      Good stuff, and I have two fly rods..... That I know nothing about! One is a Shakesphere 9', that's supposedly from the 60's. I only have an old fly reel, and don't know anything about line or how to cast a fly rod. Maybe you have done videos of how to set up a fly rod for fishing. The number system, for the rods I have, don't appear to be in use on them.

    I have never fly fished for Trout. I bought my fly rod specifically for finessing fishing for Bass. And I love it. Living up in Minnesota, I'm always hitting the Mississippi River and small river channels. Them smallies are pretty aggressive. Sometimes they hit it as soon as my fly lands on the water. And you're absolutely right. Accuracy is key. But I tell you what, many times it feels like I'm fighting a large rock! A few times, I would have to walk backwards just to help reel them in. LoL.

    Thank you for an excellent video and bass on a fly tutorial. I have been a trout fishing dude for 30 years in the Rockies and was transferred to the west Houston Texas area 10 years ago and have fished only 3 times… I know… what a freakin sin! So now I am tying bass bugs and rigging up to go kick some bass!
    Thank you sir… very inspirational

      Yeah, I'm all in for fly fishing for bass! You covered the subject from the many facets that it requires. One other angle I'd like to hear your experience with is this. I moved to N. Ga. recently and looked forward to the trout fishing. Well long story short, the deepest,clear water reservoir is 15 minutes from my driveway. I'm talking walk to the truck,15min. later, the kayak is launched and I'm casting in 3-2-1..... Hey, 'ya want to review kayaks as a casting platform, this place is great. I believe you'd like it. Largemouth, spotted, hybrid and stripes. Also kinda weird, some enormous carp. If you're ever this way, I'd like to know. I do like showin' off the home waters.

    • @reggieramjet5362
      @reggieramjet5362 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yeah, the other angle is kayak use. Sorta rambling on...jumped time..

    Practice, practice, practice casting. You can have all the latest and greatest gear, boxes of the perfect flies.
    BUT, if you can not cast and put the fly where you want to, you are not going to have very much fun!!😂😂😂😂😂😂
    Great info...Alvin!! Sure wish we had more bass fishing near our home waters!!

    Alvin, great series of videos about fly fishing for bass from someone who is an expert on the subject. You are so right, bass are everywhere. The drainage ditches in my subdivision are full of them. I really liked your discussion about how bass fly fishing techniques carry over to making you a better saltwater fly fisherman. So true. This is the best bass fly fishing video series on TH-cam IMO. Your videos are refreshing in the way that you discuss technique, presentation and equipment when almost all other videos just show fish after fish caught without any discussion about the how and the why. You are a great teacher . Keep teaching us and making us think. Thanks.

    Great video. This was my first year of ( fly only ) bass fishing. I had to really work at the hook set. But your so right in everything you say in this video. I fished a retirement turnimate that some guys from work out together. They all laughed at me when I pulled out my fly rod. They all needed tissue afterwards. I had 14.7 with four fish. Three other guys caught fish, but only one each.lol I love it when that happens. It isn't very often. Loved the video.

    Good job Alvin. I appreciate the videos and fly tying instructions. I catch everything on a fly rod from trout to carp. The thing I like most about fly fishing for bass is that you don't need a long leader. The fish is so aggressive that usually 6 feet is more than enough. Keep it up. Love the channel man.

    Lived in Colorado and Montana most of my life so ya fish trout a lot . Spend time in Alaska , Mexico, Belize get to enjoy all of that . But my parents lived in Florida , so many years ago when I went to visit I brought my 6wt to fish a lake by there house . Bag ! big large mouth bass , I remember the first one I caught it scared the crap out of me it killed a popper . Now I look for places that have bass although it’s a little Tuff here I have found some places relatively close and love to fish them . Only thing I did different going back to visit my folks was bring an 8wt , bass seem to really like to hang out in cover when you hook them it’s nice to have a little more rod to try to keep them from getting deeper into it so you can get them out . Love your channel keep videos coming.
    Happy Trails

    Thanks for addressing bass fly fishing. I started fly fishing in 2009 for bass and panfish. Before that I was a gear fisherman, never fly fished for trout. I use many rods from a 4 wt. for panfish to a 6 wt. for river smallies and an 8 wt. for largemouth bass. I agree with you about more casting leads to better casting. I live in Virginia an we have good smallmouth, largemouth, and panfish rivers and lakes. Thanks again for bringing this up, hope to make it to TX to fish someday.

    Great stuff man! Question: What is the rule of thumb for picking fly color, dark water dark fly, clear water colorful fly? Also why is it that none of the flies I use when I fish the green belt down in Austin work up here in Dallas ?

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
      @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah that basic rule of thumb is our usual starting point. I do know some people who use black flies in all conditions and still seem to catch fish. I try not to get stuck in a patterns if what I'm doing isn't working. Sometimes I find something that I didn't expect starts catching fish. But that's just fishing. Sometimes nothing works. Now I don't know why those Dallas fish don't like Austin flies, I thought it would be the other way around. 😂

    • @willcross9625
      @willcross9625 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dark water i go to dark flies like your blacks and purples clear water however you want to go natural like light brown or olive colored flies but really just let the fish tell you what they want.

    • @sam_is_on_marz
      @sam_is_on_marz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd say for the darker water if it's dark because the water is stained, stick to natural patterns such as Light brown or olive! NOW if the water is dark due to mud or debris Id try to find what the body of waters smallest but brightest colors on its baitfish are, because if its small but bright i can guarantee those bass are zoning in on them! and if it's super muddy and the bass aren't hitting your fly (that being whatever, Game changer, bunny leach, Bush whacker etc) try to maybe go to a crawfish pattern or maybe a worm pattern/tye and if fishing bottom doesn't help, whip out some poppers like a Baby bass pattern for those elders to zone in on or just a straight up hopper fly!!! good luck!!

    Really appreciate this series. Any specific tips for targeting Guadalupe Bass? I live on the San Gabriel in Georgetown and catch them routinely on spinning tackle, but am pretty new to fly fishing and would love to land some guads on the fly.

    Thanks for the video. I have several ponds close to where I live that have water year round. I would be very interested in hearing where you would try to catch a bass if you were fishing the pond for the first time. Several of the ponds are are around golf course with limited structure. Thanks!

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
      @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would start by just walking the banks from a distance to see if there is any activity. If so then start at the banks. If there is no obvious structure the fish should be patrolling the banks.

    I enjoyed the excellent insight and discussion. Subscribed. Would overlining a fast action 5 wt 9 ft rod work for small to medium bass in rivers? (Thinking of a Helios 2 5 wt, for example )

    Well dagumit. I just got into Fly fishing and my local pond has bass. I went and bought a 5 weight White River prestige rod, reel, and line combo. Can I still set it up for bass, or do I need to come up with another reason to purchase my second fly rod? Also, I just subscribed, great videos.

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
      @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The 5 weight is going to work for you. Just learn to cast and catch some fish. We actually fish 5 and lighter on some of the smaller waters. Good luck out there.

      @@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing Alright then. Thank you for a quick response. I'm definitely still working on my cast. I'm going to try a woolley bugger and a medium sized white fly tomorrow.

    What length rod do you like to use, a traditional 9’ or one of the new 7’11” “bass” rods?

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
      @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most of the time we use 9' rods. I know a few people who use the shorter rods and they like them.

    Hey hey, thanks for the advice Alvin. I'm up in Austin been trying to get into bass on the fly but haven't really caught the bug yet (pun intended). I can grab plenty of blue gill and sun fish but just can't get those dang bass to bite. Admittedly most of the time I prefer top water or dry flies so that might be the issue. Question, when blind casting with a wet fly do you always feel a solid tug when they bite? I'm wondering if I'm missing the hook set.

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
      @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes you do, but sometimes it's just a tap or the fly just stops. I usually set the hook no matter what. Hook a lot of rocks and logs, but I have been surprised by a fish plenty of times.

    Awesome video! I was wondering what type of fly line do you usually prefer to fly fish for bass with? Sinking, sink tip, floating etc.. Thanks in advance!

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
      @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My preference is floating lines, but depending on the time of year we use sink tips when we need to get down. Since we are mostly in rivers, we don't use full sinking lines very often.

      Alvin Dedeaux great video, looking forward to this series. To go along with Andrew’s ☝🏼 question on fly line, is there a particular kind you prefer for Bass fishing? Like maybe Rio’s Bass line, Jungle line or Tropical Outbound Short, etc?

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
      @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your 5 weight will work fine. We use them for bass on the smaller streams. If you start throwing bigger flies or target bigger bass you can step up to a 7, but I say use what you have. Good luck!
