Hey everyone! Just wanted to say thanks to Brass Against for inviting me to join for this project. I’ve been a dedicated fan of Tool for over 20 years and also recently become a huge fan of Brass Against. Was a real pleasure and honor to work with such impressive professionals and to get the chance to channel my inner Maynard. It’s not often I can let it out a metal scream, but damn, it felt great. This meant so much to me. What an experience. 🙌🤘
Thanks for delivering such a brilliant performance Samuel, highly enjoyable for the dedicated fans of Tool and brass against to see your interpretation, would love to see more of your covers in the future! I wish you a happy and healthy 2019 and hopefully you will have some more Tool material to sink into in that year. Spiral out 🌀
I was so over the moon about Sophia when she did the Pot. I see this one with you in it and sadly did not give it a chance, until. You are every bit as good and it shows how much of a fan you are. My wish list is Jambi, or H. with you on vocals. Great job, Mr. Hope. I am now a fan.
@Adam Neely - agreed, one of my favourite Tool songs, and now one of my favourite renditions. P.S. - you want to give your mate Mr Beato a gentle nudge and get him to release his third "What makes this song great" Tool video he's been teasing since the last one? He promised after all.
In my intro to psych class, we were asked if we believed in the death penalty. The professor tasked us with writing a position paper on the subject, which caused me to undergo a personal crisis. Did I truly believe that the State's taking of a person's life could ever be justified? I wrote enough of a response to pass the class, but that question has stayed with me ever since. In fact, it stayed with me right up until the 9:38 second mark of this video, at which point the music was disrupted by a youtube ad for car insurance. I now know the answer to the question that has plagued me, and recognize that there are some things that even a lifetime in prison can't atone for. Natural justice must be pursued.
I honestly feel that any time the entire ensemble has passion put into their performance, there are immediate shivers and goosebumps... That may just be me, though.
I'm not gonna lie, when I first saw this I wasn't super enthused about hearing my favorite Tool song get massacred by a bunch of horns, but I'll be honest, the exact opposite happened. This is absolutely fucking badass.
For anyone criticizing the vocalist: singing Tool is harder than you might think for a vocalist, in my opinion he really put in all his time and energy to correctly represent Maynard and he did a terrific job.
momishka7 Omg that Right In Two cover is one of my all time favorite vids on you tube. The subtleties of the background noises (dogs barking etc.) is so fitting. Gives the song a real, authentic feel that no words can do justice.
Do you even play drums, mate? I reckon he did a fairly damn good job playing a 4 piece kit notwithstanding. Nailed the time, groove, fills, dynamics and essential fills.
Everyone is commenting on the brass or the singer, absolutely no one is giving the drummer credit for being on point giving Danny his dues. This dude absolutely slays this song. His poly’s are amazing.
Yes. Spot on my friend Danny Carey is the reason i started playing drums along with Mike Portnoy's work with Dream Theatre. So those two drummers along with Blake Richardson and Larnel Lewis i get all the workout i can handle. I am 66 now and it wears me out but worth the pain🤣 i don't know what Danny may think but i am guessing he likes it! My friends who i play with goung back decades always ask me why i started to learn with pieces so difficult. I just smiled and muttered to myself "what a bunch of pussies"🤣😂🤣
he is good, and yet, you can see that he struggles a lot in a section where he starts playing against the band (aprx 6:00). BUT it was Dany who made his part really hard to play/copy.
I can see he's a good drummer, but every time I watch one of these, I notice he isn't playing what I'm hearing. Like hearing a totally different fill, crashing symbols or just more drums to what he's playing
I was so blown away by the tool covers with sophia urista that I did not dare checking the lateralus cover because of being afraid that this-other-singer-guy wouldn't meet the standard. Boy was I wrong. I am really happy to state that Samuel fucking nailed it.

Whenever I've been asked "what's your favorite all time song?" Lateralus by Tool has always been my answer, hands down. I've listened to that song more than I can even imagine, Maynard has been my biggest inspiration in my love of singing, I know that voice so intimately. To hear, and almost as importantly see, Samuel Hope absolutely nail it was breathtaking. Every movement with his body perfectly matches what he's doing with his voice and what he's expressing, it's just one thing, so rare to see.
It doesn't only take a lot of skills to cover Tool's songs, it also does take a lot of confidence to choose to cover one of the most complicated bands in the world. In addition, I'd like to dedicate a compliment to Samual Hope too. I can see that you're a huge Tool's fan by the way you sing, and I love your body language through out the song. It's obvious that you 'feel' what you sing. Great job to both Mr. Hope and Brass Against. Hands down. 🙌

Never had the opportunity to go see them before, being from Belfast in Northern Ireland. I am travelling alone as I don't have friends are even remotely interested in this kind of music, but couldn't pass up the opportunity, we could be among the first to be hearing something new and very special that night. I just want to point out as a drummer of 24 years just how difficult it is to perform any Tool song at a proficient level. With that said this is about as good as I imagine anyone could do. By that I mean this is freakin incredible! Amazing Vocal performance!
the drummer in the video is fake; just a guy who can use the sticks adroitly; yet no way is he the talent needed to carry out the full drum sound in the recording.
This was mindblowingly incredible. Samuel knocked this out of the park, and Suphala's drumming woven around it was....perfection. I can't stop watching this on repeat. Just wow.
I've watched this a 100 times already. Never get bored of this. Love the vocals. Love the energy. Loved Suphala's bit in the beginning. Excellent cover!
I would buy tickets to see these guys play entire albums of Tool, APC, and Deftones. I like the female singer a lot for Audioslave but this guy nails Maynard's mannerisms and vocal inflections
Love all of the Brass Against covers, but I keep coming back to this one, it might very well be the most well executed cover across any genre of music. The pick was perfect and adapts to the big band sound and Samuel does a goosebump-inducing job of bringing the deep soulfulness of Maynard's style from the original track.
I went down a rabbit hole of Tool covers & fell upon this. This is awesome…absolutely love it. Straight onto my Rock & Grunge playlist but really, that title doesn’t do justice to this amazing melding of elements.
The fact that there exists another human alive that can come close to sounding like MJK.... is nothing short of astonishing. Albeit while still sounding like himself and not doing a “Maynard impression,” my god man-mad respect bro. MAD respect ✊🏻.

With that said this is about as good as I imagine anyone could do. By that I mean this is freakin incredible!
Amazing Vocal performance!
If you think this guy nails it you should watch John Kew absolutely slaying the kit to tool. That guy is insanely good
@@Arrica101 I second this, he's been doing it for a while and has worked up to some of the most insane DC tracks!
Homie was reading a damn chart... that's impressive
@@ericaustin6511 Oh yes. Imagine walking into the studio and someone hands you the drum part for a Tool cover. "oh, shit"
the drummer in the video is fake; just a guy who can use the sticks adroitly; yet no way is he the talent needed to carry out the full drum sound in the recording.
This was mindblowingly incredible. Samuel knocked this out of the park, and Suphala's drumming woven around it was....perfection. I can't stop watching this on repeat. Just wow.
Wooowwwwwwwww that scream at the end....... mind blown 🤯
I wish tool had the scream at the end. That was perfect.
Props to everyone for not seeing Lateralus as just another song, respecting its essence and how it's meant to be played. This is absolutely perfect.
Sam Hope, you're the man! Maynard's phrasing is so non-typical. Seriously difficult to cover. You absolutely nailed it.
I've watched this a 100 times already. Never get bored of this. Love the vocals. Love the energy. Loved Suphala's bit in the beginning. Excellent cover!
Sam's energy is incredible, his presence is amazing
I would LOVE to see the reaction of the Tool members seeing this piece for the first time! It send shivers down my spine!
Right? For both this and Pot. Because this is quality stuff right there.
These folks do such a great job!
In my opinion the greatest cover of brass against, great musicians and great vocalist, it's really professional, well done!
You know it is good when you have a smile on your face, can’t stop your feet from tapping and you have a faint tear in your eyes. Thanks. So. Much.
4:50 - huge credit to the vocalist for following Maynard. You did a great job
I LITERALLY CRIED
Me too
Can't stop coming back to this. What a performance!
Holy sshhh... What just happened.. BRAVO!!!;))))❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉😮😮😮
That breakdown at around 5:00 kills.
And the "solo" at 7:00 is INTENSE!!!
THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST COVER I'VE EVER HEARD IN MY WHOLE MISERABLE LIFE. (Why am I yelling?)
You are living vicariously.
(You feel pain)
You are yelling because there is so much more that beckons you....😊
Okeefe Music Foundation. Give it a listen and get back to me. They kill this.
UncleCharlieJoe because you are so happy? Good for you!
Samuel, amazing!
I would buy tickets to see these guys play entire albums of Tool, APC, and Deftones. I like the female singer a lot for Audioslave but this guy nails Maynard's mannerisms and vocal inflections
Agreed.
100%
One of the best covers of Lateralus I've ever seen
The scream at the end is effing Epic!!
Please do a cover of Parabol/Parabola
Johannicus YES!!!!!
*FUCK YES!!!*
Yaaaas!
AWW YIS
would watch at least 100 times :)
I went down a rabbit hole of Tool covers & fell upon this.
This is awesome…absolutely love it. Straight onto my Rock & Grunge playlist but really, that title doesn’t do justice to this amazing melding of elements.
A tool superfan here. You hace just done MJK and tne band proud with that cover... excellent !!!
Shaun Gibbs Oh good I was wondering when you'd get here
The fact that there exists another human alive that can come close to sounding like MJK.... is nothing short of astonishing. Albeit while still sounding like himself and not doing a “Maynard impression,” my god man-mad respect bro. MAD respect ✊🏻.
Super Job 👌
Bruh! I can’t even with you right now. Never have I been more excited about a tool cover. Except for that other time you guys did a tool cover.
At 1:13 it becomes apparent that these musicians are all seasoned and enthusiastic tool fans! Boom the passion!
Wow ! what a finish. Jeeeesus!
HECK YEA!!! I'm digging the singer, he gave his best and he's really into it!
I give the drummer 9.7/10 for this performance. 10/10 for the singer.
15/10 for the bari sax!!!
Amazing voice, as well as amazing Performance of anyo🥺
LYRICS
Black then white are all I see in my infancy
Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me
Lets me see
As below so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn beyond the lines of reason
Push the envelope, watch it bend
Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment, drawing way outside the lines
Black then white are all I see in my infancy
Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me
Lets me see
There is so much more
And beckons me to look through to these infinite possibilities
As below so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn outside the lines of reason
Push the envelope, watch it bend
Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind
Withering my intuition leaving opportunities behind
Feed my will to feel this moment
Urging me to cross the line
Reaching out to embrace the random
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come
I embrace my desire to
I embrace my desire to
Feel the rhythm, to feel connected
Enough to step aside and weep like a widow
To feel inspired
To fathom the power
To witness the beauty
To bathe in the fountain
To swing on the spiral
To swing on the spiral to
Swing on the spiral
Of our divinity
And still be a human
With my feet upon the ground I lose myself
Between the sounds and open wide to suck it in
I feel it move across my skin
I'm reaching up and reaching out
I'm reaching for the random or whatever will bewilder me
Whatever will bewilder me
And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been
Spiral out, keep going
Spiral out, keep going
Spiral out, keep going
Spiral out, keep going
Out-fucking-standing.... kudos to all. Big ups to Samuel, crushed the vocal. Amazing. Loved it!!
Did anyone else get cold chills from the very beginning, then big time cold chills at 4:23 then just hang on for dear life during the rest. I just cannot get enough of this. Please make more.
Outstanding! If someone told me before to imagine the brass version of this song .... I would have ridiculed it. Blessed be because you taught me a lesson. And because you did this!👍
