“Mclaren fell away”.. barely even mentions Oscar Piastri..
Peter just disregarding the fact that Piastri finished 1 second behind the leader despite losing 5+ seconds in the last pit stop and having to overtake leclerc (with a superb move btw). And setting fastest lap on 17 lap old hards..
These last few weeks I’ve really fallen off Peters analysis. Some very odd takes that are objectively just plain wrong

As an antipodean very proud of Piastri, I cant help noticing a typical Pom looking down on or ignoring another stellar performance from "The Colonies" . I mean really, Mclaren fell away ? You're missing one of the most interesting threads of the season with your miopic view that Lando is the only (Brit) driver in the McLaren team. Piastri is in his second year, regularly up on the podium now. In such a short amount of time has learnt how to manage tyres and developed at such an amazing rate. But you barely even rate him a mention. Max, Max, Max. Whatever. Mark my words. Piastri will be on the top step regularly before you know it. His trajectory is inevitable and you don't even notice.

    • @bcm70

I consider that , contrary to what Peter tells, the weight advantage for George due to the low weight is considerable.
I found an article (in Dutch) about the RB 18, start of 2022 season.
There was told that the overweight of that car would cost them 0,3 seconds / lap.
The car was , moment of writing this, 10 -15 kg overweight.
Also we know that to the end of the race when cars have less fuel on board (up to 100kg) they drive seconds faster each lap (with the same tyres...in other words directly after a pitstop).
1,5KG during the complete race would make George on average 0,05 to 0,1 second faster each lap.
That is a considerable amount...And we know that also tyres are degrading faster with more weight...
    double advantage for George.
(O,1 second faster at 44 laps is about 4,5 seconds....at least....with the very close finish from Lewis and Pisatri this tells me that even this tiny underweight could have been the key to the success in drivimg for George)

I don’t know what’s changed lately Peter, but you seem to be extremely down on Oscar Piastri and riding Lando‘s coattails, despite the fact that Lando bottled his start again when in a position to do something good in the race. The McLaren challenge wasn’t diluted, because Oscar was the only one who had the skills and ability to challenge the Mercedes drivers. His much vaunted teammate Lando Norris was buried in the back of the pack because he stuffed the start, and then didn’t drive well enough. Might be time for you to open your eyes mate. Oscar is out performing Lando and I know people don’t like to hear that, but that’s what’s happening right now.

Peter has the typical ingrained British bias, but he also seems to have blinders on when it comes to Piastri. Too many people are sleeping on Oscar after touting Lando as the only person who can challenge Max. Meanwhile, Piastri is improving every single race, getting quicker and quicker with a much more sensible head on his shoulders than emotional Lando.

In my view, it is quite irresponsible of the team and the stunt they tried to pull by fooling the FIA with the fuel not drawn, they should hold their collective heads in shame.
Lewis is on his way out, engineering wins for George should not be their priority right now, they should be constantly working on optimizing the car for both drivers and trying to finish higher up on the constructors standings. This reeks of desperation on the part of Mercedes and I am not impressed one bit. If they had pulled George in, they would have had more points overall as a team, that should have been the priority.

Everyone keeps on saying George took a gamble that worked, how did ot work when he got disqualified? If failed spectacularly. New F1 tyres weigh 43kg. If a driver does a long stint like what George did, the tyres lose 3kg. That 3kg or 1.5kg of it is what George needed in order to be within weight if he had pitted as he was supposed to. He chose not to pit thus giving up making the deficit of 3kg which needed to in weight. He really needed that pit stop. These cars are so precise in terms of engineering to the extent that every gram is important. Not pittting cost him the points in this race. He was never going to win it, he gambled, he lost. Everyone saying he should have won, i don't how you are arriving at that opinion. Where was he magically going to get the 3kg he needed which would have come from a new set of tyres?

Back to your claim - 4 seconds over the race it's about less than 0.1 seconds a lap which works very differently when cars are in clean air compared to when they are stacked together. So we can't really just subtract 4 seconds of his time and call it a day. One would basically need to rerun a simulation lap by lap to see how it might've gone. You did that right?

At the end of the race, Toto didn't look happy. The reason was probably twofold. First, Russell staying out for a one stop strategy was probably a hail-mary for second place, not the win. Hamilton effectively lead the entire race after passing LeClerc and deserved the victory. Now, instead, Russell was bringing home the 1-2. Meanwhile, Toto was certainly aware that Russell had seriously held up Hamilton with a slow-on-the-curbs, blast-down-the-straights tactic to hold off Hamilton in the same car. (Russell stated this in interviews after the race). As a result Piastri wiped out an almost 5 second deficit in almost as many laps. Put another way, just one more lap and Piastri would likely have breezed past both Hamilton AND Russell, whereas if Russell had let Hamilton pass the outcome would've been no-contest.
Of course Toto didn't know the car was underweight, so that wasn't the reason he appeared so 'flat' after the win. Forever the analyst, Toto already knew how close they'd come to blowing the entire race, that Russell had essentially risked team victory for personal glory, and that Toto has allowed it. Still, no criticism of either Russell or Hamilton - this time the failures were purely on the track-side team. Both Russell and Hamilton executed a perfect race albeit on different strategies.

There are also other drivers who got disqualified for many other reasons, including Lewis Hamilton himself in the 2023 US GP because of the problem with the skid block under the car.
Rules are rules. They are there to make racing regulated. They aren't there so people can say, "...but that slight margin doesn't affect the outcome!", which is the most cliché response anyway. If there's a legit dispute, then the team must take it directly to the FIA. Nothing can be taken from GR today. It was a master class performance hands down. No cool down lap. I may be wrong, but had there been a cool down lap he would've picked up plenty of marbles and been at legal weight. Did they weigh any of the other 1 stoppers? He left his rubber on the track. A beautiful drive. LH was on it this weekend and an amazing qualifying lap and drove such a clean race. I'M TORN!!! :)

Lewis could've done the 1 stop but they were fixated on covering Charles undercut (and Lando according to Toto...Really Toto? Really?) and that their simulation said George was finishing P5 whether he 1 stopped or 2 stopped (Really Toto? Really?). There was also a lack of urgency to Lewis when he put on the second set of Hards and emphasis on staying ahead of the car behind rather than hunting George.

This may have had greater prominence since the rain would've made the track more "green" than usual following qualifying. Combine this with fuel loads depleting, it might explain the impression of the hards having increased performance (made possible due to their superior durability).
