20 Cent Coins?! Valuable OLD Surprises in the Junk Silver Bin!

- Whenever I get the chance to pick up junk/scrap silver, I do it. Silver's been up and down, but long-term, I think it's on the rise. There's no better way to stack silver (IMHO) than with old coins. In the junk silver bin, you'd typically expect to find coins in very circulated condition, or common dates. Every once in a while, though, you might find a gem. Today I found several!!

Those 20-cent coins have crazy low mintages! I happen to have an 1858 Canadian 20-cent piece in my own collection--it's kinda crazy how much they're worth relative to their face value.
I have one, as well. It's holed, but otherwise in good shape. Because of the hole, I got a really good price on it - needed to fill that hole in my collection!
I love the 20 cent coins! I never did know too much about them until I read the little description in the Charlton guide. I need to get to my local coin shop more often to look at the junk silver. It's in downtown London, and all the main roads that lead to it have been under construction for what seems like ages.
For a long time I really wanted to get my hands on an 1858 Canada 20 cents. They're pretty pricey! I finally found one with a hole in it that otherwise had great detail, so I picked it up. It's still one of my favourites. At first I thought it would be a place-holder until I found a better one, but I'm not even sure I'd need to!
@@CADRollHunter Very nice! That's good to know. Hole or no hole, it's still an awesome piece of history!
The 1904 NFLD looks like it is a strong VF!! Lovely find!!
Nice surprise in that "junk" silver for sure!
Totally love the Newfoundland!1 Cheers from Australia
Thanks for watching from all the way down under!
Awesome pickups there James! Those 20 cents silver coins Newfoundland are very nice!
Thanks! I was very lucky to find those oldies in there!
Wow! 🎉 congratulations on those 20 cent pieces. Super cool. And even some nice wheaties too
This was a great little purchase, for sure. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Speaking of Newfoundland, i went to my local coin shop recently and found an 1869 Newfoundland penny in the bin of large pennies, which was a nice surprise
Nice - take a look at the date. The only NFLD pennies in the 60s were 64 and 65. Was it maybe a 1896? Thanks for watching!
@CADRollHunter Just took a second closer look and it said 1865. It was kind of pitted around the date and the date itself was a little slick, so I can see where it came from. Thank you for letting me know.
WOW The Newfees are AWESOME, James! You can send them to me I will grade them! LOL Great score!
Wait a second... 😆
Wow! Nice purchase. The New Foundland coins are awesome! Low mint and in pretty nice condition.
I love it when I can pick up some really old silver like this - especially really low-mint stuff. Thanks!
What an awesome score! Congratulations!
Thanks!
Wicked score with the 20¢ pieces!
Thanks! These were great surprises in 'junk' silver!
I once got a Newfie 25 cents as Junk silver for half of spot. Great video and find!
Now that's an awesome pick-up!!
Oo! So jealous! I eventually want to get a 20 cent coin for myself as well.
I love Canadian silver. My favorite is the 5cent pieces. My best coin is the 1858 large cent,it's in pretty rough shape thoigh
.Thanks for an awesome video.
Thanks, Kevin! Those "fish scales" are the hardest ones to come by and typically command a premium, so aren't usually included in junk silver. I still need many of those!!
@@CADRollHunter I picked up a few a my local jewelery store recently in my Canadian junk silver purchase.I was excited and very happy to see them when I went through them.
Nice score on those Newfoundland 20 cent pieces.
Thanks, Albert!
Great find on those 20 cents!
Thanks, Alrik!
Love those 20 cent coins.
I managed to pick up a Canada 1858 20 cent coin - it's holed, but it's one of my faves!
Nice score. I need an antique Tim near me.
We all do!! Thanks for watching!
I luv them Newfoundland 20c coins!
Me, too - and they're such low mintage that it makes them very appealing.
Out detecting on the UP of Michigan last week when I got that stinking zinc penny tone. Boy was I surprised when it turned out to be a 1915 silver Canadian 5 cent piece. Do you have any in your collection.
That's an incredible find. The 1915 is the key date in the early 1900s silver 5 cent pieces. It's actually the only one from1902-1919 that I don't have in my collection. Congrats!
@@CADRollHunter The obverse is toned but the reverse isn't as toned. Will try to send you pictures when I get back home, later in the month.
@@CADRollHunter PS; excellent details on the coin
@@vernowen2083 Nice - thanks! I'd love to see it!
17x face is crazy
Thanks for watching!
Definitely not junk. Great buy!
I think so too! Thanks!
Great finds but excellent information!
Thanks so much - I'm glad you liked it. I appreciate you watching!
You make me wonder what I have in Canadian coins. Copper, yes...some silver...but I don't have a clue on varieties, etc.
coinsandcanada.com is a great free resource on Canadian varieties. If you have the time, dive in - you'll have lots of fun and might discover something in your own Canadian coin collection. Good luck!
The 20 cent coin was
Known in its day as a

Pennies were placed
On a railway track when
An approaching train was

Flatten them out
It was a common

Thanks for the info! And thanks for watching!!
Where do you get these “junk silver”’s? I wanna see if any are near markham or toronto.
I buy them from an antique dealer who buys estates. It's very common for coin collections/silver to be included in those purchases.
Amazing coins!
Thanks! Do you collect Canadian coins?
@@CADRollHunter I do! I am actually Canadian and my collection is entirely Canadian coins!
@@juliew966 Awesome! Have fun, and I hope you're enjoying my videos!
@@CADRollHunter your videos are awesome! I watch them everyday
@@juliew966 Awesome - thanks so much!
Nice! Hold on to those steel pennies. Not rare, but super hard to find, especially the D and S ones.
You'll have to see my upcoming video (part 3 of the collection purchase). There were a bunch of steelies in that!
@@CADRollHunter oh yea!! Ican't wait!!
I still do not get how the 1967 80% can weigh exactly the same as the 50% when they both use copper as a base metal and are the same volume it should be impossible
Alchemical perfection. Lol
Yeah, I need someone to do the math for me!
That 1904H is an XF45 all day long.
Thanks for weighing in!! Appreciate it!
On the silver degen club subreddit I some guy take a picture of a bucket of Canadian silver dollars.....he said he refines them😮 😢 bye bye silver dollars
That hurts my soul. I hope he's checking The dates first...
I guess that's a way the mintage goes down on old coins. It's too bad
@@ItsDanielMonetizedit brings down the surviving population and makes them more rare
that's a lot of old coins and silver
That 20 cent was only minted for a year I believe and its 92.5 sterling. Very little minted.
That's right - Canada only minted the 20 cent in 1858. Newfoundland held out and minted the in a number of years, only switching to 25 cent coin sin 1917. Thanks so much for watching!
is the latest coin book called: Canadian Coins - Vol.1 - Numismatic Issues 2024-2025 - 77th Edition? thanks

@@CharlesWang-s4i That's great - hopefully that helps us both out!
Do you end up selling your silver? And if so, where do you sell it?
Hey, Bill! Thanks so much for supporting the channel - I really appreciate it! So far, I haven't sold any of the silver I've acquired. I'm not exactly a silver stacker, but I do have a bunch of junk silver that I've purchased over time. At moment, I'm just holding onto it. If silver spikes, I might consider selling some, but I think I'll hold onto it for the long term. Thanks!
What is this "sell"?? Is it like buying?
@@digginggopher Exactly!! Sell doesn't compute. I hear it's something other people do. But not me!! 🤣🤣
Nice 👍🏻
Thanks!
I don't know what's going on here in the US but I've only got one 2024 penny and no nickels or dimes!
Interesting. Usually here in Canada I don't start finding coins until September, so status quo here!
Beans
Cool beans.
Canadian brick and mortar coin dealers are slime. Nowhere close to coin apps silver and gold melt. Will be selling my silver and gold in upstate N.Y.
I'd be interested to know what Canadian dealers are offering for your gold and silver vs. American dealers. This would be helpful info for any followers of this channel. Thanks!
@@CADRollHunter I live in Montreal. One place was offering me $4CDN each for 40% Kennedy halves. 17 times face for 80% Canadian and 20 times face Canadian for US 90% coins. The place is Carsleys Whetstone in Montreal. I'm sure I can find better.
