglich sein. 🤔 Ein Kochvideo fände ich schön. 😊

    • @ecofriendlia
      @ecofriendlia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ja, das ist echt ärgerlich dass man sich fast immer für einen kompromiss entscheiden muss. Es gibt einen Unverpacktladen, aber etwa 10km von hier und im letzen Jahr wollte ich nicht so oft öffentlich fahren wenns nicht nötig war und mit dem Rad gings auch nicht immer... Hoffentlich in Zukunft wieder öfter!

    I love the Violife cheese! Here in the US it's labeled as "feta," not "greek white," and you can get it almost everywhere now (even at my small rural grocery store) which is exciting.

    • @ecofriendlia
      @ecofriendlia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think the EU has some laws that make it impossible to name any vegan cheese "cheese" or "feta" or anything like that. Because it could confuse costumers... It's stupid...

    • @avbeasley
      @avbeasley 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ecofriendlia oh I get it. We have some stuff like that here too...vegan ice cream can't be called ice cream, it has to be "frozen dessert." Dairy farmers were also recently lobbying for non-dairy milk not to be allowed to be called milk...such a waste of time and money. 🤦

    I am Vegan and eating 90% whole plants (10% goes to vegan pizza or ice cream or donuts every several months or so) and like to browse around the reduced veggie/fruit section at my Tesco here in Edinburgh first. By getting the food there I save lots of monies and I save the food of being thrown away in the evening. I don't buy vegan cheese often and make my oat milk at home. Life hack: I bought a 20g bag of organic oats and that lasts me usually over a year :D I am also part of a foodsharing app called "Olio" here which is great and sometimes I go dumpster diving. When I still lived in Germany 5 years ago, I was part of the foodsharing system as well and collected food from organic supermarkets which then goes into the Fairteiler, a distribution box/compartment in a shed/basement. There is a map for these Fairteiler in Germany online and people who are aware of them can collect food. I love to visit zero waste shops and refill all my spices, teas and rice, legumes or pasta and even tamari sauce, oils, vinegars, etc there. For me alone I spend around £120 each month for food, plus maybe another £20 for going out into a vegan cafe or pizzeria. If I can remember well I did spent around 150 Euro back in Germany for my groceries, so roundabout the same I guess.

    Wir verbrauchen auch Unmengen an Haferflocken :D falls du einen Aldi Süd (oder auch bei Netto oder penny, die zwei verwechsle ich immer) in der Nähe hast: da gibt es seit kurzem zarte bio Haferflocken in Papier. Kosten zwar das doppelte, aber nicht das Vierfache, wie im Bioladen. Und wenn man überlegt, dass es in der Woche bei 3 Packungen Haferflocken nur 1,50 euro mehr sind, geht es doch wieder
