I joined the Navy after High School. I was on active duty for 20 years. I met and married this woman a year after joining, and we were married for 4 1/2 yrs. After we divorced, I questioned my sexuality. I realized I was gay, but because of DADT, I could not be with a man, for fear of being discharged. So, I was closeted, and alone, for 15 years.
After completing active service, I came out, and had my first relationship with a man. You are so fortunate to be able to be honest and open about your sexuality. Always remember to be who you need to be.

Charles Woolley I'm sorry you were alone for so many years. I understand your struggle and lack of life. I experienced the same but in a different way. I'm writing a novel based on my life. It's amazing how freeing and healing it is when I read first and second draft chapter's for editing. The mind never forgets that kind of loneliness or longing.
Thank you for serving our country, Charles.

As a gay Viet Nam U.S. Army vet, I want to thank you for your courage and candor (and wit). There may be some dark days ahead for LGBT in the U.S. Military and we need to stand together and stand tall. Words like yours help us do that.

I really needed to watch this. I just enlisted a few days ago and I leave the 10th of October for boot camp and I myself am gay. The whole gay thing in the military really did make me a little hesitant on joining but this makes me feel much better. Thank you for the video and I hope that all is still well!

Thank you for your courage in making this video.
I was in the AF in the early 80's before DADT.
Had a friend who disclosed his sexuality because his partner
was coming back stateside, and he got orders to leave.
He was discharged under less then honorable conditions.
Me I did the pretend game and kept a very low profile until
    my term was up.
Didn't reenlist. Was always looking over my shoulder. and
    was approached in
what they called witch hunts to out guys.
Glad that you can now be open with your sexuality.
Good Luck and hope your carrier is whatever you want it to
    be.

I'm so glad I found this video. I have been tossing and turning on whether or not I should even contact the NR back, about my dreams of joining. Although, I've been "out" my whole life, and I'm flamboyant, the extra "bullying" and the fear of being "gay-bashed" has stifled my interest. In fact, it's really my one of my greatest fears. I have a question, or a few, though. You mentioned in a later comment that a lot of Navy (Men and Women) lose sight of why they joined the service. Why is that, do you think? And, why did you join? I want to join the education opportunities and to sea (get it!) the world. That and I want to challenge myself, both physically and mentally.

    • @litechange
      @litechange  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think they lose sight of it because of the crappy side of it all. People just seem to lose motivation but some people dont. Hopefully you wont be one of those people! I joined for schooling, seeing the world, and to serve my country!

+Hugo Davenport in the army we wear a reverse color or subdued flag patch and foreign service badge (patch authorized if deployed whether combat arms or not) but Navy doesnt wear a flag on their blueberries. they have a limited number of accounterments outside of their name and branch which are all sewn on such as anchors/ships/tridents/ranks etc

Hey Chris thanks for the video it was very helpful! Like you I am gay and I am leaving for basic training on September 24th for the USAF. I am very excited to go but like you I have had some concerns and questions with being gay in the military and haven't been able to find much online about it so thank you again for the video! I would love to hear any additional tips and suggestions you may have I know the showering thing was a concern. And I was also worried about stricter and more prejudice comments....I know you said most people are chill about it which makes me feel a little better. But it's still one of my fears.

Thank you for your service and this great video. After I graduated high school, I was so afraid to join the Navy due to my sexuality. I am a gay male, so I didn't know how they would accept me or if I would ever be accepted if I would have joined at that specific time. Let me tell you something, I did not join the Navy. Instead, I went off to college to do something I really didn't have a passion for. Everyone doubting yourself... Please do what it is you want to do and DO NOT let your sexuality hold you back. We need more positive people like you in our society. Thank you!

Hey Chris, I really appreciate this video....I served in the military (Army) back in the "Don't Ask..Don't Tell" era. So, if I wanted to come out...I couldn't! I joined literally right after high school. I wasn't out..at all. Hell, I wasn't even out to myself...lol. Wasn't until I was at my duty station that I went a gay club....what an eye opener! That night I met my first "gay" friend...Joel, a sexy Filipino guy, who could dance his azz off. Guess that's what initial drew me to him because I (still) am a dancer. We danced til 4am...then went to the local after hours hangout get breakfast and talk...that's I realized how kool he was, is, rather....25 yrs later, we still remain gud friends.... it all started that eventful night in Hawaii!! 😉😜 Oh, I forgot to mention that has four diamonds embedded into his front teeth...caught my eye as we were dancing...heheWell that's my coming out to myself story. Getting to know Joel opened my eyes to this whole new and exciting realm of possibilities....I had a lot of 'first' on that little island...😆

THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! It really did cheer me up when it comes to terms of being gay in the military. I'm currently planning to either enlist or do rotc for either Navy or Air Force. It's been a real struggle because I've been terrified about how people would react if they found out (military people in particular). I think I'd like to document my journey on whatever path I take but I do not know if I should omit the fact that I'm a lesbian even though its blindingly obvious. Should I or should I not say that I'm pretty fucking gay?

I know this video has been posted for a while now, but I just saw it and it really helped me out a lot. I am currently awaiting my ship date and am actually scared because I am gay. I am open as fuck and not closeted, but I know that people and word gets around and I'm just scared that I won't make friends. It was hard for me in middle school because I was "different" and people didn't like me being different. Thank you for this video and giving me hope that it'll be okay!

I'm so happy to see that we can be open and serve now. I wish it would have been this way when I was younger and I would have served but back then I would have been kicked out. Not only that but I had a problem with serving my country and my country not looking at me as being equal to them. Anyway thank you for your service.

Enlightening video! My fiancé just graduated from BMT and he is in the USAF. During graduation and the family weekend, he would introduce me as such and we were received very well for the most part. Still have a lot of concerns/ questions moving forward, such as living on base and what rights we have, but would you say that is changing? I know we've seen some instances

I wanted to join the Marine Corps when I was 18. Actually I did but backed out just before getting sworn in. And why? Because of the fears you touched on. That was almost 40 years ago. Thanks for your service and thanks for having way more courage than I did.
