- Ive been a woodworker for about 10 years now and have made several entry doors. These are quite a bit more complicated than making just a slab door to fit an existing jamb. An entry door requires many layers of complexity because there are so many parts and very little tolerance for mistakes. You have a Jamb, jamb stock with weather stripping, threshold, door sweep, panels, trim, hardware, hinges, and of course the door itself. hope this video helps you see what you are getting into and can better prepare you for your project! Let me start by saying this was an amazing video, and I am really looking forward to seeing part 2 (even a part 3...door installation?). I started watching your videos a few years ago, but I honestly found them hard to follow. There was so much start/stop going on that they seemed better suited for someone who had the attention spam of a gnat. So I hadn't watched a video for about a year. I have had building a door on my to do list and I just happened to come across this today. Like all areas in life, I could see a growth and maturity in your approach that was awesome to see. I actually learned something. I also use Sketchup when building something. But I loved your idea of taking a screenshot of the dimensions and using that. Genius. Sometimes its the little things in life. You have a new loyal subscriber

It’s Sunday night. I’m alone in my shop with my woodpeckers adj shelf pin jig bc my client wants adj can shelves in their pantry. 5” wide. Ugh. Your definition of "easy" is very suspect, but as always, excellent video.
Haha I suppose I mean easy in the way that the simplified methods of transferring from cad to drawing makes it easy to get your cuts right the first time and not make mistakes. The work isn’t fast by any means but if you use the techniques I mention I believe the skill level can be pretty entry level to execute. Thanks for watching! 😅
Nice looking door. Instead of using blue painters tape on the door (so the cauls do not stick), would it be easier to cover the cauls with packing tape? I've seen Tom Johnson do this and it appears to work well, saving time and tape. Thanks for the vid. Cheers, David.
Thanks David! I only put tape in one spot on the caul just over the single glue seam. Packing tape would work well too but I don’t save cauls. I just grab whatever is laying around and do whatever is quickest for the situation.

Also, I meant to ask on your last video about the $1,000 hand plane. Do you use the charlesworth ruler trick to sharpen plane backs? It may save you many hours apparently? Lol

Thanks for watching! I typically flatten and polish the backs of plane irons like a cave man apparently. I use wet stones and move up through the grits by hand
@@WilliamDouglasCo that’s also how I do them too, but with diamond stones. Rob cosman has a much better explanation of this “trick” than I do, but i thought it may save you some time 🤷♂️
Great video! I really want to replace my front door as well, but I have been hesitant due to our AZ weather and fears about wood movement. Any advice for someone like myself making their 1st door? Do I need to start with incredibly straight lumber or target a particular moisture content in the stock? I guess I am just a bit intimidated to start it because wood movement is the last thing you want in a door unlike most furniture. Would appreciate any tips that you have and thanks for the inspiration to start this project.
Those are great fears to have because they will keep you honest when building it. No shortcuts.
Moisture content below 8% is pretty common and easy to get. Throughout the build make sure to sticker stack everything and let it breathe. Quarter sawn material is always a positive for maintaining straight stiles and rails. Use a good exterior grade lumber or a good exterior finish to seal the door. I’ve been using Penofin recently. It’s significantly cheaper then the outdoor hard wax oil I used to use and it seems to work really well. I’ve only got about a year of experience with it but so far so good.

I ve been getting ready to build 2 doors for my shop for a yr or so now.
I Have a bunch of beech I chainsaw milled 8 yrs ago.
I plan for 2 rails 2 styles, live edge to the middle, rabbet the inside, inlay insulated glass in for the panel, and putting square stops on the inside.
The doors are gonna be 4/0x8/0.
What’s been holding me up is figuring out all the weather stripping and threshold.
Can you link or call out what your using in your jamb and threshold in the next video?

What type of program do you use for your design layout on your projects?

Just built a door. I can assure you that adding the door sweep to the assembled door is much harder…
Yeah that’s how I’ve always done it in the past. This is the first time I’ve done it before assembly. Although I will still need to cut through the stiles after glue up. If I do it after glue up then I use a slot cutter. Pretty sketchy but probably the Safeway option
Did you design your own logo with a website or did you have someone professional do it
We designed it ourselves. Paid to have it vectorized or whatever it’s called

Ah I just mean It’s not veneered like most exterior doors. Most door companies refuse to make solid wood door because of movement
