    This is incredibly helpful and very inspiring for a new modular adventurer like myself. Really appreciate the crazy amount of time and effort that went into this. Your video inspired the bass in my latest (only my second attempt at a modular piece) patch/video, by just keeping it really simple. I'm not suggesting your patch for Holding a Feather is at all, it's very complex, but the way you broke it all down and explained each voice really opened my eyes and I actually understood how each part in isolation works. Thank you, and I look forward to more in the future!

    Love this video, very engaging way to walk through your patch/piece. For the next one, I'd love to be able to see a bit more of the synth, like a shot from above or something like that?

    • @Lightbath
      @Lightbath  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Yeah, see the similar comment below for my response to the top angle. It's a bit more complicated than it seems to shoot a 12U from above and have it look good. A 6U, though is a different story.

  • @weepwow

  • @kozmicstreamz
    @kozmicstreamz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really love your music and your philosophy. The modular you created and knowing how to use it to get these results blows my mind. Awesome! I've just been toying with getting into modular ... if I could something a fraction as nice with only a 6u 104hp machine that would be amazing. I keep looking at plonk and the rainmaker. In the past it was rings.

    • @Lightbath
      @Lightbath  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. All three of those modules are great. Rings is probably my favorite. Having 4 notes that can overlap makes for such a nice sound. And Rainmaker is great, but maybe not a place to start. Don’t underestimate Clouds (or a micro-Clouds) - especially with the Parasites alternate firmware - to get some nice reverb/delay/granular stuff.
      If you’re ever interested in a group conversation about this sort of stuff, I’ll be holding a monthly Google Hangout as part of my Patreon offerings: patreon.com/lightbath. And I think r beny is going to guest on the first one this January :)

    Wonder about your vision about the Rainmaker vs Dual looping Delay.I see you have DLD in some of your cases. But in your latest case you only use the Rainmaker. I'm about to buy a Rainmaker but don't know if i should also hold on to the DLD... any suggestions? Thanks in advance

    • @Lightbath
      @Lightbath  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve kept my DLD. I absolutely love how clean it is and it’s so great for rhythmic stuff. I look forward to using it more when there’s room in my case. I’m just currently experimenting with the Rainmaker.

    Dude, have you spent a lot of time in front of a camera, and editing video? If not your ease, and the fluid editing on what appears to be your first such production. are nothing short of amazing. I’ve been doing TH-cam vids (mostly film photography) for a long time and I’m still not that good. Excellent work all around (yeah, the patch ain’t bad either ;-))..

    • @Lightbath
      @Lightbath  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you. This is great encouragement! This was my first. I've done a small amount of editing, but never anything near this. Most of my practice has been making the modular pieces which only require lighting and framing. Editing in a NLE (that's not a DAW) is still very new to me. And this was definitely my first time in front of the camera. Truthfully it took me nearly 100 hours to produce both of these videos. I hope to get more efficient as I go because 100 hours is just not sustainable if I want to keep up a weekly/bi-monthly sort of schedule. Looking forward to making more!

    • @Lightbath
      @Lightbath  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ah, but I will say that I've taught music lessons for more than a decade so I do have lots of practice talking about the creative process 🤗

    • @mike.thomas
      @mike.thomas 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've been doing vids for years now, for much of that time admittedly at a pretty low/average level of production quality. But I have been improving of late. My photography productions, as they moved outdoors and became more complex, took much more time and it started to feel less sustainable, because all that work doesn't really lead to more views. My synth videos, which is a more recent passion, are much easier to produce, and *also* bring in few views, so there's that :-). Anyway, it's being interesting and creating a rapport with your viewers that does that, IMO. But you still have to compete, at least a little, in production.
      All that said, again I'm truly blown away how you got so many things nailed right out the gate: sound, light, exposure, script, edits. Just freaking amazing. And yes, people generally don't realize that production takes 5-25x the length of the final product.
      If I can help in any way, I will (though you seem to "be there" already, IMO). Contact me via private messaging here, if you like.

    • @Lightbath
      @Lightbath  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you, Mike! As I try new things maybe I could use a second opinion on an edit before it's finalized. I know in this one, I almost pruned it heavily because it was so long, but in the end I decided to keep all the sidetracks and anecdotes, which, although they add to the overall time, I think they also add to the fun. I could be wrong, though. Maybe a shorter video would perform better. Only time and experimentation will tell.

    • @mike.thomas
      @mike.thomas 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Generally, the "pruning" approach is right, though sometimes painful. However, if the content supports the length there is no issue. I didn't find the video to feel overlong at all.

      Sounds like an exciting year then! I will wait patiently;) I do think there is a somewhat surprising lack of detailed and educational tutorials on eurorack patches (not counting module-specific tutorials) so a series by one of the legends in the field would likely garner some attention.

  • @JeremyWWWWW

    Two words: "Rosetta Stone!"
    This so beautifully mirrors my Eurorack journey so far. Not in terms of scope or depth (I'm not there yet), but in terms of ideas, processes, and conceptual frameworks. The use of distinct overlapping voices, simultaneously generative and performative, is exactly what I'm up to. And your quasi off-hand reference to all your tools (modules) provides me with months of peeling away layers and digging deep into possibilities.
    Thank you for the inspiration. You are changing lives. Trust that.

    Not sure if I already tried to contact you as I already contacted a bunch of people today so I hope you don't feel spammed by me..
    I am curating a compilation album with music from the modular scene on TH-cam for the Leipzig based independend label 'Pattern//Select'. The album will be released on cassette tape around april 2018 and will be totally non-profit - all the sales will just be used to cover the costs of the production. We wanted to make more people aware of the great music that is created every day by all those creative and talented people here on TH-cam and give something back to this lovely scene. If you are interested in being part of the tape please tell me, I will put my e-mail adress into the comments so we can get in contact for further information about the project. So far, artists like Comparative Irrelevance, Atreyu's Horse, Kupka, Nick Jackson or Mike Thomas will be on the album.
    Greetings from Leipzig,
    Leon

    Top camera view plz

    • @Lightbath
      @Lightbath  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the suggestion. I actually tried and it looked really weird. A top view of a 6U looks great because it's at a single angle, but the two angles of the two cases requires, in my opinion, two cameras to get top views that fit into the frame and don't look strange. At the moment I have only a single camera, so the 12U patches will likely have to be a compromise in framing.
      And on that note is there anybody out there that wants to buy me this puppy?

    Can I ask you how do you made cello sounds with such long attack and decay on Plonk? I try to achieve this effect sending slow lfos from Batumi to Polonk, but I only get some percussion like sound :( Thanks!

      Sure. You have to not use the mallet section and only use the noise section with the slow attack/release. That'll do the trick!

    Just joined the Patreon, admittedly not at as high a level as I'd like. I remember months and months ago mentioning "You should have a Patreon, dude" as you were very helpful when I was trying to interpret your patch notes in order to understand how you were making the sounds you were making (I think on "Batumi Master"?), so consider that me putting my money where my mouth is. Now for the constructive criticism, which I hope you'll take in the spirit which it's intended: this is a lovely video and a lovely piece of music, but it's not really a tutorial. You're reverse engineering your track, which is valuable and entertaining in its own right, but the issue for me is that I don't own a lot of these modules and have no idea what some of them do, such as the Tirana and the Samara which feature heavily here), plus you're always adding modules to your setup faster than I can understand what they're for (I did go out and get a Batumi because of that video of yours and have been slowing working my way through its functionality). What I'd really, really, really like to see is taking an unpatched system all the way through to a patch, as well as explaining how you make the decision to patch modules together in a certain way, explaining what a module does along the way. Like, what exactly is a "Utility Waveform Processor."

      Thank you! And oh, just you wait. Your suggestion is great and is in alignment with what I have planned for the near future. I have two more video series that I'll be starting and one of those series is for live patching from scratch. I'll go slower and explain more about what's happening. And the patches won't be as large or as complicated as this one.
      But this video series is for peeking under the hood of finished patches. To keep the flow we're just peeking inside of my patch. It's intended for people who are already familiar with a lot of the modules. But I still do recommend this video for beginners and intermediates, if they're willing to either let the details slide, or to check out the patch notes up on Patreon and then Google the different modules to do their own research (or use the ModularGrid link in the description to see what I'm using and Google from there).
      For example, if you're unsure what Tirana and Samara are, you can just look them up and see. Then when you re-watch that part of the video you'll catch that I say that Tirana has a 4-step sequence (it's a simple sequencer) and that two channels of Batumi are being mixed in Samara (it's a mixer), and it'll make more sense.
      So yeah, I chose to keep the pace moving with this approach and not go into a granular level of detail. It's not a 101 class. More of a 401.
      That said, I feel this video is still very much a tutorial. Even if you don't know what certain modules are, if you let the details go and instead focus on how I'm presenting the overall concepts, you might find that it gently teaches you an approach to ambient generative composition.
      Either way, I think you'll dig some of the more detailed, foundational videos I have in the pipeline.
      Glad to have you on board with Patreon! I totally appreciate it and I look forward to sharing more bonus material to Patrons!

    "just listen; don't try to act, don't try to do."
    Truer words have ne'er been spoken.
    I, too, share your theory that generative patches reflect my inner state. As hippie dippy as that sounds.
