    I heard a good tip once that if you want to making base coating something in yellow easier, just paint it black instead. Black will never go out of style. Who needs yellow.

    • @Annabanana_tv
      @Annabanana_tv 3 ปีที่แล้ว +80

      On top of that... yellows in Miniature Paint have always had some coverage issues for me at least 😕

    • @StudsonStudio
      @StudsonStudio 3 ปีที่แล้ว +155

      @@Annabanana_tv Yeah, yellow is always a challenge. I heard a real tip that orange makes a good basecoat for yellow, but then, painting a consistent orange coat is a new challenge in itself. 🙃

    The raindrops off Totoro's whisker is my personal favorite. I think more rain would have been overdone. You really only need enoug for the suggestion of rain (wisdom from art school...I was the master of "too much" for a while).

    • @NorthoftheBorder
      @NorthoftheBorder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +116

      I agree wholeheartedly--though that may just be because I didn't want to add any more. It also would have been awkard to find more space and not have it all built up in one area

    • @aerial_silks_hoop
      @aerial_silks_hoop 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I think a couple rain splashes on the umbrellas would be great and some water droplets on the leaves. Although if I am the one who had to do it, I'd just agree it's perfect as is

    • @calinguga
      @calinguga 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      to achieve heavier rain i think the raindrops would have to start filling up the empty space in between the characters, which is rather infeasible with this method i reckon.
      so having to keep the raindrops near surfaces, i think they're the right amount. it looks more like a drizzle than a downpour but it definitely is convincing rain.

    I gotta say: I started binge watching your videos the other day after stumbling upon one of them and falling in love with your humor, editing, and of course the lovely art. I have laughed heartily at each one but every bit of this video had me laughing harder than any other. From the constant mess ups on Totoro, the perfectly timed memes and clips, and then the sudden close up of the horrifying expression on that little girl's face about halfway through and I am over here howling. You've inspired me to pull out my clay again and hopefully one day be even 1/16 as skilled as you are.

  • @Entropy72
    @Entropy72 3 ปีที่แล้ว +57

    Pedantic note: The rain drops would not come from the tips of the umbrella ribs, it would come from the lowest point of the droop in the material between them.

    • @dothedo3667
      @dothedo3667 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Depends on the umbrella I guess. He made them a bit droopier than they really are, so yeah, if they're droopy enough then you're right. For most umbrellas though, the fabric is taut when open and the ribs are longer/lower than the often-inward curve of the fabric edges so the rain drips from the ribs (also since it's taut rain also drips from between those areas too). His umbrellas are more randomly wavy than explicitly droopy, so the rain will drip from many different spots and it's hard to see exactly where because it's hard to see the exact shape. He did put rain dripping from both the cloth and the ribs though, which in general is pretty accurate.

    I just found your most excellent channel and this was fantabulous. I have two recommendations for you 1. Using crappy paints first use a gesso layer, it’s a great primer and is cheap to source in the uk, try cowling and willcox on line, sign up for a news letter and keep your eye out for one of their many offers. There are also make your own recipes for it. 2. For applying gloopy pastes such as mud treat yourself to a trip to the pound shop or supermarket and buy icing spatulas and spread your gloop with ease of mind that you are not ruining your brush or likely to encounter make up brushes owners Roth in the future. I found a set from Morrison’s for under £5 which are awesome and a lot cheaper than artist paler knives. They are also really good for mixing paints such as heavy bodied acrylics. I hope these may help.
    Thank you for sharing your amazing creations you made my night
    Best wishes Lindz

    A good paint to use, especially for white, is a thick body acrylic.
    They're my favorite, since they're super heavy duty. You need the strongest color, able to pile up like mountains? Just use heavy body!
    It is super thick though, and feels a bit more like oil paint. It's not too expensive either, maybe only 50% more than a standard tube of acrylic, or a little less if you buy the huge tubes.

    Late to the party, and your channel. Bingewatching your videos. This diorama is my favorite so far. The rain and the sculpting you did are fantastic. Thank you for sharing!
