Yes - I must admit, I felt she was rather false & 'cutesy', but with maturity I see she had a warm heart & cared 4 the viewers. She made them feel she was a pal I'm sure that meaht a great deal especially 2 thcse that were widcwed etc. What a sad, premature death she had.
Annies headstone is in Carleton cemetery in blackpool, not far from the lodge in a secluded area which is accessible to the public. Its beneath a tree.
The phrase "Maintenance Shop" comes up in the Guardian's listings for 21 Jan (note that I haven't actually been able to read them, but you can still use the search engine anyway) but not for any other day that week. So I think we can reasonably assume it's the 21st.
Although I live in the New Forest as well as receiving Southern Television,Telvision South and Meridian I also could receive HTV WEST. The late Annie St. John,as well as being one of the first two hostess on Yorkshire Telvisions 321 programme, also announced forv Tyne TeesTelevision and LWT. A shame she died so young. But will always be remembered as one of the great persons of Regional ITV. Disabled UK Carrer. GOD BLESS!
Annie St John is ... *interesting*, here. This is from the night of Thursday 21st January 1988, early hours of Friday 22nd (check the BFI listings for Tales of the Unexpected).
remember annie and michael in happier days in cardiff, with the 2cv red/white, they were my next door neighbours........annie, if your looking down on us from heaven, i am still really sorry for flooding your house!
A fascinating collection of adverts there. I had no idea Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie has advertised tobacco. Also the British Rail InterCity 125 advert is a little gem.
I would hazard a guess that Blackpool was her hometown or that she felt a special affinity with the area maybe. Wikipedia doesn't give her birthplace and I couldn't turn it up anywhere else. I should like to visit her grave sometime, could you tell me where the headstone is in that cemetery?
No, it's Philip Pope - who does a great deal of music for television today. Not that he wasn't doing the music at the time, but he was also a performer in the 80's/early 90's, doing spots on 'Who Dares Wins' and 'KYTV'.
I recall her tragic suicide a mere 2 years after this very well. She cluhg 2 life apprx 1 mth I believe. The HTV bulletems were always awkward - Bruce & her clleagues were scared 2 say it was a suicide attempt, I guess because she'd be embarrassed if she survived. But the papers gave the full, grim tale. I seem 2 recall it was paracetmel plus she tried 2 hahg herself frcm her bath shcwer rail. It seemed scarily determihed. & it was all triggered by a guy - he was married & I suspect she gave him the ultimatum but he refused 2 leave his wife 4 her. I wish she had a pal 2 suppcrt her thru that & persuade her he was a chump! A few years later, HTV had similar bulletims re the TV celebrity Leslie Crcwther. He had a terrible car crash & like her, he had life suppcrt 4 weeks. He did evemtually wake, but he was a shell & it was sad 2 see him like that.
I remember her when I lived for a while in Bristol with my grandparents as a teenager. We could also pick up HTV West here in south Wales. Annie was one of my favourites. I didn't know she tried to hang herself from her shower rail. Do you have a source for that? I just wrote a short biography of her on my blog: suicidesofcelebrities.blogspot.com/2021/06/annie-st-john.html
Indeed... but she came back to HTV. As a kid I always found her really irritating, like an auntie trying too hard to be your friend. Now I really appreciate her style. Bless her
Yes that's exactly my feeligs - as a kid I felt she was try 2 hard, but with maturity I see she did care & value her viewers. What a tragically brief life she had - it's crazy that she herself decided 2 have that terrible, premature exit. She seemed 2 have it all - beauty, ycuth, a glam career, etc etc. She threw it all away due 2 her heartbreak 4 a married guy. She always seemed rreally happy & sparkly - it remihds us we have zilch clue what ppl really suffer behihd their smile.
Oh Annie, Annie, Annie you were the best continuity announcer ever RIP

The only continuity announcer you'd stay up late for.... I was only 11. Miss you Annie :'(

I've updated Annie's WP entry myself using official records (yes, she was definitely from Blackpool).
Annie was also on 3-2-1 as one of the troupe of hostesses, the Gentle Secs. She was on the first series.

By October 1988, all 15 regions of the ITV network were broadcasting 24 hours a day. BBC1 kept closing down for the night until November 1997.
@CJODell12 when the BBC news channel started overnight on bbc 1 (when it was called BBC news 24)
Although we got HTV Wales, we used to tune into HTV West just to see Annie.
She was so friendly and down to earth.
Real shame what happened 😪

Awww very sad that her marriage failed. Had she stayed happy with him & maybe had kids, she'd likely still be here.

i've dug thru' my albums and found annie's citroen , actually a red dyane , covered in snow from the big freeze early 1982

Jesus - Angel Place at 8.40!! I used to go there all the time when we lived in Bridgwater.
Well, I knew that the Tales of the Unexpected was 22 Jan, but do they make it clear it's the next night?
Is that Jim Broadbent advertising Varta batteries at 2:30 approx?!
Love the train advert at the start! :D 5/5
I liked the advert for piles cream!
Wow, is that Peter Wyngarde doing the DTi voice-over?
Poor Annie, what some thought was eccentricity and spontaneity was her mental disintegration. She is missed and so is HTV. ITV destroyed regional TV.

Funny (sad) to think Annie was so jovial, yet so (mentally) tormented.
cruel world RIP
