Good advice! As a project management professional I can say that all of this checks out. I've been in each role that was mentioned and yes the heat is on as you move up. Nowadays I am still in project management but as a Scrum Master. Keep up the good work.

I have a question for you Bengy, do you prefer the role of a project manager of a scrum master, and why ?
I prefer being a Scrum Master. However, having been a project manager has really helped me become a good Scrum Master in my opinion. I think that though not mandatory it is beneficial to either first hold a project coordinator role or project manager role before becoming a Scrum Master. In my experience project management skills will elevate a Scrum Master plus they two roles have a fine line the separates them from each other. Furthermore, Scrum Master role are not entry level roles though some might believe differently. A project manager role has a clearly defined way of working and you could follow a step by step guide to do you job. There is even a fully detail career path for project managers. Scrum Master roles are a bit different in that sure in the beginning you have direction how ever when you get to a certain point there is not direction and you have to figure out what you want to do. Also there is no true career path for a scrum master like there is for a project manager. The reason I like the Scrum Master role is because of the flexibility and endless possibilities for career growth. As a Scrum Master I communicate with various group within my organization of all levels on the behalf of my team.
Just became a project coordinator and i am so excited, my goal is to move up to PM in 3-6 months with my google cert :))))))

Fantastic Video! I have been in the PM field since 1999. I can say honestly it is a very challenging industry but as you’ve stated it takes skill to become successful. Your explanation was spot on and I am sure many are going to benefit from this video. I have found that knowledge and experience are helpful, however, certifications seem to have made my ascent to Sr. PM then Program Manager (PM of PMs) even easier. In construction the project manager is behind the scene the foreman and lead guy are the ones that will be held accountable along with pm if job fales it’s important for lead guys to place workers in area where they fit best

Promoted to PM this year after being in clinic management for almost 2-years within the company on the field. Let me tell you, now the stakeholders and senior leadership look towards me for new ideas, decisions, and so forth in this role. The pressure is on 😅 Now, I’m learning to increase my organizational skills, time management, and prioritizing tasks. Left and right, new ideas and feedback are being thrown at me but I have to know that I don’t have to drop what I’m currently working on for someone else all the time. The autonomy is here and no micromanagement so you truly do have to take action, bring ideas, and results! Leadership + management.
Love it and this sounds spot on to me. This is also my experience of being a pm. It is a step up: I hope you excel in your new role !

Hey! I think that’s very individualistic, there’s no one rule. I guess, personally being able to tell if ppl are getting annoyed by what you are asking. If you explain your position most times people will be willing to help

Nice one, good info and clear. A lot of company nowadays tries to have a hybrid PM that does everything with the title of PM. Encountered a department that does solely as PM role only sadly gonna get scale down as more and more business division hire their own hybrid PM that also does BA, Product, tester, production handler post project completion. Constant change of environment, being a project manager now is tough with more and more grey area expectation.

Thank you so much for your videos! I have learned so much from watching. I was able to secure a position as a Project Coordinator without prior experience in PM. Imposter Syndrome got the best of me, and I was unable to negotiate my salary once I got the offer. I was really bummed afterward for not trying. Can you please make a video of how to become a better negotiator?
First of all! Congratulations !!!!!!! This is amazing ! You’ve got your foot in the door, and it’s only upwards from here x salary increases will come, and if they don’t come in your current workplace, I say you search around. Someone will recognise your value! Don’t be too discouraged about the start salary. If I’m honest, I also am terrible with negotiation. And it’s very poor to say the least. I know everything to do, but tbh just haven’t negotiated cos I was cool with the salary. It’s a slave mentality and we must stop 😅 I don’t think I’m qualified to do a video on it. But maybe some things about what I’ve learned about negotiation. Shall do that sometime :)

All roles do not require a degree or PM certification as experiences are often considered more even when certification is asked for. Salaries in the UK have not changed I see, always on the lower end. Here in Canada, sometimes the title Project Coordinator depending on industry, refers to the PM. These titles are often used by Local Government (Municipalities/Provinces)
Here in Canada, specifically Toronto. As one whos worked various PC roles within the construction and infrastructure industry. Pay is good in both industries, just have to find the right employer. Secondly, a PMP certificate gives you more leverage when negotiating salary, as well gives you more versatility to work in different industries within project management if you decide to work in a different sector. A degree or certificate is not required but if you are smart enough to use it as leverage when discussing pay it can be a great tool to have in the holster.

Like you said, while certifications are helpful and do prove being able to follow-through, demonstrating and living those soft skills in the day-to-day, like critical thinking, communication and problem-solving, are just as important! Thanks so much for these videos on PM. I’m currently looking for a career change and am looking into PM. I think a Project Coordinator support role fits me better. I have so many of these skills. I am also looking at Scrum Master. How is this position different from a PM?
Hey there ! You’re welcome! So scrum is a specific way of delivering a project. So i scrum master has a specific role within that framework, similar to a pm buy I think they do less of the a action. If I’m honest I’m not that clued up on scrum , so I would do some research on some other channel too

You are welcome lovely :) ! So I would say tech and construction from what I’ve seen, as they are high demand and high value projects in those areas . So yeah, but once again you’ve got to be interested in those kind of projects, or trust me the money will never feel like enough 😫

Hey thank you ! basically the same, a programme is just a group of projects together. So the coordination will be done at a larger scale with programme coordination

Hey you are welcome ☺️ and congrats on your interview. So would need more info, cos I guess it depends on the job description. They may ask you to prioritise tasks, template minutes, create a high level gant, create a raid. Honestly it could be anything. But those are the ones that come to my mind first

Hey ! Funny you should ask about this. I’m just about to record a video on types of entry level roles
So PMO is a side of project management , mainly responsible for the governance, admin and control. So a entry level role within PMO could be a project office coordinator. But this is not a delivery role. It is a good way to get exposure to projects however. Less hands on delivery than project coordinator. It does help to get your foot in the door though
I'm currently a senior engineer in the nuclear industry doing the role as a PC as a stretch assignment at work for a very difficult project and I am doing a good job so far. It was recommended that I obtain my PMP certification and develop more project management skills in the future. Seriously considering a department change but its so scary to make that change!
Hey love that :) I say If you wonna make the move do it! All change is scary, but you’re already getting pm experience in your current role. That’s what will help you in your next department . In regards to the PMP, go for it if that’s what’s been advised I guess. Some industries require it for promotions and growth opportunities more than others :)

I’m trying to pivoting into project management from government administration and I’m having such a hard time. I would appreciate any advice or any a video on this topic. I’ve updated my resume the best I can to highlight different achievements and accomplishments I’ve made in my varies roles I’ve held versus stating my responsibilities. I’ve been actively applying for project coordinator roles and haven’t heard anything back as of yet.

@@pricilasanabria1882 I completely understand. It was tight for me as well. We both know if you remain in the Administration field you in their for good. And I was determine for get out. Maybe have your revamp done around holiday bonuses or tax return season. I even did a 1:1 with the resume professional. She helped me figure out the best roles for me to transition into. As long as you keep the desire to transition into the PM field. It will come true. Just trust your process.

Hey girly. It’s just up you. Program management and project management are 2 different things. I’ll try to do a video on it before the end of the year, but really no promises as a girl is busy. Would just suggest doing a quick Google search on the differences in the mean time. Interesting you got a program manager role straight away though. Ppl don’t usually get that if they haven’t delivered projects before. Some organisations say program management when they really mean project management so Just really look at the JD.

Project controls mainly focuses on cost and scheduling/time management aspects of projects.
Is an Assistant project manager role a good entry role for someone who is study to be a PM, has coordinator experience outside of project management and has experience taking on mini team projects delivering but with no budget?

Depends on the size of the project. Can’t really answer that question unfortunately. Also not everyone has the same skill set and capacity

The money will come with experience. Also a bit of advice do not stay at one company for too long if you want large salary increases. Roughly 3 to 5 years then you want to jump to the next company unless you land in a company that you really like. I see that your at 2.5 years of experience, I would suggest that you get yourself a PMI cert if you do not have one. If you lead projects that can count the experience towards your PMP (note you do not need to have a PM job title to sit for the PMP). If you do not have the experience in leading projects get the CAPM. That was the cert I started with and eventually got my PMP and some other mentionable PM certs. Your in telecom so you will make some big bucks once you become a PM.

Hey. Nope. In the Uk it’s not that big. But I plan to do it next year if my company will sponsor me (just because) otherwise i personally won’t do it as I have other more recognised certs under my belt already (UK). US may be different

My thoughts in what regard ?
@@pitolinmotion I guess, the difference in the responsibilities and salary for the roles. I feel like there's a significant overlap and it's sometimes hard to distinguish between where they sit on the hierarchy. This kind of links further into uncertainty on what you need to apply for them, what is expected in those roles, and what kind of time in takes to progress from one step to the next. My example is that I've seen people in PC roles for 3-4 years and that jump to PM seems to be an extremely difficult to make.
@@Tony-11111 got yah well that’s like a few videos in itself really, I always say if you can get a pm role to start. Do it, even at a trainee level. Some ppl like to stay as a coordinator for life, so transitioning to a pm isn’t a must, everyone’s journey is different. But it can be hard to move from pc to pm, in the same way it’s hard to move straight into pm. Everything is hard lol, but those that deliver will move up
Also yes there is overlap in the roles also, I would be more concerned in the job description then title

I'm a recent grad with a degree in B.S Mech Eng Tech here in the US & I've been applying to a lot of entry level project coordinator & associate project manager roles & it's so hard. I did an interview for an entry level clinical project coordinator role & I didn't get it😔🥺 Idk what I did wrong, I thought my interview w/them went good & I answered all their questions. how can I get qualified for that? And the only "PM" experience I have is taking a PM class for a semester, would that qualify as an experience?

Hey!!! So I only really do those kinda tips and tricks and interview prep as part of my consulting services. The truth is advice is really only helpful on an individual basis on things like this . I do empathise with you . Getting into PM is very hard these days, but worth it so keep going: did you ask for feedback ?

Automated email 🧐😯 well that’s a bit rude of them. Was it an video interview or an actually f2f or video interview. I would try to find the hr or recruitment email address. If you don’t get feedback you’ll never know where you went wrong and you’ll just be doing the same wrong thing over and over again. It’s also possible that you did nothing technically wrong and they just didn’t enjoy something about the vibe, or another person just had skills closer to what they wanted too
I will say certain industries are bit more focused on degrees. I work in the engineering/construction industry. 90% of our PMs are engineers. The rest have science or business degrees, but at least a bachelors degree. 😭
Would agree with you in terms of it depends on industry. Where the industry requires technical knowledge and safety such as construction, A degree may be required. But it also depends what kinda Pm you are. I know so many PMs that don’t have degrees so , I guess not all pm roles are appropriate for someone with no degree. But some are :) would disagree with that stat though. Where I’ve worked hardly any PMs are engineers. Maybe it depends what industry

Geez. The UK really underpays their people. Here the average pay for a Project coordinator is about 45-$60k and a PM is 70k-150k.
I wouldn’t say ‘underpays’. Its actually quite comparable. Remember You can’t compare uk and US like for like. There’s many things to consider. 1) It’s proportional to the cost of living. 2) healthcare and other things are already paid for via taxes in uk ( healthcare is free) so generally we get more net income when those things are excluded. 3) Also remember this is £ vs $ . £60k is roughly $75k average on salary in uk is &60k according to reed.com …changed to US showed the average PM salary in the US as $90k. Don’t get caught out! ;) also these are starting salary ranges

Dies? I guess there is a number of reasons why projects end, but generally If you are a prem employee, no, you’ll just be moved onto another project. If you are a contractor, most likely unless they have another project specifically for you
