I choose to believe Kokichi is so good at lying that he just naturally can sense it when others do it. And honestly Kaito mimics it so well I second-guessed who was in the Exisal the first time it came up.

I love how you can literally lie and it allows you to experience a little new side-story inside the cases. It's used sparingly but it's pretty interesting. Bet Kokichi is proud of Shuichi using lies to reach justice.
Fun fact: Tsumugi rarely argues any actual points. When she does it’s mostly to get people back on track, otherwise it’s references and meaningless garbage. Other characters do debates and argue over the truth, while Tsumugi just kinda quietly stands there. She doesn’t do major debates, mostly just commenting “oh what a mystery” or making a one off comment.
Im pretty sure that it was supposed to be the same bullet, but without lying, used on one of Kirumi's next statements: 'That could have been done by anyone'

prior to trial 4, i love how kokichi tends to notice the lie but rather than calling shuichi out on it, like in trial 1 with kaede, he usually stays silent, supports, or helps with shuichi's argument . it says a lot about the theme truth and lies and kokichi's nonverbal interest of shuichi
It is a shame a lot of the back routes are useless or unneeded, some of the dialogue is good, especially case 3's first back route. Gonta and Miu's dialogue and then Keebo having a nervous "breakdown" (by apologizing and then suddenly turning on his light...TWICE) about lying is just gold.
@maciejl20 so you're saying they should make it so you can present things incorrectly and get different dialogue then at the end lose? wouldnt that make it so you would have to restart a class trail if you mess up adding tons of hours of repeating dialogue
@maciejl20 Its a cool concept but this game is literally a visual novel, by adding all these branching paths they would need to add hundreds of new voicelines and it would overall really bloat the game. i'm sure your idea could work in a different tye of gsme but not in danganronpa
@Celes thats a good concept but...you'd still have to overcome the many new voicelines and branching paths+outcomes that'd come with this concept, and thats just too much writing and work. and yes the "Makoto's imaginary bad ending" in D1 is a good example, but that was more smallerscale+easier to do compared to something as complex as having the players actions choose who basically lives or dies. (But seeing the unused execution concepts used and animated for this would've been really nice though...) (tbh they can only pull this off in V3 and D2, def not D1 as that would affect future media unless they put a "canon route", which theoretically would make this concept pointless.)

If you're saying you want routes where you can go "I want this character to live so I'm gonna go with the route where this character lives!", then nah, I'm good. But if you're talking like YTTD where some characters will die no matter what, some characters you get to choose but even if you like a character over another you can find merit in letting that character die, then yeah, now we're talking.
Even if he did, literally everyone will trust the Ultimate Detective over Kokichi, a known liar. Calling out Shuichi's lie would just make people more inclined to believe Shuichi

I think it's cool how Perjury relies on just two components: the inversion of an existing Truth Bullet, and whether that statement makes sense in a vacuum. Like, it doesn't matter that what you're arguing is obviously wrong from your perspective -- if it's plausible it's valid. It's a delightful mechanic and a great narrative tool.
It's been almost 4 years since I've first watched DRV3, and recently I just started to watch DR again for remembering sake, and I completely forgot that "back route" was an option. This video's really great, since I probably would've never thought of it by myself.
I wasn’t paying full attention while watching so when it transitioned from the first trail 2 back route to the second I was like holy crap that one saves so much time
It's interesting to see how few some people got in these comments. If I had to guess how these back routes were implemented, I'd say the writers already had the trial mapped out and then added in the back routes later.

Technically you missed one *SPOILERS* In the 6th trial, during the last nonstop debate in the game, instead of just hitting none of the argue or agree points and letting time run out, you can turn the one truth bullet “continue the game” into a lie bullet “stop the game” and fire it at any of the points, it pretty much gives the same result
I wasn't aware this one even existed. However, for getting the achievement/trophies associated with the back routes, only the ones in the video are required.
I wish that first one had been part of the main part of the game. It’s a great use of perjury, and it has a great moment with Kaede. And it’s a great moment for Shuichi, too!
The back routes are such missed potential. Whenever we get a new Danganronpa game I hope we have actual branching routes and choices that matter... you know, like Zero Escape.
@@ShikuQuaza I agree with this mainly because I think Uchikoshi writes better main characters. The only times Kodaka excelled at his main heroes is with Komaru and Toko in UDG. Kodaka can write great side characters and I think his villains in Junko, Nagito, and Tsumugi are better written than the Zero Escape Antagonists, however I think the antagonist of AI: The Somnium can stand with them as a great Antagonist. I will say that Kodaka was at his best when he was using Uchikoshi's tropes (DR2), and Uchikoshi was at his worst when he was forced to make his game more like DR to be successful (VLR).
They play off each other very well. While I love Danganronpa, I do think Zero Escape overall is a better series. But I agree that the villains in Danganronpa have a greater presence overall and that kinda fits Kodaka's relatively realistic settings. But the games are pretty different overall, the branching paths fit in Zero Escape because that's the whole point of the plot. Even in AI, where they weren't as necessary, they still felt really good because the branching paths helped flesh out side characters and add more to the overall mystery. For Danganronpa, I wonder if it would feel out of place if each trial had multiple endings that affected which characters got to stick around longer and whatnot. I'm welcome to that idea, but I'd have to see it in true practice rather than the limp attempts given with the back routes in DRV3.
@@SideBySidePlays The main problem with that extent of branching paths is that if choices actually decided which characters lived or died, it would mean too much writing. Even if each of the 6 trials only had 2 outcomes, they’d need to manage 64 different paths. Even though you could collapse some of them into each other or reuse scenes, that still means at least 10x the work to make the writing the same quality as it currently is. Not to mention they’d have to rewrite each trial around (16 choose (# alive characters) ) times.
I did that in the second case. SPOILER WARNING FOR V3-2. ... I could not for the life of me figure out how to pin Kirumi, so I tried lying about the fact that I heard her return to the dorms. I knew that with earlier lie of Kaito and Shuichi hearing Maki this one would also work. I never expected this to be a back-route. It felt great!
They are pretty easy to miss, and there's a pretty inconsistent amount of them (trials 2 through 5 have two each, but trial 1 has one and trial 6 has zero).
I probably missed it but there also is one about Tenko not committing suicide because she'd have died immediately despite Maki saying otherwise. Unless you're forced to go through that route???

Thinking about "Flashlight Drawbacks" now, of course Keebo was gonna get thrown way the fuck off over the ultimate detective randomly lying for the players' sake.

@@morax1554 She genuinely has one of the best character arcs in the series. Added with the free time events and the twist that all the characters from V3 had their personalities created for them, Himiko arguably has the strongest character of everyone in V3

I could not for the life of me figure out how to pin Kirumi, so I tried lying about the fact that I heard her return to the dorms. I knew that with earlier lie of Kaito and Shuichi hearing Maki this one would also work. I never expected this to be a back-route. It felt great!

They are pretty easy to miss, and there's a pretty inconsistent amount of them (trials 2 through 5 have two each, but trial 1 has one and trial 6 has zero).
I had no idea there were this many back routes. I never knew you can lie in trial 1, the second lie of trial 2, and that you can lie in trial 5.
@maciejl20 True. But it gives you access to some great hidden scenes. And just by concept, it's pretty neat you can reach the answer with other ways.
The only one of these I used was the second route for Trial 2, I guess because I was discombobulated from Kirumi suddenly being the prime suspect.
I probably missed it but there also is one about Tenko not committing suicide because she'd have died immediately despite Maki saying otherwise. Unless you're forced to go through that route???

@@morax1554 She genuinely has one of the best character arcs in the series. Added with the free time events and the twist that all the characters from V3 had their personalities created for them, Himiko arguably has the strongest character of everyone in V3

To be fair Yasohiro was pretty useless in the first game and he's a fan favorite now. Sometimes people just like the ones who are along for the ride.
