Congratulations on getting a decent time in those conditions mate, not the pb you hoped for but pragmatically: you've taken a huge step forward in prep, gels and hydration on the run, and physically with the HR monitoring showing your strength. Accentuate the positives! Hellish conditions here too, so bad they cancelled the Great South Run which was 30 minutes away from my half!
Thanks mate, I’m pretty darn happy overall if I’m honest, I did my best and I know within myself I couldn’t have done any more… and that’s all we can ask of our bodies! Yeah so gutted for everyone running the great south!
Well done Andy, still a great time in difficult conditions. That’s the issue with a marathon. After a long block of training it often comes down to the weather and how you are feeling on the day. But it’s an impressive time and entry to Boston/London/Berlin/etc. rest up and looking fwd to the next target
Great effort Andy!! Conditions were tuff! I managed a PB of 2.42.24 from 2.58. Saw you at mile 25 near the underpass. You gave me loads of info during this training block and I am so thankful. Onto the next🫡
Again, congrats Andy. 2:44 is a good time. You had a great training cycle and had a very good fitness level, avoided injury, solved your fueling issues but sometimes things that you cannot control get in the way. It was one of those days. Keep positive, keep your fitness level up I am sure you will get that PR soon. 👊
Great racing in such unfavourable conditions. Hats off to you for keeping mentally strong and rolling the dice to get as much out of the race as possible.👏💪👍
Well done Andy 👏🏻 I did Abingdon yesterday and it was really tough in the conditions; such a shame. Did manage to a new 5 minute PB of 3:25 so very chuffed with that 😊
Hey Andy, this is incredible in such weather, very very far from weather conditions suitable for racing. My big Congrats! Great time and pace in those conditions. You're my great inspiration! Thanks a lot for your great thoughts, views on your running channel. All the Best with further training and preparing for PBs! I'm sure they will come. :)
I emphasize! Last year I ran my first (and so far only) marathon through the remains of a tropical storm. 44 mph winds, heavy rain bands, long stretches along farmer’s fields with no protection from the wind, and about 6km of the race was along a trail with mud and deep puddles. It was a ton of fun, and it leaves me confident that given a better day I could have gone faster. It’s nice to have the built-in excuse. 😅
Thanks for being real, Andy. I love and respect the fact that you show it as it is and don’t dress it up as something it is not. You ground it out and got a fab time in awful conditions. Mucho congrats.
What you did out there was incredible Andy, given thoes weather conditions you would have been within your rights to stay with your group, but you didn't you went for it! and you should be very proud of yourself for that! The fact that you got no cramps etc means your fueling/conditioning was spot on. Like you said all you could do was control the controllable and you did that!
Incredible run in unbelievable conditions andy. Feel so sorry for you that you got so unbelievably unlucky to get storm Ashley on that one day!☹️ you have certainly paid you dues, next one will be perfect conditions I hope
You’re an actual star 🌟 those were not fun conditions to go for a PB but you just put the weather to one side and went for it. Good for you. It was so good to hear at the end that you weren’t broken or disappointed and I look forward to the race recap.
Well done Andy. Watched a few of your videos and I feel for you. I did the Bath Bristol Railway Marathon yesterday in the same conditions, and my race seems to have mirrored your experience. All good until mile 23 and then the effort of running into the wind kicked in - three minutes off my PB. Great time in those conditions big man.
Great run Andy. For a minute there it looked like you were running with Ben Felton -- same look / build. Sorry for the rough weather conditions. Sure beats the heat though but yeah the wind can be a total deal breaker for a great race. I know how much work you put into this one and you looked great at the end and you have every right to be pleased. Also looked like a beautiful course. Chin up and I can't wait to see what you have in store next!
It’s so disappointing when the weather doesn’t play ball! You did incredibly well in those conditions. Frustrating when you know you’re in the best shape. Congratulations on a great race Andy 🎉🎉
Great effort, Andy. The conditions definitely played their part! I, like you, are pretty philosophical about it. I came in 30 secs off a PB. I'll be back, loved the course, hopefully with better weather.
Congrats Andy you done so well for this also got court in storm was playing football and during one game had to miss vlogging the match it was that bad
Superb effort mate, regardless of the conditions 2:44 is a superb time never mind in that storm! Thanks for the great vid, look forward to the next chapter, enjoy some time off now and see you soon!
Historic effort indeed! I agree with you better to blow out trying than playing it safe - what’s the fun in that!? Very well done, it was brutal out there!
Thanks! I was in the right mindset for a full send… wait sat their like a coiled spring for so long then just cut lose and went for it! Good fun overall
I've enjoyed following you on this training block; I'm in awe of your drive, dedication and application towards your goal. Strangely, the end result isn't that important (to me - although I'm sure you disagree), the journey is the compelling component. Shout out to your significant others for their support, without that this wouldn't have been possible.
Thank you 🙏 I am of a similar mindset… standing week after week of training ticks my boxes far more… the taper and the rebuild are the worst weeks 😂 I always look at a block and say to myself “gosh, imagine the fitness you’ll get from this at the end” and that really excites me 💯
Thats a great time in those conditions Andy, but I do feel for you!! Literally 1 awful day of weather and it falls on marathon day 🙄. I had a similar experience in 2018, training for the London marathon. It was a cold winter for training, we had the storm, " the beast from the east" amongst others, but still my training went well. Then marathon day came around and it turned out to be the hottest on record at 24 degrees, I along with many others, wilted in the heat that day! 😏
Oh wow yes mate I remember that year well! I had 2 races in March cancelled with snow and then suddenly the weather switched and it was like a tropical heatwave!!
congratulations for a great fight. You did all you could do, sometimes it is just not meant to be. I count the way you ran as a win, and the time very good considering the terrible weather. Have a good recovery and then on to new adverntures
Thanks Thomas! I’m proud and I’m happy, that’s all we can ask for right? I’ve grown as a runner during this block and I’m excited to move forward now 👊
@@TheFODRunner yes, you have developed into a complete runner, and that includes the ability to put the right perspective on the race times. I agree with you that this race with the weather and the way you raced is kind of a graduation, which sets you up in a very good way for the next chapter in your running
Fantastic effort Andy! Shame about the weather but you pushed on and had a fantastic result regardless! I ran my 2nd ever marathon on Friday the 18th in Milton Keynes and smashed my PB from London by a whopping 27 minutes! Finishing with a time of 3:57:54 and coming 3rd overall!
Really hard conditions. I had a very similar experience although I was very much back of the pack in this field. I just ran out of juice at 20 miles as the wind just sucked the energy out of me. I stayed tough and finished in my B-target pace. Well done on a fantastic run and thanks for all the info you share.
Really good effort Andy! I really struggled yesterday, crazy pain in my calves, which I've not experienced before. It's so frustrating to train hard for x1 effort and things not go according to plan. On to the next one! You'll be get sub 2:40!
Ah man. I'm gutted for you. Could've bet my house (glad I didn't!) that you were on for a PB. Still a great time in those conditions mind. Really enjoyed watching your training series. Keep the faith 👊
You were so unlucky Andy. The one time training and nutrition was spot on and you were foiled by the elements instead. Bloody marathon eh! GFA application for London and go again!!
Never mind eh! We go again, lots gained from this training cycle, excited to wrap the year up strong now 👊 thank you for your support btw, I saw your comment on Tim’s video too 🤘
People think it's flat but Paul F told us that Tilsley Park is the same altitude as the TOP of the County Hall in the marketplace. So it's a slow grinding climb those last few miles even without the **** wind!
Well done, excellent effort. I thought you were very sanguine about the wind in your preview. In my experience a tail wind is never as beneficial as a head wind slows you down. Maybe run another marathon in a couple of weeks?!
Thanks! Yeah I agree, I think the headwind takes too much out of you to benefit from the tail wind! No buddy, sadly! Rest - recover - reset and go again 👍
Tough luck Andy but great effort! I was there too and can testify to the horrible conditions. Are you tempted to carry that fitness into another marathon attempt this year? Goodwood or Oulton Park perhaps?
Thanks, it was nasty wasn’t it! No, in all honesty 😂 I’ve mentally moved on now, proud of the run, I’m satisfied that I’ll go again next year and give it another shot
And feeling pretty good post race in all honesty! But no, sadly not, taking a week off to absorb everything and mentally reset ready for the next push 👊
I think you could hang your hat and be proud of that race you kick butt that time in those conditions that probably took 10 minutes off your total marathon well done. I would say marathons are hard. I just told the friend who wants to do 100 K someday or next year and I said you already do marathons those are harder. This will be easy, good job and well done again and also thanks for caring us all along with you
Well done Andy! Terrible conditions but you gave it your all. 👍 personally I would try and run another marathon in the not too distant future. Your heart rate is good, quicker than ever and it’s worth giving it another go and then go back to project sub16 5k. 👍
Thanks James! Honestly, I’m quite looking forward to moving on now, for a split second I considered it but I’ve got a plan now, which is all mapped out and races booked… I’ll share the details soon 🤘
Thanks Tom! UK weather is so unpredictable year on year, you just can’t guarantee anything!! I refuse to do London next year as it’s the very end of April and usually it’s super hot.. but I guarantee I won’t enter it and it’ll be mega cold 😂
Well done on getting round but even without the bad weather it looks a shocker of a course. Why train for 12 weeks and then pick what looks like the Dog and Duck marathon for a PB attempt? You say you can only control the controllables but picking a decent marathon is a controllable. Amsterdam was on the same day. Flights are £150 return and the Vlog value would be loads better.
Completely agree, course looks absolutely wank! Can't fathom the rationale behind doing a training block and then choosing a marathon like this unless you literally cannot afford to go abroad or somewhere more interesting
Thanks buddy 👍 so the recent weather definitely did that course some damage. The main loop is fast, and id say one of the fastest on the right day… there are however two sections that weren’t ideal and that was mainly due to the recent weather that made them a mud bath sadly…. I appreciate it’s not the organisers fault but it definitely wasn’t fun. However it’s one of the 7 UK marathons that’s now a marathon major qualifier… i was rejected from Berlin a couple of years ago due to my time not being on a certified course… so I didn’t want that to happen again, hence the selection 👊 I’m not saying I’ll definitely do Berlin next year BUT this has now open doors for me with regards to options 👍
@@TheFODRunner You ran really well Andy but why on earth are they having a double loop course that runs on what looks like a muddy bike path? The video cut away but it looked like you were going to be stuck behind people doing their first loop. Crazy
@@tomw2889 I’ve got some footage to be fair that I mutter some expletives about it… 2 loops doesn’t bother me, but yes the path from miles 2.5/3.5 onto the big main loop was extremely muddy and then on the big loop there is a cycle track section, which I can only describe as having thah bouncy tarmac stuff you find in a kids playground? So it saps the life from your legs with each step! If those two small sections were removed it would be a no brainer for a lot of people, but those two sections are very unfortunate… made worse of course by the permanent rain we’ve had lately! And yes, we caught up with some runners so there was some ducking and weaving going on! I’ve got my abbots qualifier now, that’s what I wanted ✅ didn’t want to get rejected again if I applied for a big race next year!
Excellent running in tough conditions :). Very nice race vlog.

If I run 40 minutes slower than you boss this weekend I'll be very happy. What a great effort fair play to you for attacking it and emptying the tank
Good luck, I hope you have a great race!
thats amazing time I wouldnt f with marathons 20k would be absolute max for me and thats gonna take well over 2hrs
Thanks 🤘
Thats why you dont run a autumn/winter marathon in the uk 😅 still a solid effort mate
Weather is so bloody unpredictable 😂
@@TheFODRunner you going to race newport 2025 mate?
@@28mouse85 no buddy, having a spring off from marathons, will go again in the autumn next year!
Good time Andy but wow that looked like an awful course and crap weather, precisely why I wouldn't run a provincial UK marathon
Went aboard earlier in the year, will probably go abroad again next year… I just chose a more local race for the second half of the year 👍
@@TheFODRunner You ran really well Andy but why on earth are they having a double loop course that runs on what looks like a muddy bike path?
