I’m an afternoon tea person too and that looked like a fabulous afternoon tea. I once had afternoon tea at Lady Mendls in Gramercy Park, NYC and the food was tiny. One of my friends caught the waiter crouching down behind a piece of furniture stuffing his face with sandwiches. Meanwhile he took her food away before she had even finished 🤣. My other friend with us and I really enjoyed ourselves and we would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes an afternoon tea.

Oh.My.Goodness.! That was stunning! When you come back and explore Vancouver, you must take the ferry over to Victoria and have afternoon tea at the Empress Hotel. It was built during the reign of Queen Victoria. Also stunning! Please do rate the Canadian/British pub. Would be a great video!

I really like the Empress, but wish they had not gotten rid of the Bengal Room. So sad. By the way, the Empress was built during the reign of Edward VII; Victoria was gone by that time.

I'm so pleased you chose the Shangri-la afternoon tea! I normally to to the old Windsor Arms Hotel, or The Old Mill, or even The Royal York or King Edward Hotel. The Old Mill is the oldest tearoom in the city, having opened in 1914, and in the site of an old mill dating back to the late 1700's. The Windsor Arms is very proper and traditional, and has an incredible selection of teas and you can sit by the marble fireplace where Richard Burton proposed for the second time to Liz Taylor! Terribly romantic! But the Shangri la treats look divine. A proper posh Afternoon Tea here also has the advantage of being cheaper than London , at up to $85 Cdn (£50) compared to £85, which I like! By the way, they restored the old Bishop's Block building to house the Soho House. It was the last house left from a row of 1829 brick townhouses in the old town of York (which was the original name of Toronto).

I've had afternoon tea in Toronto, Vancouver, and Victoria. I can't speak to their authenticity, as I've never been to the UK, but I can say it was lovely in all three cities, and certainly better than any I've had in the US. I think my favourite was at the Empress Hotel in Victoria on Vancouver Island. On your next trip to Canada, or if you spend a week in Seattle (it's two and half hours each way on the Victoria Clipper catamaran), stay at the Empress over a weekend. I believe it is a Fairmont property now. I would recommend booking a suite. It's about £300 per night for the standard suite (they have more expensive luxury suites), but they occasionally have some great weekend packages. It's very bougie and a bit of a luxury, but perhaps Brits try luxury hotel and spa at the Fairmont Empress Hotel would be a good video. There is a gym and a spa. The Royal London Wax Museum is a five minute walk. Craigdarroch Castle is 2 km from the hotel. Walkable but it is uphill to the castle. It has an interesting history. There's some great shopping on Government Street and in the LoJo district. If you decide you want to go, just reach out. I'd be happy to help you plan an itinerary. Some great vlogging opportunities. LOL (I should work for the Victoria Tourism Board)

As many times as I've been to Victoria, I've never had tea at the Empress. I always go to Murchie's. I guess it's on my to-do for my next trip to Victoria!! (Once it's easier to go in and out of BC. I miss it up there so much!! I hear Whistler whistling for me and I can't go! 😭). Soon!! 👍😉

    • @dr.westwood
      @dr.westwood 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@annaburch3200 Murchie’s used to be the exclusive vendor for afternoon tea at the Empress. They had some financial troubles in the late 2000s and went into receivership so the Empress has a new vendor, but their Afternoon Tea blend is the same blend they used at the Empress.

@@dr.westwood yes. 😉👍 That's why we went there to buy tea. Same tea, cheaper food. Not quite the same ambiance, however. I think I still have a box of tea from the Queen's Golden Jubilee. Probably no good to drink, but still fun to have. 😊

She was also, quite separately, the Queen of Canada, the Queen of Australia, and the Queen of New Zealand, as well! So if for some bizarre reason Charles ceased to be King in the UK, he would still have the title in these other countries.

You two are so close and yet so far! I am just on the south side of the lake from Toronto!! It is possible they may have an American flag here and there. My city has the occasional Canadian flag flying because we are so close. We also sometimes get their change mixed up with our own and just use it like regular.

In Michigan we always have plenty of Canadian coins mixed in with ours, and use it like regular, except it won't work in vending machines and stuff like that.
Once, I went to Arkansas and gave a store clerk a Canadian coin without thinking and she FREAKED OUT like I was some kind of counterfeiter or something.
It was a nickle, I think. What a criminal!

Regarding tea, the beverage, Canadians generally do it right. Tim Hortons is actually a good spot to get a decent hot tea, if you want to save some of those tea bags for your time in the US.

Not macaroon. Macaron. The blue item was a macaron. What gives it away is the shape and that it's like a little sandwich. No coconut either.

    Don’t Shangri-La do a fabulous Afternoon Tea?!
When I was in Singapore about ten years ago, before we got there, Mum told me that we just HAD to do Afternoon Tea at the Sheridan -& I’m so glad we did, because like Joel said about Toronto, it was DIVINE!! Really enjoying your Canadian visit, I’m Australian and I’ve only been to the breathtaking Niagara Falls in Canada, nowhere else, but my Dad’s favourite city is Vancouver, so I might go there one day. Are you going there? Love your Vlogs! Enjoy Canada!! (Actually, is it more English, more American or more French?) Kirstey xx

Old Spaghetti Factory is great; had my first date there with my (now) husband. Very kitschy.
For a unique experience, you have to try Dim Sum, in China Town. Rol San is authentic, per my Macanese relatives, and is on Spadina, just north of Dundas, so it’s a perfect location to combine with Kensington Market. You can’t really say you’ve “done Toronto” if you haven’t walked through Kensington. It’s a unique area, lots of street art, one-off little shops, totally walkable. And speaking of street art, after Kensington Market, head south to Graffiti Alley (just south west of Queen St East and Spadina). It’s extremely popular for photos and captures the real urban vibe of Toronto, outside of the (in my opinion, rather boring) super touristy places you’ve gone. I heard Eaton Centre & cringed. As a local, I avoid that place whenever possible.
