Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a TH-cam video every Tuesday plus an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 5:30pm GMT/BST on Twitch.

I'm the same with Vegemite 😀 I don't find Marmite salty enough and don't like the runny texture, but if I'd grown up eating Marmite I'd be sure to love it. If I couldn't get Vegemite, I could certainly make do with Marmite for my toast, but I wouldn't eat it off a spoon because of the runny-ness 🥰

The way I try to describe Marmite to a 'not-knower' is to say if you take a really mature cheddar, but then you "remove the cheddar" from the equation, the sharp-salty-savoury thing left, is kinda Marmite.

I'm afraid nobody from the other side of "The Pond" gets what us Brits call toast. It is not a limp slice of warmed bread with a hint of colouration on it. Our toast is dark, possibly slightly carbonised in places and very crisp. It is buttered whilst still red hot and immediately a thin layer of Marmite is applied, and then "straight down the hatch". BOOTIFUL!

Apparently ASDA Yeast Extract tastes literally identical to Marmite... But it's much easier to spread... This allows you to control the amount on the toast and spread it sparingly... But most people that try it for the first time... Don't spread it thinly enough on "Hot Buttered Toast" to consume immediately... They let the toast go cold and the Marmite then becomes a nightmare to spread... Then they'll spread it on thick like Nutella... The amount needed on one slice of toast should be no more than the size of your little fingernail... But no matter how many times you tell people... They never listen or learn... It has to be spread on "Hot Buttered Toast"... 🙄 So your Butter should already be loaded up on your knife and ready to spread the second the toast jumps out of the toaster... You could also try Marmite in your Gravy too... Or even putting a teaspoon of Marmite in a cup or mug and filling it with boiling water from the kettle... Then stir it until it's all dissolved and drink it like a Soup or Bovril. ☕ Some like to put Grated Cheese on Marmite and toast too... Cheers Alanna. 🍺 👍

For cooking, shove a teaspoon in a bolognese sauce or chili con carne. Makes it rich and meaty. My other half is veggie and it helps even more with quorn mince. In fact, I'd say it's essential if cooking with quorn mince.

Hello again, When I was a kid many, many years ago, we often had a roast beef joint for Sunday lunch. In those days a lot of fat was left on the meat by the butcher, which during cooking "moisturised" the meat and also rendered down into "beef dripping". This was collected from the roasting pan in a jug and was allowed to cool and solidify. A dark brown "scum" would then rise to the surface of the dripping. This was absolutely gorgeous when spread on hot toast. It usually started family fights over who was going to get to eat it. Happy days!

When my darling Mum was a child (during the depression and many things were scarce), she and her siblings loved "a piece" which was a slice of bread and dripping (not 'fresh' dripping, the stuff that had all the yummy bits from the roast in it). Mum's parents came to Australia from Staffordshire, so maybe Nanna brought the idea from home. I do know that Mum said it was absolutely delicious 👍

It's difficult to spread on toast because it's not meant to be spread. You don't want a thorough coating. It's meant to be smeared. You want to aim at about a half a teaspoonful per slice as a beginner.

So if you want to use it really well add a spoonful to a Chilli or ragu or gravy or any thick meaty sauce. It works really well as it adds a layer to the flavour but because its a background flavour it probably wont give you the same reaction that you are currently getting. Not even sure you'd notice it other than it just tasting like a nice deep sauce.

Make your toast, butter the toast, put a little bit of marmite on your knife, scrape the marmite off of the knife back into the jar, rub the knife across the toast. There will, most likely, still be too much marmite on the toast.

The trick to Marmite, and everyone thinks I'm crazy, is to toast the bread, then put it in the freezer for 20 minutes.
You want the toast stone cold so that the butter doesn't melt. Spread the butter on thick, like a plasterer covering a wall. Then spread on the Marmite, a fair amount, not too much, not too little. It mixes with the butter and that's what makes it taste delicious.
With warm toast the butter melts into the bread, then when you spread on the Marmite, all you taste is Marmite.
Before everyone writes me off as a lunatic, try it!

Actually I'm one of those unusual people who don't absolutely love it... but I certainly don't hate it! I remember being introduced to Twiglets at a friend's birthday party way back when I was about ten years old... I'd never actually heard of them before and didn't particularly like them. However as I grew older I started to lose my sweet tooth. Now I love Twiglets. Also I've eaten meals that used Marmite as an ingredient and they were fine.

Brilliant. I grinned so much my face aches! Marmite. Love it. On toast. On crumpets. On a sandwich, maybe with a good sharp cheese. The thicker the better - although it can feel like it's removing the skin from the roof of your mouth. Also a dash in a meaty soup or stew to bring out the meaty flavour. But even I'm not sure about Marmite in a pasta sauce.

I used to love Marmite but lived outside of the UK for many years and lost the habit. Next time I'm out shopping I'm going to get a jar - thanks for reawakening the memory. By the way just shopped an Emma mattress using your link. Cheers...

Try Bovril Alanna - use it straight from the jar on toast or bread just like Marmite. It burns less, has more flavour without aftertaste and spreads better.

Marmite smeared on potatoes before you roast them are lovely.

I love Marmite on toast. It disappeared off the shelves here in South Africa at the end of the peak of Covid-19, apparently because of the shortage of the yeast by-product from the breweries. Thankfully it's back again.

Tip, before the butter melts add a small amount of marmite.
I love both carbonara and marmite. I also love bolognese and tinned sardines but common sense tells me they don't belong together.
Try marmite in a savoury beef stew or cottage pie, you'll be surprised.

Add the cashews into some egg noodles and have it with a chow mein and you might change your mind. Also brush it on a steak and fry or grill it
