  • Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will step down from office a month from now, in what has been a widely anticipated leadership succession. Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who was earlier appointed the leader of the fourth-generation political team, will take over. A Prime Minister's Office statement said Mr Wong, who is also finance minister, has the unanimous support of MPs from the ruling People's Action Party. Mr Wong will be sworn in at 8pm on May 15 at the Istana. Mr Wong said he accepts this new responsibility with humility and a deep sense of duty.

    To bring happiness and joy to the people is not just by economic progress where the wealth goes to the smaller percentage of the population or even foreigners.
    Go down to the ground levels ...to understand their grievance, their fears , their expectations, and the feelings for a better future ...
    It is the majority feeling of what a better future that counts ...that is the strength of the nation ..not the purchase of weapons and the owning of war planes and war ships ..Singapore is too small to fight any one and even to defend itself ..ONLY BY HAVING FRIENDLY NEIGHBOURS AND A CONTENTED population...only then can Singapore be safe and prosper.

    I think LHL's decision to step down on 15/5/24 was taken quite suddenly. Recently a new Returning Officer was announced; then there was news of GE training for a bunch of civil servants. This would hv meant that LHL would call an election quite soon with him also standing................BUT now I'm not sure as to whether LHL would quit politics altogether. I believe that the next GE would take place months later, instead of soon as I'd originally expected. Each person is of course entitled to his own view.

    As a safeguard for Singapore, let's hope Mr Lee will hold on to the position of PAP Secretary General until the dust has settled. The reason is PAP is likely to have a major setback in the next GE. The issues for the voters are:
    1. The high inflation that has made many Singaporeans much poorer;
    2. Iswaran's corruption case;
    3. Ridout rental cases; 4. Tan China Jin's case, and most importantly,
    5. Lawrence Wong has little traction with Singaporeans. (Not many voters know what Lawrence Wong stands for, and many don't see him capable of being an effective PM.)
    After the GE, Lawrence Wong may well have to step down or become a lame duck PM. If Lee Hsien Loong is still PAP Secretary General, he can work with President Tharman to identify a suitable replacement. Mr Lee owes it to Singapore and to the legacy of his father to ensure that all is well in the rough waters ahead.

    CONGRATULATIONS. Mr Lawrence Wong. Another chapter for Singapore and a challenging one in deed. Gearing Singapore under current situation in Singapore and the instability around the world is going to require the right decisions for the good welfare of the people. There are always solution to a problem but deciding this solution will need the input as many parties as possible, try not to rely on one side viewpoint but from the opposition and the people on the ground. Unity is essential ingredients and not pride, during this journey before the world stabilize sufficiently. Our best wishes to you in your new appointment.

    You've heard of Lee Kuan Yew as an exceptionally bright fellow - who could make great things happen - in tiny Singapore which had a population of only 3 million. What is usually overlooked is that he is ethnic Chinese which really explains his capacity for achievements. Hypothetically, if 3 million Chinese in Singapore produced a Lee Kuan Yew, how many Lee Kuan Yews can China produce with 1.4 billion once conditions are ripe? And this is just pretending that a Lee Kuan Yew is the pinnacle of what the Chinese people can show to the world! I believe China will produce countless towering figures far surpassing a so-called "legendary" Lee Kuan Yew. In truth, Lee Kuan Yew has really always been over-rated!

      Instead, they have one Xi Jin Ping, who is so hellbent on bringing an open, modern China back into its dark ages of the Cultural Revolution. That is their current pinnacle, probabilities notwithstanding.

      You don't sound unhinged or ignorant at all /s
      China has no claim over any of the accolades that any Singaporean Chinese achieved with their own efforts. That's like saying the all awards won by Christians belong to the Vatican, or that the UK "produced" Bernie Sanders. Both are equally moronic and inane sentiments as yours. What LKY achieved was through his own efforts and situations encountered during his time, and he is his own person. People like you who attach race to everything are why so many people remain ignorant and hold dated views.
      The China government tried to copy his methods and failed spectacularly, which never fails to make me laugh, because who'd have thought that governing a small city-state would be that much different than a huge country with 1.4 billion people? Instead of "producing" people to try to surpass a long-dead benevolent dictator, China should stop trying to emulate the Singapore Model and just focus on recovering its growth rate.

    I urge every Singaporeans to really think this through. If you want change, don't vote for this man. If you want the ability to make your own choices, don't vote for PAP. Every Singaporeans deserves to have their own LIBERTY and if you really want the country to change for the better, vote for someone else. Here are the list of things that most Singaporeans want to but not the PAP.
    - The choice to not contribute 20% of CPF
    - Reduce the mandatory military duration to 6 Months
    - Make the housing prices more affordable
    - Allow LGBTQ individuals to have more freedom
    - Reduce GST rate
    - Enforce a Minimum wage of $13
    - Removing the PSLE examination
    - Make more Investments for Singaporeans in areas such as sports, arts, entrepreneurships and tourism
    - Increase the maternity leave to 9 months
    - Implement free Health care for Singaporeans based on their income
    - Reduce the voting age to 18
    - Ban the sale of Cigarettes
    - Build an artificial island to increase the country's space
    The PAP are not gonna do any of this and change is not gonna happen if you continue voting for them. I don't know if the opposition parties will do any of this. I really don't. But I would rather give them a chance to prove themselves and I suggest all of you do the same.

      @@damienlee927 Well, it's the government's job to make our lives better. To produce a good image of Singapore. The PAP is simply not doing either...
      For me personally I doubt there'll be any heavy repercussions if it's done the right way, for the right reasons. Just think about it...
      By implementing the points above, our Democracy, Happiness, Economy, and liveability rankings will improve.
      I believe you would want all of the points to come true.
      If you want change, don't Vote for the PAP.

    SG is successful primarily due to our ethnic Chinese majority. Because of geopolitical realities, SG is fond of placing vocal Indian leaders on the frontline to mask our majority ethnic Chinese composition. But when the real crunch comes e.g. Covid pandemic, who do we fall back on? Only the really capable and trustworthy ones step up to the plate like Lawrence Wong, Ong Ye Kung, Chan Chun Sing etc.
    On the other hand, consider a hypothetical leadership comprising only the likes of Tharman, Iswaran, Vivian Balakrishnan, Janil Puthucherry, Shanmugam, Pritam Singh. What happens? In a period of crisis or even in peaceful times, I believe SG collapses irreversibly in 2 weeks' time!
