Hell of a day, I'm in that crowd somewhere, making some noise despite my complete inability to sing. Just got hold of a signed copy of the CD single from eBay, and checked that my name (Steve Goodson) and my friend (Polly Naylor) are both there in the big list of backing vocalists. Otway was gracious enough to make sure that every one of his fans who turned up for the recording got credited on the inlay for the single, after they spent months planning the campaign to ensure he had another hit for his 50th Birthday on 2/10/2002. There was some serious jubilation on the streets of London when the charts were announced and we all found out that we had succeeded and had a position of 9 in the UK singles chart. It's my one tiny claim to fame, which I can't really claim any personal credit for. I discovered Otway in the Cabaret tent at Glastonbury, and slowly discovered the insane little subculture of being a fan of this strange man from Aylesbury, just under an hour's drive from Towcester, where I grew up. Unfortunately I was much too young to know anything about Otway when he first started his career in 'music'. In theory I could have been there, if my Aunt had driven there with her toddler nephew in her dodgy old Lada. She was more into local Country/Western nights though, and it's unlikely she would've been interested in a long drive to see some weirdo in Aylesbury.
Went to see Otway years ago with a mate. I'd never heard of him so when the whole crowd did this during House Of The Rising Sun I thought I was going to pass out laughing. One of the best gigs I've ever seen.
Can’t wait to see him with a full band at the Face Bar in Reading in December. Seen him solo a few times and with the band will also be a great night I’m sure. He’s an absolute genius nutcase!
I saw him in Reading in 78 , at the Rainbow in 1981 ( I think ) and last night in Bristol. He is a musical genius , an amazing entertainer and a totally brilliant bloke . His band were superb and really throw themselves into the chaos . Cannot recommend seeing him live highly enough !!
What a great day that was .. the sound was recorded during the day at abbey rd studios by 100s of fans coming in and out during the day , every one at this concert was miming , lol and it really was the first time we had heard it all put together from the day. it got to number 9 together with Bunsen Burner for 50th all the 100s of fans at Abbey Road got name on the sleeve . I was one of the hitsquad and hawked it around local radio stations etc , great fun year before it all worked out
Saw him a couple of times through the course of my life. Truly one of the original artists. I always love how he engages the audience. More people should know about him.
Orway gifted with determination & his very own unique style which most of us lack in our own lives. He makes the audience part of his act which is his secret. Bill barret is one of the most underrated brilliant guitarists in the world without doubt
The covers are new to me and quite great. I wish I'd seen him, back in the day, when I could handle the noise and crowds. TH-cam is a poor substitute live - it never could be - like football, a better view but no atmosphere - but it's better that nothing, and a godsend for 'the poor, aged and infirm.' What a musical encyclopaedia. We are truly blessed and technology is sometimes a force for good.
I was there too, what a day! Recording at Abbey Rd in the afternoon and then the gig at the Astoria in the evening, brilliant! the only thing better was being at the palladium gig to celebrate Johns hit 9 months later!
Saw john and w willy about 30yrs ago in aylesbury friars he is a GT showman and has a good following and we are still playing jilted john the other side of the world
I'm so happy! Rising Sun is alway smy favourite live experience!!!!! (Though nicking babies comes a distant fourth!) This is going to all my mates that have never had the bottle to trust me enough to come to a gig I recommend...
John can pull 1000+ people to one of his gigs…trouble is they’ll always be the same 1000 people. A national treasure….well, maybe an Aylesbury treasure 😂
Not a previous pre recording in that studio being re-played in studio from a previous recording. Back then:: That time they used to really sing and really play music for talk show host. Back then. No lip syncing here.
Hello ! I wish I could understand ALL of the dialogue between Otway and his audience. I'm French, I am doing a research on folksongs and folksingers, modal music and Americana, and of course the change that this particular song has undergone between Clarence Ashley 1933 and The Animals 1964 is quite mesmerizing, the end of the story being this surreal explosive collapse which could be anything but evitable after its strange succès reaching a level of saturation inexplicable (or is it ?). Thnaks for giving me tips of translation… Bye !
This man is in my cambridge students book. It says: " You dont have to be young, good-looking (or een very talented) to enjoy a long career in the music business." He is cutee
Saw him in Norwich last night. He didn't have much to start with, but he's lost none of it. Brilliant. Special thank to the bloke in front of me who kept farting.

Same when I saw him at Wickham in 2012. Nearly passed out from laughing. Can’t ever listen to the song the same way now. 😂
The purest of geniuses! Undiscovered, Unsung, Uncelebrated but UNDETERRED,
Spot on.

Just seen him live. EXCELLENT. A great show. Thank God for John Otway.

Now that's audience participation at its best !
The 'guy' is Richard Holgarth. He also plays with Eddie and the Hotrods
Thank you
Eyve sed it before but it true - a lot of them are like this
thought it was going to be rubbish at the start, but loved it!
