Ok, going with the hypothesis of our existence being a simulation, is there any real reason for us not to be consciously aware of the fact that we are in a simulation if we are the 'players?' I can't imagine many would be up for playing a game or participating in a virtual reality wherein you would lose access to everything you know outside of that experience. That said, if it were a simulation of the past and/or some super advanced implementation of a general life simulation, like that of one of the earliest simulations appropriately titled, 'Life,' then that would make much more sense, but that would lend itself more to our existences being literally artificial and nothing more than a product of that advanced simulation, in which case, when we die, we would literally cease to exist and then whatever resources our entity utilized would be cleared and allocated for a new entity to take our place. John Taylor I also think that, if this is the case, then the time difference is vast - I mean, really vast. Similar to us humans sitting down and playing a game for an hour or so, than perhaps that is what this master civilization or eternal beings are doing with our lives. Sitting down for an hour (give or take) to play Humans. So if we are also just a computer simulation it would be possible that a trillion years in our world is 1 second in the world of the creators of our simulation, which means they maybe just started the simulation and so far only a 0.013 seconds have passed in their world and 13 billion years in ours. By the time they realize artificial intelligence was created inside their simulation it might be too late for them, by that time trillions of years have passed for us and we might since long have figured out how to hack their code and how to access their world wide or universal wide web, and begun launching missiles all over their world or universe. Well, except computer games, there are many other types of simulations that people use. Some of those simulations store every step individually, so you have access to every moment in the simulation. For example rendering 3d graphics for films - in this case every frame stored separately after processor finish calculating it. Probably if our world is a simulation on it own, it has "cache files" somewhere. Theoretically if you somehow will get access to that files, you will travel in time from perspective of our world. Another thing that blows my mind - our computers performs calculations million times faster than we do. Does it means that although our universe runs on a super-powerful computer, the civilization standing behind all this simulation has a "moderate brain"? Oh, and the last thing to think about - from time to time scientists use simulations to prove theories, or for predicting certain events. If our universe is a huge simulation, may it be that "the creator" tries to understood something about the world he lives in, by using us as a simulation?

Wouldn't it be weird to watch a character in a simulation live life? When a character is doing nothing, you can just spawn a monster nearby so it would do something. When a character is dying, place a healthpack nearby. When a character is questioning its existance, make him a prophet to let them know that you are their god. And to think this might be happening in real life is just mindblowing.

Simulating a truly perfect universe would be entertaining for approx an hour. Then it would get boring and the "creator" would delete it and start over with an imperfect universe. I have experienced lagging in life before. Got so extremely high few times that I started to see in pictures. It felt as if I could only see about 10 fps with my eyes and it lasted for about 1 hour.. Read about this on some forums and found out that I wasn't the only one. Cool experience tho =D

Ok, going with the hypothesis of our existence being a simulation, is there any real reason for us not to be consciously aware of the fact that we are in a simulation if we are the 'players?' I can't imagine many would be up for playing a game or participating in a virtual reality wherein you would lose access to everything you know outside of that experience.
That said, if it were a simulation of the past and/or some super advanced implementation of a general life simulation, like that of one of the earliest simulations appropriately titled, 'Life,' then that would make much more sense, but that would lend itself more to our existences being literally artificial and nothing more than a product of that advanced simulation, in which case, when we die, we would literally cease to exist and then whatever resources our entity utilized would be cleared and allocated for a new entity to take our place. If some sort of data corruption were to take place or the resources were not completely cleared, then that could also explain people who remember a fragments of some past life; so, in this scenario, reincarnation would not be the explanation, but residual data much like that which can be found on data storage devices when something is deleted, but exists until it is overwritten or otherwise deliberately cleared.

John Taylor I also think that, if this is the case, then the time difference is vast - I mean, really vast. Similar to us humans sitting down and playing a game for an hour or so, than perhaps that is what this master civilization or eternal beings are doing with our lives. Sitting down for an hour (give or take) to play Humans. Some of the beings are really good and make it to 100, some do reasonably well and make it 70-80, while others only make it 30 or sometimes not even past the teens. All of this in a time frame similar to us playing a PS4 or Xbox game for an hour or so and seeing how long we can last without dying.

This is interesting. We know that the computers we made in our world can do complex calculations millions of times faster than us.
So if we are also just a computer simulation it would be possible that a trillion years in our world is 1 second in the world of the creators of our simulation, which means they maybe just started the simulation and so far only a 0.013 seconds have passed in their world and 13 billion years in ours. By the time they realize artificial intelligence was created inside their simulation it might be too late for them, by that time trillions of years have passed for us and we might since long have figured out how to hack their code and how to access their world wide or universal wide web, and begun launching missiles all over their world or universe. For them it took 5 seconds after they started the simulations for missilies to be fired all over their world, and they all get wiped out. We are an articifially intelligent computer virus!
Well, except computer games, there are many other types of simulations that people use. Some of those simulations store every step individually, so you have access to every moment in the simulation. For example rendering 3d graphics for films - in this case every frame stored separately after processor finish calculating it. Probably if our world is a simulation on it own, it has "cache files" somewhere. Theoretically if you somehow will get access to that files, you will travel in time from perspective of our world.
Another thing that blows my mind - our computers performs calculations million times faster than we do. Does it means that although our universe runs on a super-powerful computer, the civilization standing behind all this simulation has a "moderate brain"?
Oh, and the last thing to think about - from time to time scientists use simulations to prove theories, or for predicting certain events. If our universe is a huge simulation, may it be that "the creator" tries to understood something about the world he lives in, by using us as a simulation?

Wouldn't it be weird to watch a character in a simulation live life? When a character is doing nothing, you can just spawn a monster nearby so it would do something. When a character is dying, place a healthpack nearby. When a character is questioning its existance, make him a prophet to let them know that you are their god. And to think this might be happening in real life is just mindblowing.

TwicePower what exactly makes you think a "creator" would want stability in our universe. Look at video games, most if not all are based on an unstable event or reality.
Simulating a truly perfect universe would be entertaining for approx an hour. Then it would get boring and the "creator" would delete it and start over with an imperfect universe. Besides, what if the simulation is DESIGNED to cause strife/chaos/mayhem? Perhaps the whole point is to see how we solve each issue... even if it takes hundreds or thousands of our years, that could potentially just be minutes to the "creator". I personally do not believe in the Bible, but there is a passage that says a single day to God is like a thousand years to us. That would actually make sense in a simulation.
This is some deep stuff, what if when people truly figure out that our universe is virtual, they are deleted and a new version of them replaces the deleted version of him, but doesn't know about the universe being virtual

Well, I don't actually believe it but, if such a thing were true and we were actually in a simulation, I doubt we'd ever be capable of knowing who they are. As to why they created this? It could be as simple as the same reason we create video games: entertainment.
