2024 F1 AUSTRIAN GP race analysis by Peter Windsor

  • With THAT collision destined to be talked-about for many a day, Peter begins this video with his take on the lap 64 Max Verstappen-Lando Norris shunt that eliminated them both from contention - and explains why it was that the Red Bull driver, at that point, was only running scrubbed medium Pirellis (as distinct from the new mediums on Lando's McLaren). Peter also identifies two stewards' decisions that could have greatly affected the race outcome - and you may be suprised. After the Turn 3 fracas, it was Mercedes' George Russell who breezed through to win from McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Ferrari's Carlos Sainz. Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen finished fourth and fifth - both with penalties - and both Haas-Ferraris - upstaging teams like Aston Martin and Williams - finished assuredly in the points.

Independently of whom is to blame or not, Lando got the first taste of what really means to fight at the front in F1 when championship points start to count for real. No buddies, no fun and what not. Just ruthless competition. This is good, it will be a stepping stone in his journey if he wants to win championships.

@Middleageman500 well you nailed it I love reading truth and sensibility in the comments. Max has been the alpha, dominant force in their friendship as he’s 2 years older so it’s natural. Lando is climbing the mountain and slowly but surely climbing up the mental mountain and I’m hoping he’s had enough of 2nd now and realised that he can’t be mates and win. So after Sunday I think mates is over and nemesis has appeared to Lando who actually has the superior car now. Mental shortcomings are all that are in Lando’s way and I’m positive his psychologist is on call for emergency situations. A Mclaren driven by Lando would be the perfect result for the British fans at Silverstone and they’ll hear me from Melbourne. I hope it’s now. The longer Max is beating him in an inferior car the harder it will become to execute that vital step of winning and taking over as the dominant force on track. But Max is on the path for GOATness and is ahead of Lewis’ records for same percentage of races, time etc. It’s if Max sticks around long enough to win 8, and if Mclaren are winning by habit cause if Lando doesn’t win then Oscar definitely will. That’s another story for another day. What an era of formula 1. It’s the best since Senna vs Prost

I think Norris just put himself under huge pressure for finally getting a win. After missing out the last two times it was obvious that he was going to give everything and more. And his remark about "Max has won so many times already." is a bit surprising. If he knows Max well (which he does), he also knows that Max will fight just as hard for win 68 (or whatever it is), as he did for the very first one. That hunger makes him the champion he is. He is not going to give anyone a present because they deserve their first victory. Not even a close friend.

I don’t know why they say that the leading constructor gets the advantage of being the first garage. What is the advantage? All I see is disadvantage of having to wait for other cars to come in despite the fact that they were behind.

@@parthosarathimaxotek the disadvantage of the first lap SC whole grid pit stop is real, but rarely an issue.
      the advantages are
-the easier turn in angle (you dont have to turn in between mechanics of other teams)
-shorter trip to the pit when carrying damage (puncture)
but the true reason why the champion CHOOSES box 1 is because under normal competitive conditions you cant loose the lead there. your lead can be compromised but not lost which is more important.
      here is why:
when you face close racing, which is when pit stops are critical, and you and p2 come into the pits separated by 0.2s you want to have the first box. even if your pitstop is 0.2 seconds slower than p2's pit stop he cannot release because you are now on equal time but already next to him in the pitlane and have preference. so you keep p1 even though you should be next to each other.
if you come in as p2 with a 0.2 deficit and your stop is 0.2 seconds quicker than p1 you actually overtake him because again he cant release.

Then Norris was, understandably, super aggressive in his attacks almost taking out Verstappen at one point to complain that he was forced off the track. In what world does Lando live to even think that was the case? Then he complained after another divebomb pushing Verstappen off track that he should give back the position because he was ahead at the apex, well look at the video, he was half a car behind.. I love these aggressive moves and racing in general but stop the whining, both were racing hard and to be really fair, the “shunt” to me was more an unfortunate racing incident than a penalty worth move.

Lando just drove on the outside of Max like he wasn't there and put himslelf in harms way which is just dumb. Norris should realise that he is a role model for the world and that this kind of statement shows how immature he still is. With Stella and Brown, too, you can see by their stupid statements (bring Lewis back in with that 2021 case...) that frustration still prevails there. Probably because they haven't been able to build a winning car for years. But boy oh boy... what cheap rhetoric, unbelievable.

Yea, that definitely Lando's fault. Every common sense take on how that works says Lando was at fault. The driver on the inside shouldn't HAVE to alter their own line, particularly when they are AHEAD. That rule is stupid, well i understand the thought behind it but its implemented extremely poorly. If the driver in the lead ACTUALLY intentionally forces them off the track in a clear case of being an asshole, penalize them. But its not like Max made double moves to cut him off, Max simply performed his defensive moves perfectly. British Media, fans, and all the 10yr old Lando fanboys will never accept that. Lando has the better car yet he keeps getting curb stomped by the superior driver.
But it makes ZERO sense that Max is, for some insane reason, supposed to change HIS racing line despite being in the lead by his entire cars length... that's stupid. The stewards are shit but thats not news. The FIA needs to get it's shit together. It's as bad as the NFL and home plate umpires in baseball. They set rules that make no logical sense because they are entirely open to interpretation and some of them go against everything racing IS. Every human on the planet, with a fully functioning brain, KNOWS that in a turn the driver in the lead AND on the inside of the corner has the right of way to drive whichever line he wants to pick and its on the car behind to anticipate their choice and counter their movement to gain an advantage and potentially make the pass.
Lando wins one race and its like he thinks hes Michael Schumacher or something and should get Lewis Hamilton levels of preferential treatment...its insane. And worse, the rabid 10 year olds and most of British Media with their general massive bias on British athletes, AND apparently the FIA and stewards think so too. Its just stupid.

Thank you peter. Finally someone who just looked at the onboards and racing and comes to a fair conclusion. This is a prime example of a racing incident in which neither is really to blame. Wheelbanging like this happen every race but now sadly led to a puncture for both cars. I found it very strange the stewards gave Verstappen a penalty especially considering they did like half lap later when max just got out of the pits again. I doubt they thoroughly reviewed the footage and jumped to conclusions which might be unsettling for future decisionmaking by precedent now.
Lando already got his track limit penalty in the race, but somehow it took the stewards around 5-7 laps to determine that whilst it’s a pretty slam dunk penalty. I found this weird considering the speed at which they made the verstappen decision. It’s like they wanted to wait with the penalty knowing it would keep lando and max racing instead of max letting lando through. This worries me a lot, apparently spectacle is now more important than fairness or safety for that matter. If they had a massive dangerous crash with potential injury that would’ve been on the FIA for withholding that penalty. Their withholding also caused both Max and Lando a 1-2 finish (they both lost out on the podium now after regardless of who would’ve finished first) this should be reviewed. The stark difference in handling speed between these incidents whilst the faster decision was a lot harder to make than the slow decision is just quite unbelievable.

In the end both were equally at fault. And to be honest #LandoNorris showed his inexperience as he could have kept pressuring #MaxVerstappen into a mistake instead of being all dive bomb banzai, since being all dive bomb banzai on max gets you what lando got. This was fairly similar, both drivers not willing to give up and eventually collide. max on the outside? Penalty. Max on the inside? Penalty.

I am a bit disappointed with Mr. Windsor's take in today's race. I normally respect his balanced perspectives, except he did get a few facts incorrectly. 1) The Austrian race is 71 laps long, not 77 as he mentions. 2) Mr. Windsor also is naming the wrong RB pitstop being investigated. 3) More importantly, Max does indeed steer to the left in the braking zone (@ the 100m board). This was a rule implemented in the regulations several years back when Max would make dangerous moves under braking (article 33.4). Max moved several times in the braking zone and pushed Lando wide during the exit of the turn. It's too bad Peter's post race videos don't include race footage that backs up his statements.

I don't understand why we have all these penalties for unsafe releases and unsafe reentries and moving under braking and have to leave room for the other car but somehow we have no penalties for unsafe actions when passing? Lando would've taken Max out with the divebomb on lap 58 and even when he ran Max off the road had he not taken evasive actions. Why is there no penalty unless there's contact when so many other penalties exist to avoid contact. Also I totally agree that the delay in applying the Lando penalty played a huge part in that situation.

Peter you know you're great but, I do think you're wrong on this one. Lando tried two times on the inside and failed. So Lando was gonna try the outside and Max wasn't prepared for that. Max flinched to the outside when he saw what Lando was doing. The previous two laps Max kept flinching to block Lando in response to which side Lando was going to go to, in the braking zone none the less. That alone is a 10 second penalty and Max did it twice in the previous two laps. This time Lando was going to go on the outside, and with Max being in reaction mode, flinched left and realized it was too late. Lando was already there. Max's reaction to Lando already being there should have been to take the corner but intentionally didn't do so until it was too late and then they collided. Lando was in the right on this one. Max made a mistake. Thats not what gets me upset about this whole thing though. What gets me upset is that the stewards had two laps to warn Verstappen about movement in the braking zone and they chose not to take action. Third time in a challenge for the lead and there was a collision. When the FiA puts points onto your Super License, it means it was avoidable. Max really needs to change his crash or win mindset when he gets on that track. He's got a tremendous amount of skill and that skill does not allow you to put a competitors $80 Million dollar car at risk.

@@halofreak1990 Max moving while braking in reaction to Norris. Max squeezing Norris and the. Literally chopping the corner at off to force Norris to take the run off.
Not saying Norris didn’t do some slightly naughty things, but he didn’t do anything like what Max does.
Problem is that it’s Max has consistently been like this and a lot of people thought he’d changed a bit.

Was Max not moving in the braking zones? You say he was moving perfectly into the corner. Is this not the breaking Zone?

I disagree- when Verstappen is under pressure he reacts by blocking and running other drivers off the road as with Lewis in 2021- he’s a dirty driver with most people feeling that way!✅💯

Speak for yourself. I don't think he's dirty at all. He's definitely smarter than every other driver though. Norris is a moron
