Jack, a commonly untouched topic for these "eco-friendly" transit machines is the length of service an owner can expect to enjoy from the solar panels before they reach end-of -life status. Now, I've heard the best the solar panel manufacturers can offer is a 10-year life span before replacement is necessary. There is no option for rehabilitation. Once end-of-life is achieved, the panels are subject to burial since they also cannot be recycled (very much like windmill blades). So, how long can an owner expect to use this boat before a major replacement project would be necessary? ..... . ______________________________________
The personally love the hybrid idea in cruising catamarans. Harvesting of solar power on all boats has come of age and great to see. Another great tour, Jack.
Thanks Jack for your time onboard, it was great to have you and you've done a great job with the review. I see there are a couple questions in the comments that I'm happy to clear up. There are two 130kW electric motors which can deliver an incredible about of direct thrust all while not running through a gearbox where power can be lost. These ECO boats have more than enough power to push through any currents or climatic weather. Range - this is a tough one, because it depends on so many things. On anchor, you can run the vessel on battery alone for up to 3 days (with aircon) before having to charge up again which would usually take around 1.5-2 hrs. If you keep your passages within the battery run time and only recharge when anchored, with 10k liters, we worked it out to 2 years without refueling. Keeping in mind this purely based off calculations and real world factors could affect those calculations. Battery bank size and generator selection will affect this. While underway, the consumption is less than a conventional vessel as the generators have less resistance creating the needed power to charge the batteries than having to turn gears and props. However, it depends a lot on your conditions. If you can keep your power consumption below 60kW (equivalent to one generator running to produce 60kW), that's 30kW each electric motor, your consumption rate is effectively halved, and range doubled and your power consumption is more or less balanced with power production. Hence, my comment, this boat can be thirsty if not run correctly.
That was a really poor walkthrough. You missed 3 guest rooms. Missed the 2 crew cabins. You chopped from one side to other. A confusing mess. Your reviews/walkthroughs are getting worse and worse.
@@Yachtbuyer We are currently 4 days out from the Antigua. She's done amazingly well and we've have had very good weather. We left from Canary Islands 10 days ago and still have just under half a tank on each side.

I like the idea. I'd change the layout a bit to allow for more solar. So the upper canopy wouldn't have the tinted skylights. I'd make it solid and covered with panels. Add some more battery storage too. I'd also allow for more fuel. Another 200 to 300 gallons just to be on the safe side. Especially if crossing the oceans. I think 8 knots is the perfect speed for one of these beasts. I might even be temped to cruise it at 5 knots and add a week or so to a scheduled trip. Nice and relaxing. Putt-Putt around the Caribbean.
Thank you for the compliment. Agreed, a boat show isn’t the best place to get beneath the skin of a boat like this. Hopefully Sunreef sees this and we can organise a in-depth trial to see what it’s like to live with - Jack

As soon as I saw the wheel on the flybridge I thought it looked like it was a bolt on afterthought. You'd expect to see something like that on a child's toy. The rest of the boat was lovely. I saw a Sunreef 70 docking in Ios 2 years ago and it looked both beautiful and massive. Not quite as big as the Sunseeker 131 the following day but still a sight to behold.
What a superb, nice and very thoughtful feature! When he pointed out that the bedroom had “nice and flat floors” I was taken a back! Not very many boat manufacturers pay that much attention to detail! Majority of boats have curvy or wavy or dippidy floors, but I love how they took that extra step to make them nice and flat floors and that’s such an amazing level of detail and it was at this very moment I was completely sold and I am setting up purchase immediately. I can’t wait, I mean, just wow! Simply amazing! I can not wait to walk around in that bedroom, with just socks on.

It is refreshing to hear a realistic presentation. Silent Yachts has been presenting a huge lie about a nearly unlimited range. Meanwhile every TH-cam video showing life about they have an excuse about why “this time” they need the generator traveling a few hours below listed cruise speed. Hearing use of the generator a couple hours every few days sounds more realistic. And using the generator for more than a short hop is reasonable. But please try and get a sea trial. I do like your comparison to a sail boat without the sails.
Really interesting alternative - will keen to hear how the customers who will be actually paying for the boat react. I can imagine the charter companies must be think hard about the quiet ness and the fuel savings
It's awsome. Excellent review! You didn't mention how long it can take to full charge the batteries with pure solar power. Also can you option the yacht with battery bank upgrade?
This idea is really cool. It’s a 5,284 gallons to fill up their diesel engine and it will last the entire season instead of filling up each week of use. Better for the environment and the money can be spent elsewhere on the boat maintenance and improvements. It will be interesting to see how they do crossing the Atlantic. Thanks for showing us this boat.
If you look at this from a cost point of view...You can go a 1000 miles and use very little to no diesel. The cost of fuel per year for some people can make the difference. With this boat, you can go anywhere, no matter where the wind blows, and use no fuel...if you're not in a hurry. It's better than a sailboat or a diesel-powered boat.
If one can afford this boat, one could more than easily afford the cost of diesel fuel to run its equivalent. Two consecutive cloudy days and you are adrift. A thousand mile range on un-recharged batteries alone? That does not get you across ANY ocean. It is a very expensive coastal cruiser toy. Better than a sailboat?? Better than a diesel powered boat?? Better than a sailboat with a diesel engine??????????????????????????????????? No.
I love this. It's the future for boating in general. Thanks to the rich going for solutions like this, it helps push the market development and we get better and better solutions. It will become super exciting once solid-state batteries start entering the market, being lighter and higher capacity, not to mention much much safer.
Nice name Double Happiness. Like eco boats, useful for fuel usage. Her spaces flow one into the other cockpit to the salon to the foredeck exterior. The cabins are comfortable and private. I find the galley and cabins a bit dark not my taste but the shape of the cabins and layout I like. A transatlantic boat interesting she does 5,000 nautical miles. Like the propulsion system Would you take her out for a spin Jack she an endurance boat not one of those high speed boats you enjoy taking out. One other question ❓ ❓ what in your opinion is the best eco boat of any type - not sail boats, your have come across
I would love to give a boat like this a try, I think this type of propulsion system is really interesting. Hopefully Sunreef can make it happen! - Jack
I still don't know why the owner chose not to buy the full package of solar panels like the yacht in the stocks images you showed. If he had done that he could have run the electrical systems indefinitely while at anchor without turning on the generator. He would have also extended his range and fuel efficiency considerably
I like the structure of the vessel and how it is powered. So far as the color and some of the layout, no. The dark colors give it a dungeon atmosphere. The galley is better served on the main deck for better access to the dining areas, especially on the upper deck. By the time you take the plates to the upper deck, you run the risk of the food being cold. But these are just my opinions.
You could probably spend most of a season knocking around the Bahamas and other islands in the Caribbean using less than a quarter tank of fuel, simply hopping from one anchorage to the next. Then spend a day in the sun recharging the battery banks! It's a bit large for my preference, but if I was to get one I think I'd leave the center panel glass (possibly openable) and cover the rest of the flybridge roof with more solar. I KNOW the decor in the hulls would be different! About 2 shades lighter in color for the wood and other wall coverings, it looked like you were exploring a cave.
For an ecoboat. I wish the fly bridge and overall top area available for solar panels should be more. It will allow you to have an even longer range. More batteries in the boat. More asssurance when you have to outrun a storm. Also if you have a longer hard top then you can have less sun bathing on the fly bridge.Which can serve as covered living area. Then i would have galley up and make the below kitchen area a large walkin or series of fridge/freezer/watermaker for those long passages. Also what is the watermaker capacity??? That is very important when you have a full boat
The captain emphasized "power" because there is a Sunreef Eco 60 Sail. Assuming you have good weather (i.e. sunny) and max solar panels installed, can you cruise 24 hours solely on solar without the diesel generators? And if so, what would the cruising speed be?
Jack, "Free" is one of my favorite words in the English language. With more efficient solar panels coming to the market on a daily basis, it's a much better alternative than the high cost of diesel fuel, and in conjunction with substantially less maintenance on electric motors than with a diesel engine, it's a win win for a boats... owner
These solar cats only make sense with solar fully maxed out (ditch sunroof) fuel capacity absolutely minimised, electrical loads rationalised, wide beam for the length, 2:3 at worst, 1:1 ideally, and passage, anchor to charge, repeat. I love the rampant random solar cells on everything everywhere. That makes sense since so much light woube reflected off the waves into the sides of the hull.
ngl it's fairly funny that the crew's "cabin" is just some closet essentially that has a sink, toilet, shower and the only thing separating their 'bedroom' is a shower curtain. I mean it's livable but extremely funny when the living conditions are so different in such a close proximity, very snow piercer vibes.
Do ya really need 4 large dining tables? I would remove the one in the cockpit and turn the bench around to face the sea. Would still have the one in the salon, the flybridge, and on the foredeck. Further, it needs a trash compactor for those long voyages. Simple addition I am sure. Beautiful condo on the sea!
Here's what I'd like to know and what I'm waiting for. How about a self-driving yacht with AI built in? Just like Tesla FSD. I'm waiting for these yacht makers to catch up. Wouldn't it be nice to cross the ocean and be able to put on your full self-driving mode and get a good nights sleep? The technology is 100% available but I see the yacht industry is still stuck in the early 2000's. Get with the times already!
I'm not a big fan of the interior design of this boat. Especially, down below. The "crew" cabins are ridiculous. I like the concept though and maybe someday electric powered boats will be more practical. Thanks Jack.
This boat is wonderful. I am looking for a great deal on a de-masted 40' used cat that I can pull out the diesel engines, put a large canopy over the whole boat and fill that with solar panels and add two electric motors and go. I could do this with having only a small 3500 watt propane generator.
Humm Nice vary vary Nice , two thumbs up to the buyer who buy a after market speed controller 'cuz the hibread 😂 system can get that big girl moving 38 to 43nots constantly inn hybrid before cavitation of props need focused back presher to prop to stop cavitation ,Norfolk V.A.
I love the fact it’s a diesel electric train on water with a big battery, big whoop 😂, you know that’s how they haul coal out of the ground right, now rich people can say I am eco friendly. Right on marketing…
It’s just a petrol driven cat those solar cells on their own would power two 120kw engines very little compared to the massive generators (petrol). Take away the generators and it’s unlikely to make a coastal hop let alone a ocean crossing
Making drinks - then falling down the stairs-- oy! I always say - you spend the least amount of time in a cabin, so it doesn't need to be a hotel room. But the doors might not open all the way! The crew will NOT have a great space in a cat. The electric/diesel system is the future. Cat designs are not very practical - built for a specific client. A very specific client.
if this were my boat, and my design, I would add a sail to the front for an even more even more awesome boat, longer range. designers today are just too stupid to think of that
I like it, though it’s confusing. They seem to be showing two different boats in the video. Compare 10:11 and 12:27. The DH is the first one and doesn’t have the panels all along the sides but the second one does. My guess is that the video of the boat at sea is marketing video from Sunreef and isn’t the specific boat they are showing, but the same model.
once someone shows me how the recycle batteries (which dont last forever and cost a fortune), the plastics invoved are not easy either..So calling yourself eco friendly is a pile of bs..metals can be fully recycled, and wood can be replaced.
if you like, you can educate yourself on battery recycling; there's loads of places doing it now. and GRP hulls wont need to be recycled for generations now.

Aside from the eco part. I'm surprised more modern yachts are diesel electric. Electric motors are proved to have better torque and controlability.

$5 million Yatch!!
Nice video but the transition music (and piano plinking) between segments is awful.
It would be great if you can use a kite to help give it some speed in winds
I know Silent Yachts offers this feature; something for Sunreef to consider - Jack
I'm not a big fan of the interior design of this boat. Especially, down below. The "crew" cabins are ridiculous. I like the concept though and maybe someday electric powered boats will be more practical. Thanks Jack.
It's a beautiful boat. They will get frustrated with the fridge's door swinging open into the kitchen.
Yery interesting. but I like the green line method with the hybrid drives I think?
what is the best boat under 1m usd. looking for the biggest boat within the Budget
How much does such a boat sell at ??
If I ever get the finances, it will be between this one and the silent yachts - would have to sea trial both.
Donate for a Dream
I like the idea of electric drive, but I be worried in bad weather. It won’t have enough power to ride the waves.
The boat is crossing the Atlantic so it will be interesting to hear how it got on in the swells - Jack
nearly four hundred horsepower, and torque like a tugboat, i think it will be just fine.
This boat is wonderful. I am looking for a great deal on a de-masted 40' used cat that I can pull out the diesel engines, put a large canopy over the whole boat and fill that with solar panels and add two electric motors and go. I could do this with having only a small 3500 watt propane generator.
They need to make one that can get away from pirates since not all ports allow firearms
Personally, I would opt for diesel engines with the large lithium battery bank.
I love the fact it’s a diesel electric train on water with a big battery, big whoop 😂, you know that’s how they haul coal out of the ground right, now rich people can say I am eco friendly. Right on marketing…
LOL Silent Yachts have had these for years and crossed the Atlantic already... Get up to speed chief!
Jolly good 👍
I suppose if i was filthy rich, this is the kind of option I'd choose.
It’s just a petrol driven cat those solar cells on their own would power two 120kw engines very little compared to the massive generators (petrol). Take away the generators and it’s unlikely to make a coastal hop let alone a ocean crossing
Diesel*
Can you imagine the EV battery fire in that?
Love the range, but way too slow...
The fridge open on the wrong side. Small thing , but shouldn’t happen in the price range of this boat.
Pollution free yeah right 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
if this were my boat, and my design, I would add a sail to the front for an even more even more awesome boat, longer range. designers today are just too stupid to think of that
They make a sailing version…
I love the fact that it’s environmentally friendly and very practical but as a boat, it’s one of the ugliest things I’ve ever seen 😂
It's form follows... function
I like the set up all except the crew stations that look like you're trapping them in the hull like prisoners
Not for me. It’s missing plenty of
Producing a battery with a 380 kWh battery is not exactly Panda Friendly :-)
Who said anything about having a crew, I'm 1 person
once someone shows me how the recycle batteries (which dont last forever and cost a fortune), the plastics invoved are not easy either..So calling yourself eco friendly is a pile of bs..metals can be fully recycled, and wood can be replaced.
if you like, you can educate yourself on battery recycling; there's loads of places doing it now. and GRP hulls wont need to be recycled for generations now.
Feeling sad for the crew! Its a shame, to put a person in such a tiny space!
Jesus wept! That crew space is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen! Good luck attracting and retaining decent crew, with that level of accom
8 million US dollars ...
👁👁
The future is solar panels over sails (or maybe a combo?)
But gawd this is ugly.
No attempt to blend at all.
It's a cat, stick a mast on it and a coupe of sails.
There is a sailing version already but not everyone wants to sail… - Jack
What about a dark rainy day and no sun for awhile. Useless.
That’s why it has generators too…
😂😂😂
Virtue signalling.
Ugly and very un-aquatic. Maybe I'm alone in this assessment.
That was a really poor walkthrough.
You missed 3 guest rooms. Missed the 2 crew cabins.
You chopped from one side to other.
A confusing mess.
Your reviews/walkthroughs are getting worse and worse.
Ouch! Thanks for watching though 😉
That is one ugly boat with horrible "crew" quarters.
Thanks Jack, great review although you seemed a bit rushed? It would have been great for you to cross over with Josh @FlashPrawn and give us a detailed report on the voyage :-) What was the finished price of Double Happiness please?
Thanks Paul, we’re always under pretty tough time pressure to film the boats before they get busy at shows. It is what it is and hopefully these tours are just tasters ahead of a sea trial where we can go into more depth. Do check out my written review in the pinned comment, too, lots more detail there. Thanks for watching - Jack
