Hi Jack, the machine is also known as a reducing machine. It was invented by Victor Janvier back in the early 1800s, he was a Frenchman. In the US the mints used a similar but later machine called the Hill Pantograph. It differed from the Janvier in that it scanned the electro type horizontally rather than radially.
