Going from Bricky’s hour long essay about CONTROL, it’s story, combat, strengths, weaknesses, and feel and then watching this again is a real experience Especially since the both are so similar in their conclusions.
Most of the criticism of the guns is fair, but if you manage to lean into it hard enough and specialize it definitely can keep up. When I absolutely loaded up the spin mode to do extra damage on crits, and refund bullets on crits it turned into a boss mulching buzz saw. Plus with enough shield/dash recharge and enough shotgun you can solve any problem.
I only wish I had a fifth of a percent of Max's crack goblin energy. His editing will have to suffice for now as it simultaneously gives me immense joy and a crippling seizure compilation.
How this game remained so low key and never caught on is a tragedy, you’d think with how big the SCP thing got they’d be interested in a game based in the “NOT-SCP” foundation and this unique and interesting story.. also the key to being op in late game is stacking the damage and fire rate mods as much as possible.. nothing else maters.
I never knew until this review that Control was SCP-related, and I surely am not alone. From what I had seen of gameplay, it looked extremely mundane in setting, mechanics, and story. I never was interested in playing Alan Wake and Quantum Break either, despite very well knowing of their existence. Seeing now that the story is probably more interesting than I thought is a welcome development. But even then Remedys games are unappealing to me. I think Remedy needs to get out of their comfort zone with their next game, if they want to attract new customers that haven't played their prior titles.
This game was a pain to run on xbone and PS4 cuz of all the spectacle. It was really huge on PC because it was one of the first games that debuted RTX and DLSS technology
A little late to the party, but there is one saving grace in the DLC that I love... and that is the freaking movie camera fight. Fighting on moving platforms, dodging obstacles, and vibing with the music makes it so good I would play it just for that boss fight again.
4:40 If you hold the button, the item you are going to throw flies next to you and hovers waiting for you to throw it, but you can also just tap the telekinesis button and launch stuff at an enemy instantly, the flying telekinesis enemies can't dodge those quick launches.
It's how I beat Salvador. Just camp behind one of the pillars near the TV while occassionally pot-shooting some Hiss grunts to seizable health and then throw things at the main guy to take down his shield and his health.
I just played the game this year, really glad it's getting more of a following now. Saw it advertised when it came out, but ignored it till I saw a lets play and it hooked me enough to go buy it myself.
I thought Jesse having a bland robot like or cold personality was a very purposeful choice to show the severity of her circumstances and trauma, she didn’t have any control before and thus her emotions, nuance, etc. we’re stripped bare by necessity, for survival. She was a puppet simply following the motions and being dragged around by fate and the mysterious forces behind the foundation. Near the end of the game the information is more flushed out, the fog of confusion and mystery is mostly cleared, if you could follow along, and Jesse has finally gained “Control”
It being a purposeful choice doesn't make it entertaining by itself. There's a reason why Alan wake (1) had Alan be sorrounded by a cast of much more reactive characters like Barry. It's because Alan on his own at that point in time would have gotten stale no matter how intended his character was.
I was laughing so hard after the first 4 minutes my eyes and throat hurt. But Max isn’t wrong. Rocks are, besides the Pierce gun, the only good damage dealing option you’ve got. Pierce outscales literally everything with headshots, ADS damage boosts and charge shots, but you’ve got two shots before you have to wait for more ammo. In the meanwhile, just throw rocks bro- after finishing the Foundation DLC (which needs another expansion) I got a mod that makes it so the Pierce doesn’t need to charge…at all. And my fucking RPG Pistol is 1000% faster with over 3 times the AOE. If you do side quests and get the mods (which the game shits out at you to the point you will usually have a LOT of great ones so long as you actually kill things and do side missions) you can basically kill everything with Charge and Pierce with zero issues. *Everything.* First boss? Dead. Horde of Area Bosses? Fuck em’. The final Boss? Crickety crack, there goes his back
I don't know about rocks and pierce being the only good damage source. I found that, at least while i was playing the game, playing the melee and shotgun would also usually still one or two tap enemies
@@thesnek5311if you can consistently land headshots or even enough body shots the regular pistol can be good, I never hit a strong damage fall-off with it
The thing I love about "Take Control" in the ashtray maze is that it actually explains major plot points of the game before they even happen. These lines show the death of Polaris' body, and Jesse being taken over by the Hiss as a result: Oh, can’t you see, see the light is fading? And in the night the demons rage and call your name No deeper madness than your own making Visions lashing blades of shame, but will you take the blame? And these lines explain that Polaris has become a part of Jesse and can live on even without the main body: A rising sense of awe and wonder A might I see has always been deep within me I can feel my inborn power I call the shots when it’s all finally clear to see The same thing can be said about "The Poet and the Muse" and "Children of the Elder God" from Alan Wake
"You just have to join the railroad." I can hear Mitten Squad foaming at the mouth and dying off in the distance. Also, you're telling me this game emphasizes throwing shit at people, people at people, and people at shit like what was my favorite thing about playing The Force Unleashed? Sold.
Glad to see I was not the only one who felt like Pierce wasn't the weapon that "hit like a truck", but rather the one that hit like the ENTIRE FACTORY OF TRUCKS.
"Return to monke" being the optimal playstyle sounds like a plus to me. If I can kill everything by hurling random debris at it with my mind, why would I even want a gun?
If you overdo throwing shit around, it gets boring fast as he said. I personally used the "sniper rifle" and the handheld chargable grenade launcher. That worked out well.
@@shlrup6154 personnaly I had the normal handgun min-maxed with 3 +100-60% damage to head, even at the end that thing still worked, tho monke was still more efficient

I love that set pieces like Ashtray Maze are basically a normal part of Remedy's games now. Anyone who has played Alan Wake and are familiar with Poets of the Fall knows why.
I played control after seeing this video and can indeed confirm that Jesse is a fish in personality. The only emotional development she gets is from side-quests given by the *all powerful* finnish janitor and a single thing she says at the end of the Ashtray maze. Lobotimizing Dylan was fun though. I can also confirm that you will become an ape and/or chimp once you dive into the 2 ton boulder hurdling. Objects in and out of your sight line will fly straight at your target at actual ludicrous speed. You could yeet a sand particle and it'd break every bone in your targets body at once.

I played this game way before this video and I maxed out my launch ability as soon as possible. I did what maxor did without his influence, his review is very accurate

Going from Bricky’s hour long essay about CONTROL, it’s story, combat, strengths, weaknesses, and feel and then watching this again is a real experience
Especially since the both are so similar in their conclusions.

This was pretty big on PC because it was one of the first games to truly showcase RTX and DLSS.
If only he was able to find a damage mod....
@@roberttausig9170 I'd rather they keep going with the Remedy universe than pander to some new kids with short attention spans.
A little late to the party, but there is one saving grace in the DLC that I love... and that is the freaking movie camera fight. Fighting on moving platforms, dodging obstacles, and vibing with the music makes it so good I would play it just for that boss fight again.
i feel that kind of got ruined by having a tomasi boss with 10x the HP and how the autosave works for that fight. but yeah its fun at the start

If you hold the button, the item you are going to throw flies next to you and hovers waiting for you to throw it, but you can also just tap the telekinesis button and launch stuff at an enemy instantly, the flying telekinesis enemies can't dodge those quick launches.
eh, quick launches don't really do much damage. it feels better to hold it for a while and then throw it
@@weenusgobbler3862
I do not reccommend doing quick launches for all enemies, only for the enemies capable of dodging slow launches.
Hey, the guns aren't completely useless. You can use it while "throw rock" is on cooldown.
Assuming you aren't just hiding behind a pillar, of course.
It's how I beat Salvador. Just camp behind one of the pillars near the TV while occassionally pot-shooting some Hiss grunts to seizable health and then throw things at the main guy to take down his shield and his health.

Yeah the post-game content really does some legwork for her character, and yeah obv Darling and Trench Are the best.
It being a purposeful choice doesn't make it entertaining by itself.
There's a reason why Alan wake (1) had Alan be sorrounded by a cast of much more reactive characters like Barry.
It's because Alan on his own at that point in time would have gotten stale no matter how intended his character was.
1:42 was peak. Mixing OGoA with explosion is... fitting. One of my fav games ever
The final Hartman fight can go die in a fire tho
@@thesnek5311if you can consistently land headshots or even enough body shots the regular pistol can be good, I never hit a strong damage fall-off with it
odly enough ı much prefered charge as ı've had 2 lvl 4 damage mods
The thing I love about "Take Control" in the ashtray maze is that it actually explains major plot points of the game before they even happen.
These lines show the death of Polaris' body, and Jesse being taken over by the Hiss as a result:
Oh, can’t you see, see the light is fading?
And in the night the demons rage and call your name
No deeper madness than your own making
Visions lashing blades of shame, but will you take the blame?
And these lines explain that Polaris has become a part of Jesse and can live on even without the main body:
A rising sense of awe and wonder
A might I see has always been deep within me
I can feel my inborn power
I call the shots when it’s all finally clear to see
The same thing can be said about "The Poet and the Muse" and "Children of the Elder God" from Alan Wake
Seeing both in and out of universe their all the same band yes.

Levitating entire forklifts and watching two tons of unyielding metal shatter into one of those flying dodgy fucks is so satisfying. It just swats them out of the air, glorious.
