- Been meaning to do this for a while now as to complete the no bombs challenge for every regular touhou shooter.
The hardest parts of a no bomb run of MS are the latter half of stage 4 and the stage 5 and 6 boss. That spam at 13:57 requires very precise execution or else you'll be swamped. Reimu definitely makes stage 4 a lot easier to handle though.
There were some really stupid mistakes in this run but it could have been a lot worse I guess. That Shinki bug was a complete slap in the face though.
Also the framerate is a bit botched up in this one bleh.
I really love how ZUN used one of Shiniki's spells and re-vamps it for Hijiri Byakuren in UFO. Seeing little nods to the older games is always cool to see in the newer ones.

This game is so nice to look at despite being over 20 years old.
Except for the blue bullets on blue backgrounds in stage 4 and 5
lower poly games had to rely a lot more on stylisation so i don't think it's a 2d vs. 3d thing, but a style vs. "muh gwaphics"

i think it was also on a wiki i've read that her becoming youkai is the actual reason to be an extra stage boss. something along the lines of "let's see if you can win against me again" kinda "new powers testing". fits well, imo.

And her design is trash compared to them, but the spinning almost saves her from being even more forgettable.

In fact the original word translated to Devil (魔神) means "Makai God"
Shinki inspired a LOT of attacks actually. Her first attack with the wings has similarities to Yuyuko's second non-spell in PCB, of course, Devil's Recitation, her first purple wing attack has a lot of similarities with Sanae's Wonder "Night with (Overly) Bright Guest Stars", her grub spam is like Kanako's left-right nonspell, and her last attack (this one might just be me) resembles a very toned down Border of Life and Death.
Good gosh. I uploaded my 1cc Easy clear of Touhou 6 The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, but I clearly have a looooong ways to go XD.
That Shinki bug is really silly. I'm just amazed I haven't found it before.
Bug? Pff, It's just Shinking testing If you have more than one life to take her on or else It would be an insult to be challanged by a mortal.

I'm nowhere near enough of a genre expert to comment on anything specifically, so I'll just say...
Everything about this game looks like it holds up very well today. With MAYBE the exception of the blue-on-blue-on-blue madness of Stage 4. Reimu probably wanted to hug all the fairies who finally showed up with red bullets. But hey, the cool double-boss concept makes up for it.
Shinki's character design is just fabulous. Just LOOKS like a cool final boss.

That Shinki bug, I've had that for a while; there's a way of avoiding it even if it does occur all the time.
At either the beginning or end of Shinki's Cyanblue hp-balk it will kill you if you're: not moving, vertically under her (is much wider than just herself.) Or horizontally under her.
The solution is to move to one of the sides at the bottom; do it just a little before the cyanblue hp-bar shows up.
Hope this helps a bit.

OMG, you guys won't believe that. But this bug was caused by Yuki and Mai's last move. Their homing lasers stay in memory at the beginning of the fight.
@@gontasfanboy I thought so too, so I tried not to shoot her at the beginning and I just ??? EXPLODED out of nowhere. Searched about it and turned out it was because of the last cheeto lasers of Yuki and Mai.

Huh, didn't know I watched this 2 years ago. For the curious, the cause of that Shinki glitch is: If you defeat Yuki or Mai while they are shooting out the "cheeto" bullets, the bullets will get stored in memory and be reactivated (though invisible) at the next fight that has "cheeto bullets", which is, obviously, Shinki's fight.
So basically you're being killed by invisible cheeto bullets left over from the 1st phase of Mai and Yuki's fight. You can actually still dodge them, if you move immediately and are very lucky lol. But the safest option it to bomb the second the fight begins. Well. If you're not on a no-bomb run, at least ;;
Today I learned that Mystic Square has a sound option that uses arcade-cabinet-sounding beeps and boops instead of the normal sounds, and it sounds just awful.

I tried it and it doesn't sound as bad as you made it out to be, the only problem I had with it were the annoying shooting sounds because I always held the Z button down. (except for on that one Alice spellcard)

@mstrswrd There's a known bug with the Shinki fight that causes spontaneous death.
@takulu64 The stage 4 theme is inspired by "Last Battle" from the game "Lufia & The Fortress of Doom" I think.

I'd need to find a citation on this, but I recall reading something on one of the wikis that said that her dialogue with Yuuka(?) suggests that she was already a Youkai or at least in the process of becoming one in Stage 3.
I was absolutely terrified when I saw the barely visible exploded star particles on first stage's grassland. Please tell me they aren't bullets...

I'm not him but, no one starts pro at something out of blue, if he started Touhou and has a pro on his first play he is either godly or he played a harder shooter before, and I bet that if that's the case that harder shooter gave him a loooot of rage XD

Well I do know you're right about that. One of the great things about Touhou is that you can see yourself improve over time. I was so proud of myself when I could make it to Okuu on Medium because at first I was having huge difficulties with cat form Orin. Did you start off not so pro either?

Infinite Creations It does make sense because it adds an extra challenge. That's the whole point of a No-Bomb.
And that doesn't mean that you have to no-death it as well. A NMNB (NoMissNoBomb) is many MANY times more difficult and I guess in a game like Mystic Square just near impossible because MS has some insane boss attacks and a bug at shinki that makes you randomly lose a life after the dialogue.
I've done Lunatic No-Bombs as well, but that doesn't mean that I can come even near to a NMNB run.

Not only skill but also playing some other shmup games came in handy to learn dodging the bullets.

They study the bullet patterns to see how they work and find the widest gap possible to dodge the bullets. It's all about trial and error plus practice.

... but... it's like that with every touhou... or rather... u just have to 1cc on normal or harder for the good ending and to unlock the extra stage. but doing the extra stage itself is optional... it's just a bit of "extra".

@@shrimp0353 I don't think any other Touhou game holds up as well as Mystic Square. Let's break it down.
*Gameplay*
Gameplay is really tight, even to this day. The four playable characters are distinct but not too radically different, requiring a different play style. It's sucks though because the next game, EOSD, would go back to the LLS system. Aside from the Phantasmagoria games, we wouldn't get that system back until TD, LOLK, and HSFS (and the less said about TD, the better.) Sure there was the team mechanic in IN, but it's just not same, y'know?
*Story*
Mystic Square, while simple, probably has my favorite setup. Shortly after LLS, an large influx of youkai start swarming Gensokyo, leaving Reimu with a frustrating amount of extermination to do. Wanting to stop this, Reimu decides that she should head towards Makai to see if she can stop this invasion along with Marisa, Mima, and Yuuka who each have their own agenda. It's only until all four characters realize that the influx of youkai are because of a civilian travel agency that is arranging tours of Gensokyo and that the creator of Makai, Shinki, had no say in the ordeal.
While I wouldn't specifically say that all your actions were "genocide", it kinda make you wonder if what you're doing invading Makai was really the right thing to do. Should we really trust Shinki that this doesn't fall within her jurisdiction? Or should we take matters into our own hands and have her pull back everyone? It's a good ass dilemma that makes you wonder about the world of Gensokyo and it's inhabitants after finishing the game.
*Music*
Probably one of my all-time favorite soundtracks ever. I'm serious.
Right from the title screen down to the credits, the game just floods you with atmospheric yet upbeat tracks (which also contain motifs from HRTP) that gives me goosebumps, even to this day. This has to be ZUN's best work when it comes to music.
Do I hate every game after Mystic Square? No, every game in the series is awesome in their own way. But Mystic Square will always be this series Magnum Opus imo.
(except TD. TD was god awful.)

From windows version the touhou 6-14 are the best for windows, after touhou 15 and more it doesnt give the eastern vibe like it was
