Footnotes: I live 15 miles south of Phillipi. My 2 great, great grafathers who lived near P hillipi fought for the CSA, never did own slaves. O n e of them got raided by the Union and they stole some of his horses and livestock which prompted him to join the CSA and fight the Northern invaders. Another kin to me had the same issue and joined Jackson's brigade. Stonewall Jackson's sister lived in Beverly, WV and Stonewall would visit her during the war. My son lives about 2 blocks from the house, which stills stands. One may still see the Union trenches on a hill in Beverly.
Jackson and his sister eventially " went their seperate political/war" ways and their relationship soured. I believe his sister and husband operated a hospital of sort from their Beverly home during the war.
Be sure to find John Brown's Cave when you go to Harper Ferry. I was a young teen when we went into the cave. It's next to the railroad tracks. That's all I can remember.
Once again, y'all put out an awesome video! Thanks so much for putting out informative and wholesome content. Y'all never fail us. Much appreciated! Kevin
Been to Harpers Ferry several times. Encourage you to go there and do a piece...not only on the Brown Ràid and its significance to the "coming storm" but also Harpers Ferry's role in the wartime itself.
Used to go through there in the early 80’s working auto supplier to local West Virginia parts stores. Seems like there was a small church school there that had a beautiful campus. Loved that area of the country
My great, great granddaddy... (Sorry, I know I sound like a crazy old man beginning a story like this)... Seriously, my 2nd great grandfather claimed to have killed the first Union man of the war near Laurel Hill. Not sure I really believe that story, but he supposedly carried with him for many years affidavits "signed by two of the men with him, verifying this fact." His name was Calvin Brown Renick, and he was with Company A of the 14 Virginia Cavalry out of Greenbrier County.
The most nowdays Virginian border West Virginia counties were proconfederate majority with higher % slaves population than the 4.6% average slaves population in the whole West Virginia, Greenbrier with 12.7% slaves. Only Morgan county was here prounionist majority with 2.6% slaves population. Berkley county's Maryland border part had prounionist population, but the county was near proconfederate majority. At the original Kanawha state territory was smaller where there was the 0% slaves populated Hancock counthy which almost voted to Lincoln in 1860. During the Civil War West Virginia state became bigger territory than the original 1861 plan. In the original Kanewha state had higher % slave populated counties in Kanawha river valley (Kanawha county 13.7% slaves and Putnam 9.2% slaves), where salt companies used slave workers to produce salt. Except for the Kanawha river valley and later recieved (1863) territories the most counties had low % slaves population in West Virginia and interesting mathematical correlation low % slaves higher % prounionism.
@@avenaoat Thanks for those stats, and that correlation makes sense. According to a genealogy book called the "Renicks of Greenbrier," my 2nd great grandfather's family had 4000 acres in Renick's Valley, 600 in Falling Spring, and several other parcels. To quote from that book, "One of Calvin's letters states 'He kept 300 cattle, 700 to 1000 sheep, raised 125 horses, and fattened 200 hogs.' This work was done by the slaves, but required a great deal of managing." He eventually moved to Franklin County, Virginia, and took the slaves and horses there. For me, this is the hard part of genealogical research; slavery. I know of at least two other ancestors from Franklin County who had slaves. One of them was a revolutionary war pensioner who moved to Ohio. He owned thousands of acres of land and a number of slaves, but he signed his name with an X.
@@roblaing7383 The touristic industry was also important for Greenbrier, where the slaves were used. The Deep South rich famililies sent the wives and children to Greenbrier hot springs during the summer to avoid the yellow fever, malaria. President Buchanan also was in Greenbrier. This county had strong connection to the South, not only the slaves population. The (East) Virginia had some smaller areas, where more less prounions lives. Loudon county, Shenandoa valley and the Tennessee-Kentucky border area. Here the Heroi of America/Red strings had more supporters. Loudon county had prounionist military group. South Carolina is thought to be most proconfederate, but the 4 Northern counties helped the deserters. In the upper border states Delaware was the most prounionist but some joined the Confederate Army from this state.
One tip if you go to Harpers Ferry, bring your card as the US park service no longer accepts US Currency just credit cards and five foreign currencies last time I checked including the Chinese Yen but the US Dollar is not accepted.
Okay, hadn't heard that, but just checked and it looks like you're right about them going cashless but they say they take no currency of any kind at Harpers Ferry, which is ok because we have no Chinese money anyway! Thanks for the heads up and thanks for watching.
@@StoriesofAppalachia I remember when they started doing it and I live near Charleston WV. Several like myself were offended that the US dollar was not accepted but the other countries were for a while at least with the Yen being one of them. It is when I also started pointing out that the Federal Reserve is in fact the largest counterfeiter in the world since we went all fiat currency under Nixon and Fiat, fake and counterfeit all have the same meaning. The fact that the US Park Service (part of the federal government) violates federal law by refusing the notes that under the law is valid for all debts public and private. The fees and shops of the park are all public to private debts transfers. It just goes to show how totally worthless the money is when the government that prints it starts to refuse it. The US Courts even played with the idea and Mom a Chief Deputy Clerk at the time pulled out a bill and said have you read this. It is a federal crime to refuse cash for any bill in the US, while you can state you cannot give change it is still illegal to refuse it. Every few years you will hear someone does a protest by using small denomination or change to pay a fine or tax and they are forced to accept it. Only the federal government can break their own laws and not be jailed.
I went to college there. The town folk were so nice to this kid from jersey with an accent. Good people, good town and really fantastic food. From the best chile dogs with onions and slaw to pizza to. Pepperoni rolls beyond description and glazed donuts to a classy dinner at the motel just out of town. Filt like staying when I graduated but had duties and callings to answer.six years later purchased a 1861 copy of a Philadelphia inquirer with a picture likeness o col Kelly as the hero or Philippi. Report in t that paper exactly as you reported. f

They ran the university out of town causing us to lose lots of revenue and now almost every business has closed. Everything is controlled by 2 or 3 people who own most of the buildings and are on city council. They deny request from anyone who wants to open business if they might be competition. This place is corrupt and has one of the worst rated school districts in the state. If a child needs mental health services, they say they can't afford the cost and end up putting the child in a detention center. I have a young family member who is in southern Alabama rather than being where her family can visit her up here. I have nothing but hatred for this city and county and I used to think this was the best place in the world to live.

Thank you!
Great video. If you’re back in WV, check out Rich Mountain, Droop Mountain & Carnifex Ferry as well.
Thanks for the suggestions. Looks like we’ll be coming to West Virginia more than once!
Good job guys......... you should have informed your audience the photo in your opening. Its the Hatfield family.
Yes it is. What better picture to illustrate an Appalachian history podcast than Devil Anse and his kin, right?
Oh, please choose Harpers Ferry! I have been there a few times way back in grad school. God bless y'all and future travels.
Also...glad you mentioned Mr Hanger and the development of his prosthetics enterprise.

Would be very interesting to find those affidavits if they're still around
Thank you guys for this awesome presentation! You both did a wonderful job of bringing us the details.
We appreciate it. Glad you liked our story!
A great story as always. Thank you so much for sharing.
