I'm a person of color too, middle eastern. And I'm happy when games take inspiration from my culture! Really! But when they leave the skin color out of the equation, it sounds like "oh nice culture you got there! Nice music, nice etymology, nice customs, nice architecture. All of it is very inspiring. We'll use it all, except the way you look because it's ugly and not fitting"
There are videos that mention china's social hierarchy having lighter skin tones being more attractive, where as people with darker tones were seen as their lessers. Having tanned skin correlated to being a farmer, which then meant that you were of the peasant class. It's a somewhat universal sentiment that fair, pale skin is alluring since it's difficult to maintain. While dark skin can be just as beautiful it's also easier but getting too much sun may lead to skin cancer (at least from what I learned growing up). For most people with a lighter skin complection there's a set amount of sun exposure that their skin can tolerate and that varies from person to person. Some develope a tan over time in sunny areas and others just say "I don't have time to sit in the sun for hours everyday, time is of the essence!" and get spray tans. All this to say... I may have lost the point somewhere, but anyway a darker skin tone is nice. I think some people just shrug off the sentiment because it doesn't work well with the darker clothing designs as of late.
This whole situation is a testament to Hoyoverse's laziness. Aside from their poor implimentation of systems, Genshin Impact's character design is cookie cutter at its core. There are close to ninety characters in the game? *Wrong;* there are only five. Adult Male, Adult Female, Short Male, Short Female and Loli. That's all. The same five characters, recolored with slightly different accessories and hairstyles tacked on. Same goes for NPCs; they're all just textures painted onto meshes that are wrapped around the same few bases. I know that's done to cut costs and possibly not hinder in-engine performance, but good lord does it look bad after years of seeing it. My point is that giving characters varied complexions indicative of region could be a super easy fix; you have your basic skin tones down. Now all you need to do is adjust the saturation and brightness, saving multiple swatches for future use. That way the complexions can reflect both culture and region, in proximity to Teyvat's equator and Teyvat's poles and you wouldn't have to break the game to do it. ... but alas, this is Hoyoverse we're talking about. They won't fix it, and even if they wanted to, they probably can't for fear of the Chinese government hassling them. Not to mention in most parts across the Far East and even SEA-- the playerbases catered to the most, they tend to prefer fair skin and Hoyoverse doesn't want to upset their bottom line.
consider how large and how big their popularity, and their office is in their country, yeh it's a bad idea to have black characters. I mean, look at how chaotic and aggressive their fanbase is.
Ah yes. Hoyoverse doesn't want to stop catering to the people who pay them money. TY for actually acknowledging That they are an Asian Company who sell to South East Asia. 😊
If Dehyas kit was good she likely would have been one of the best selling banners ever, even if they put her on standard after. Look at how many people donated to a real charity just because Dehya inspired them to? Instead she has arguably the worse five star kit in the entire game. When this happened in Sumeru I already knew with how nonexistent representation there was in the desert characters that natlan would be the same. Anytime they release a character with melanin in them their kits often are pretty terrible. Then they wonder why they don’t sell well. Let your voices be heard. Sign the petition. Don’t back down guys
Literally, I do not understand making something inspired by and based on different real cultures and then refusing to actually create characters inspired by the people IN those cultures. No one forced Hoyo to make regions based on Africans and Latin/South Americans. No one held them at gunpoint to make a character based on the Kandake. So WHY, if you're so scared of the color brown, are you using inspiration from predominately brown nations?! Damn, at this point you should've just stuck to Northeast Asia and Europe.
Dude… are you restarted? It isn’t about “Europe” or “white people”. The characters with lighter skin complexions are supposed to be Chinese. Hoyo is a Chinese company at the end of the day. One controlled by the Chinese government. A corrupt government that finds pride in enforcing its country’s integrity to appear nationalistic to the rest of the world. They would literally kill everyone at hoyo if they put out black characters over Chinese characters. It’s bigger than black and white, it’s about government and censorship. You’re lucky Hoyo has been able to do everything they have so far without punishment. They clearly want to represent but have restrictions due to their government. Be grateful, for Hoyo and for growing up in a country where you’re able to speak freely and complain about such mild inconveniences like the skin colours of characters in video games. I’m a dark skinned individual myself and I couldn’t care less. Blame china, not Hoyo. Grow up
@@minuteman21 congratulations for being one of the only smart people in the comments. These babies don’t realize how lucky they are to live in a country without censorship laws
The Dehya situation killed all the hype i had for the game since then. She was my most anticipated character from sumeru and for the first time ever, i began to actively look up for leaks just to have an idea of her kit and how to build her... and it was a fucking nightmare. Every update there was a nerf or another restriction, lowered multipliers, etc, so, no, i refuse to get excited or hyped for this game ever again
to the point that everytime you see any kind of Dehya Showcase, commenters are being like "Nice Mona Showcase, Nice Kazuha Showcase, Nice Bennett Showcase" etc etc. it's insufferable.
The way Sumeru is partly inspired by India and Natlan is partly inspired by (mostly West) Africa and it just doesn’t show within the character designs. I love this game dearly but it’s had me so infuriated over this subject for years :’)
Lmao some people are like "i am from africa, i dont care about skin color." That is so funny. I am from south asia and already got my expectations dead during sumeru :v
How is this even an argument of authority, if you don't care good for you but don't silence those who do . Like , this apathy toward art , just consume consume consume mindset is so dumb .
"But I'm a white Latino and I don't care!!!" Buddy... what do you think historical event happened that lead to people like you even existing in the first place... like 💀💀💀
Even if a million players decided not to play for weeks, Hoyo would not care or change anything. They’ll still be earning millions regardless. Be it from Genshin, or the fact they have a ton of other titles making millions as well. And even if there’s that .00000000001% chance they do actually decide to add more characters representative of the real life culture they took “inspiration” from, it’ll not be genuine whatsoever since their hand was forced and no matter what, Natlan and the game/company itself will leave a bad taste in peoples mouths. People (colorist idiots that think they’re above it all) who say that “They’re a CN company so-“ No. Stopping you right there. Look at Reverse:1999. A game published by a CN company (Bluepoch, which is based in MAINLAND CHINA) that has multiple cultures, has taken real life inspiration and respected everything from its characters to its storytelling. Even down to the ENG voice acting which is phenomenal. Hoyo has been global and worldwide for a while now (and they’re completely and fully aware), yet continue to ignore and pretend the complaints outside of CN are nonexistent (which, there has actually been CN players expressing disdain and how “unnatural” the characters feel, even if it’s a minority which is surprising tbh). It still baffles me that people support this company with its endless list of controversies, and, to put it simply, not giving a single fuck about their playerbase. I get sunk cost fallacy is real, but my god has Hoyo drained these people’s time, money, and mental health for that matter as well. I was a day 1 Genshin player. Dropped midway through Sumeru. My issues were rooted on the lack of QoL and the slight red flags about the cast of Sumeru. Thank god my rose tinted glasses soon shattered because genuinely, in my opinion, nothing will change. I loved Genshin, and I would constantly hope and wish for it to get better. But my hope for this game and even company has lost a long time ago. All Hoyo wants is more money to make more games from different genres and monetize them instead of actually making a AAA standalone game. But then again, Hoyo is a scum company, willing to bot their follows back up to normal after that whole 3 wish debacle. So why even trust anything they say anymore if they’re willing to somehow stoop even lower lmao. Honestly, fire the Genshin director. He’s the true Genshin killer, player and dev relationship wise.
I agree with your point on Reverse:1999. Kaalaa Bauna was an awesome character, with an amazing story. And let's not forget Thorns, Carnelian, and Flint (to name a few) from Arknights. It just sucks how Hoyo doesn't want to experiment (even though they have the luxury for that); only taking inspiration and not giving a proper representation back.
meet cai haoyu, the sole reason honkai impact 3rd was about to fall nearly into end of service, they changed the director, game became way more generous, and it got a second breath of fresh air with players being satisfied again.
@user-ee6su2cf1b not quite. Genshin is Hoyo cash cow, among their games is the one that makes the bulk of revenue. That's how they can run the other games despite they make a mediocre revenue ( in comparison with genshin) and despite having at least one dead weight to carry ( tears of themis). Imagine if that milion players stopped spending, let's say, 1000$ each? That's some dent in the wallet they will notice.
Dude. I play reverse 1999. There are only 5 Full Dark skinned characters in that game. All Indian based Characters and Centurion a Mexian. And right now from Patch 1.6 to 2.0 where CN is at since Global Reverse 1999 is behind, the story is going from Austra Hungary 1913 to San Francisco 1990. And in the Patch set in Australia. The Arcanist we got from that area was Spatodea with Ezra as the Playable human. Both white (At least in their Chibi) and Both Immigrants to Australia so they aren't even Natives.
1 million player less would ABSOLUTELY hurt them. Not a great example. you would be hard pressed to find 100 k players who CHOOSE to not play anymore to protest for more than a month. Most players are addicted or don't care. In either case, Hoyo wins. They don't have to care about all of this because it's not financially relevant. It fucking sucks but that's how it is.
I'm willing to bet that despite all this and hoyo not listening during all these characters banners they are still gonna sell well and they are gonna still make tens or even hundreds of millions. This is the same issue that happened during the anniversary people complain and then proceed to still give them money COMPANIES care about one thing and thats money
Honestly so sad that almost no playable characters have darker skin tones, as they specifically reserved that for the NPCs. Like what are you hinting at Hoyo? Honestly a boycot sounds like a nice idea, but it would have to be properly coordinated.
The boycott didn't work for 3 wishes drama (i was there, i know), neither will now. Don't be delusional. Majority of players don't even use social media, and don't watch yt and videos like this. I'm not saying that your reason for boycott is bad or useless, i'm saying to be realistic about this situation and except that nothing will change. It's sad, yes, but it is what it is. Just continue to vent somewhere, find people who agree, and stop playing the game if you're that disappointed by it. I'm not saying hate, because hating the game and being disappointed by it are completely different things. And i hope one day you'll find inner peace.
@UltimateGenosyko npcs have darker skin tones while being invincible to attacks and there are plenty of light skin tone enemies. What is your point. Is it that the only dark skin tone characters are enemies (but there are dark # skin tone npcs).
I went to hoyo game subreddits just to see what fans think about their favs constant controversies and they could honestly care less. They chalk up any and all criticism as “twitters snowflakes who get mad at everything” instead of sitting back and realizing there’s more than pale people who inhabit earth. Mini rant over, they have their fan base and I doubt that they’ll change much because of it unfortunately…
I feel the same. I hate how a lot of people in the Genshin "community" refuse to consider that other people's opinions can have merit. Thanks for talking about this it's annoyed me since Sumeru.
This is something I've only seen mentioned by a single youtuber discussing this so far, but, I don't think it's Hoyo specifically, but the CCP breathing down their necks. We've seen how they treated pretty much everything where characters weren't white, such as the Black Panther or Star Wars poster, etc. Now, I'm not saying Hoyo is innocent, they done goofed up a hella lot, what I'm saying is, that even if Hoyo might want to give some hints of representation, there might be issues with big daddy government.
Fact: The people in the comment section that said they complain over a bunch of nothing hasnt had a day being misrepresented 😂. If you gonna take an inspiration from a culture, least you could do is be faithful to it. And dont come at me with the bullshit like "its a game, its fictional" well Ariel is fictional, Assassin creed shadow is also fictional, why cant they be black then if that is the case, dont get me wrong I hate the Ariel movie as much as the next guy, just feel like using it as an example for the clueless opposition 😂😂😂
Quite the opposite. I know what it’s like to be misrepresented. And this is nothing compared to real struggles people have actually endured. This whole thing really isn’t a big deal
The real problem is hoyoverse ignorance towards fans , like they didn't respond towards the backlash during lantern rite from the Chinese fandom ..so what we can expect
I have decide to stop playing genshin for this reason. Im honestly disgusted at this company and the part of the community that defends this behaviour. I'm so glad I had never spend a dime on the game.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. These issues usually resolve themselves when another company comes along with a better product that people want more. A good competitor will inevitably arise which will have characters of all skin colours, and Hoyoverse will be on the backfoot going to great expense trying to get their customer base back. Companies like this always create the demand for their own competition. Once McDonald's creates the need for a Burger King, it's impossible to make it go away and they just have to deal with the loss of market share permanently.
I love the Natlan designs themselves but its just so weird that they have barely any dark skinned characters in there... Like seriously what stopped them from making them at least a little more tan that the characters from other Nations???
@@angelshain01 I would absolutely love nothing more than game come out one day and simply be "inspired" by Chinese culture but exclusively only have black people in it and see how they would feel about
I don't care much for the lack of color in hoyo games (don't play em anymore to care), but I won't lie and say that colorism isn't a thing here. Dehya and Xianyan for example. This situation isn't one of those twitter drama's around "fix it art"
I'm an African person of colour and I used to advocate for change back in Sumeru. Nowadays I've given up, Hoyo lost 3 million followers and still did nothing so what are a 100 twitter warriors going to do? I'm not saying change isn't possible, I'm just burn out from the conversation and identity politics. Whether it's "inspiration" or appropriation seems irrelevant, the same people fighting are still the same people playing and paying for the game. What constitutes as black enough if everything but the skin is correct? Well it's still the skin, the most important part and I don't think Hoyo will ever get that. Shout out to everyone still advocating change, but just like Sumeru everything will blow over a few months into the new region.
In my opinion I still love genshin. I’m a Christian and follow the belief of “hate the sin love the sinner” so I still love genshin but I can still have negative opinions on the company that makes it.
there are three things to point out. One - there should be an artistic freedom. Two - it's a fantsy setting after all. Three - we need more dark skin wifus :)
@@oterogalvis Oh, go nag someone else. I play a Chineese game, because I'm sick of woke nonsense. You can eat your cultural appropriation. Don't like it, don't play it. Make your own game.
do you think wuthering waves would also be releasiing another region based on the culture such genshin do? like jinzhou based on chinese rn. we have a few characters with non-chinese name in wuthering waves such camellya, encore, calcharo etc.
Its called fantasy for a reason. You are trying to escape the realities of this world, not mirror them. If you are the type of person that NEEDS to be represented in everything that you see, that says more about you then the people making the content.
The people who say, "The only people who say, "Representation doesn't matter" are the kind of people who are constantly represented in media." are losers who are chronically online
If you are taking culture from a group of people at least represent them correctly, otherwise you are just whitewashing and contributing with cultural appropriations. Fantasy doesn't have anything to do with racism, it's stupid that you can excuse dragons in your plots but not non white people... 🤡
@@baconglwhy the hell would wanting to see someone like me immediately equate to wanting them to receive some form of racism? Cant we exist in these fictional realities? Why is skin colour something we need to escape? It’s like saying “only the harsh realities of life can be escaped if I jumped into a world where I’m only white” like as if being a poc is the issue. News flash, no it isn’t. It’s people like you who think how I look is automatically political. How about I want to live and breathe the way I look, the way I am, without it being political? No one has a problem with poc except the people who equate us with the horrors of reality. Reality is horrible yes, but why is our existence the problem to you? Hello? Do you see how insane you sound? It’s obviously the people who made life that way. That made us the “minorities” to begin with thats the problem. All *we* are is people who were affected by such bigoted people.
Why should we be fine with only seeing white people in all kinds of media okay, and not the rest of us? We make up as much as the world as them. Many of us grew up in a similar world to them in the new generations, is it wild to want to see someone like you in a game you like? What if you’re a developer for a game and you think it would be sweet to add someone that looks like you or your friend? What’s the genuine problem here? It’s not *woke* or *chronically online* to have people you see *daily* in your media. And this is a statement that expands wayy passed just hoyo. I will never understand that mindset. And I say that as someone that’s neither from the US or Asia and grew up in a predominantly white country but with a large community of all different kinds of people.
It's understandable for Mavuika since they don't want to change their legacy character (Himeko) As for the rest, their skin tone are most likely based on the temperature of the place they reside in. From what we've seen, a huge chunk of the land are quite lush, which explains why most of them are not dark skinned, but rather more tanned instead. Although we did see a volcanic area during the first sneek peak from 2 months ago. So far, Iansan is the only true dark skinned character. But there's still a possibility that they will release more dark skinned characters as there are always at least 3 characters who are not present in the initial trailer that becomes playable: Inazuma - Ayato, Kuki Shinobu, Heizou Sumeru - Candace, Layla, Faruzan, Kaveh Fontaine - Chevreuse, Chiori, Emilie But in my opinion, the real reason is that they're waiting for Iansan's sale to see whether or not people will choose to pull for dark skinned character in the first place. In the end, they're still a company & they want to make more money.
Though I'd like to think the characters they've yet to show will have darker skin, I doubt it, but I can still hope. As for Iansan, though you're likely right, I also think it's such a stupid way of looking at things. Like for example I don't pull for every lighter skinned charachter, so why would I for every darker skinned? Just because I won't be pulling for her doesn't mean I don't want other characters to have darker skin tone. (Btw, not attacking you, I'm attacking Hoyo) Similar with Dehya. I really want her, but I don't pull for standard banner characters. Like please Hoyo, give us more dark skin characters who aren't standard banner, and people will pull for them!
There are many lush areas in the real world where heat ≠ colour you are. There are literal rainforests where the majority of people are dark dark skinned. And I don’t even mean black people. So I don’t see why lush = how light you are.
@@AevyCh this is such a weak excuse for racism and cultural appropriation, they need to make money... Everyone does, why do they create really dark NPCs and criminals but not playable characters? Why are they taking from other cultures without representing their people?
Mavuika really should have had a Spaniard name instead of anything related to Mexico, South America, Maori or Pacific Islands. There are number of Spaniards with light-toned skin and red hair, probably some Visigoth legacy, idk lol
When did hoyo say they base there characters on regions inspired yes based no people are putting " offical info" from no where cn is biggest market so guess why they prioritize cn views. Inspiration doesn't mean everything has to be 1000000% correct

@@gintasasd no, what you are saying it's really obvious, they are targeting to the racist, but it's that an excuse for cultural appreciation? It's that a reason to white wash brown and black people culture?
Isn't that funny that all those "based and redpilled" people online so furiously fighting shit like DEI and victoriously cheering when some indie games refuse consultations, but whenever things like these happen they suddenly remember that fiction is a thing. Also I think we all knew that hoyo is pretty shallow when it comes to other cultures. At least myself as a Russian. Like why the fuck Tartaglias brother is called Teucer?? That's not even a Greek-inspired Russian name like Alexander, Viktor, Mikhail or Alexey. It's just straight up Greek. There's no doubt that Rus had a long story of cultural exchange with Greece after converting to Orthodox but not to the extent of having Greek names. It's as if they used some Chinese names for Inazuma characters
That's it,this was last nail in the coffin. I will stop spending a single dime into this game, and I won't refresh my welkin(or buy the bp) at 4.8(even though I'm a low spender and it doesn't make much difference) but it will change for me.I was doubting my spendings since 4.4,and personally i think I'm really late at this point. This game doesn't deserve a single dime from me at this point, it can't even do it's thing properly.
@@dreamsandhopes6802 well If that’s the case, I couldn’t agree more. The state of the game itself isn’t perfect, which is what people should judge a game by most. Sure, if the company was actually being racist and had slavery or something that would be bad. But people in the comments are throwing tantrums and it’s not really a big deal. Sorry I lumped you into my generalization
Even if we look at Genshin Impact as a completely fictional game that doesn't have any connection to the real world (which is just so stupid to begin with), I don't see people get so mad about players wanting more diversity in the game It's a GACHA GAME. Shouldn't players... actually want more types of diverse characters to collect Like, have we seen the NPC'S. They look SO FREAKING COOL. Why can't we have more playable characters who look that Why can't these fictional world have more diverse playable characters. Is there a rule in Teyvat that if you're darker than a paper bag, you're not allowed to have a vision Side note: HSR was so close to having a POC character in Aventurine. He's inspired by Romani people and is from a desert planet. He could have at least had a little tan to him :(
Skin color is culture. Very cool, westerners. In asians, culture is the culinary, dances, music/instruments, dresses, buildings, basically any products of human creativity that you can witness or engaging with.
I'm a black guy and i agree that this is a big issue, but the thing you need to remember is that hoyoverse is a chinese company. they prioritise the cn community first and foremost. they know very well that in china, people of colour aren't viewed in a good way, in fact a lot of people still have pretty racist views. it's only really the young people starting to accept more cultures and diversity in the country. the problem with releasing a broken character of colour is that they won't sell anywhere as well as a white character would. it's the sad reality unfortunately
Some Chinese and Japanese players are speaking out about this, and a petition was made to be submitted to a Cultural Ambassadors (the ambassadors are supposedly needed to take action against mihoyo). This whole thing has made so many racists come out the woodwork and it has reminded us how much gamers hate black people and POC. It’s truly a shame, and it’s weird that gaming correlates with racism so heavily. You got boys out here complaining about DEI and “the blacks” and “based China.” Trumpism really brought the racism to the forefront. It’s always been there, just hidden. Anyways, I doubt mihoyo will change unless those cultural ambassadors file legal action against them. I’m waiting for a studio to do a gacha game with actual beautiful black characters. Preferably not a western studio cause they’ll just make everything realistic and make the black women unattractive or manly. The western companies that cry about diversity and try to design black characters seem to perpetuate stereotypes in their designs. It’s wild. They don’t have actual black people on their teams either which is why many black male characters wear Killmonger haircut #75.
Hello Void! I am trying to make a youtube video about this subject and I am here to ask for you permission to take a few parts and remake them into my video. It would be greatly appreciated if you saw this message. Thank you.
I don’t like that Hoyo is doing this, but I understand why. A ton of their profits are coming from Asian countries like China. They’re making money because their characters are appealing to those in these countries. They don’t want to risk losing profits because a character didn’t adhere to an Asian beauty standard
it always happen mate hoyo with its disappointing update people losing their shit over anything , go on a full rant about mihoyo , scream on twitter , proceeds to spend all their money on the game , cry about the game not improving , cycle repeat itself
one thing that never made sense to me as someone who likes creating original characters....is their clear refusal of using darker skin colors. why? like, putting aside the "representation" for a bit, darker skin color is probably the easiest way to create variety, and make cool designs. example being those dark skin white haired characters you see often in anime- the white hair constrast the darker skin, which makes it look cool, compared if they also had pale skin (it would just blend together). like im no paragon in character design, but if im going to make a character from a specific culture, the first thing im doing is google how the people look like. excluding the people from their culture feels so wrong to me. and considering natlan and sumeru, i dont think its necessarily a "woke" thing to expect the people there to have a darker tan if theyre gonna live under the scorching sun.
I can understand what you are saying. If the main story is based on a true story, it's just a game and it's fictional. If you don't like it, just don't play it. And also, in Asian society, white skin tone is often preferred over other skin tones.
Im not even suprised on it after seeing how the Sumeru characters were i was not even angry just dissapointed (mainly bc Sumeru is insprised from Indian cultures and im Indian)
The thing that most of people don't understand, is that most of the players simply don't care. A lot of people don't care about skin tones of characters, representation and drama. They just enjoy the game as it is. And also, they will only care if Chinese players do something, so good luck convincing Chinese community that Natlan NEEDS to have some black characters
for this particular characters, THEY ALL NAMED AFTER GODS FROM DIFFERENT MYTHS, so based on how godhood works, their skin color doesnt matter. as long as they represent the culture , which is the main point of genshin, representing different cultures and adding fatasy to it. all is good. YEA IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE SOME DARKER CHARACTERS, BUT ITS NOT LIKE THOSE WHO DEMEND SKIN REPRESENTATION DO THE SAME REPRESENTATION TO ASIANS WHILE THEY ALSO USE THEIR CULTURE AND SUCH xDD so why ppl expect that another poc group will represent others when they dont get the same representation. its simple logic. so far hoyo did a great job representing out cultures, especilly middles eastren cultures: they made the most positive and beautiful representation of our culture with sumeru, unlike what westren media does and make our place always to be shown as poor and criminal. skin color means less than cultural representation , becuz our skin doesnt show anything about us except the amount of melanin.
I am sad about Dehya situation not because she was a "character of color" done dirty by Mihoyo, but because she was a cool and lovable character with great involvement in story and was done dirty by Mihoyo. And I have no problem with Natlan characters with "vision" being almost all "white" as long as Hoyo cares to explain why is that the case. And keep in mind: anime characters, while being drawn by Asians, a lot of times don't look Asian at all. Let that sink in. And I don't remember all that "progressive crowd" calling for boycott of Netflix for portraying the fantasy version Central Europe in Witcher series as an Los Angeles downtown with all those POC characters living a life as a typical 12th century European peasants. So just get a life, and touch some grass.
I feel like i should be offended because im black myself and there is no black characters in genshin other then Kaeya Pierro and Lansan who are close but not dark enough which makes me feel like hoyoverse is racist and should Do better on there skin colors and there race because it isn’t just that But also because my best friend says that Xilonen is supposed to be tan but they made her pale and that most of the people in Semeru should be darker and that and Inazuma is Japan but most of the Japanese people there are pale and the Chinese people are white and Mavuika is not black but she is Hispanic and that they should give her more Melanin I’m not saying they should blackwash some of the characters I’m saying they should just give them the right race
So, music, cuisine, mythology etc. isn't enough for «cultural representation»? Nope, let's woke about skin colour in a fantasy world. How about green or blue colour so, Wakanda lovers? And why only you worry about «skin colour»? How about ageism in Genshin (all playable characters look young), sexualisation of women, about people with physical disadvantages, body positive people? How about LBTQ+ people representation? I'm tired of woke propaganda. Don't like - don't use. Find another product. Or make your own. Don't make garbage from this one. And it's not about «skin colour» for me. It's about oppression because some dudes on Twitter dictate what should I like or dislike, what should I buy. Who will donate on such woke propaganda? Woke media products are economically inappropriate, because they are about anything but not about the storytelling, gameplay or somewhat that really matter.
Why are you the only smart person in the comments??? First of all, I’m a dark skinned south Asian and I couldn’t care less what colours the skin of the characters are. I think the world itself having variety that’s based on the real world is enough. All these idiots saying “that’s the last straw! I’m never playing this game again!” Are so stupid. Hoyo is a Chinese company too, meaning they have to keep their products somewhat nationalistic. The government would be upset if they put black characters in the game over Chinese characters. Woke propaganda?? Just say you detest anything where dark skin/black characters are represented. I bet you would not even touch a game that had a black character in it. Once again, the voice actors are ignored. Many of the vas are dark skin or some shade of it. Characters voiced by such people: Barbara, Lisa, Zhongli, Raiden Shogun, Nahida, Nilou, just of the top of my head. The game takes elements from the real world to make a fantasy world that has it's own laws (such as physics perhaps). So in a world that has it's own laws, people can live in hot areas without having to look like people from our world. Teyvat has it's own laws. People should engage in civil discussion. I agree.
This is totally the Hoyo problem, games like Dslyte and 1999 had darker skin characters. So I dont see why its not possible for darker skinned characters to not be in game. Its nothing woke or anything like that, Its totally fine if no one forces DEI. If they could represent china in Liyue so well then other countries represented can also be good or great. I understand its a fictional setting but it does have real life references, so I would like to assume its the Hoyo problem because games like Dslyte and 1999 can do it but Hoyo cant. But all is useless because CN just likes fair skinned characters, CN is just the whole thing that allows all this to happen, becausr last time a change happened because the CN players complained it to the CCP, so because they had a person thatis influenced by the CCP this company gets away with everything sadly.
It always amuses me how Americans and Europeans get "offended" by such a grave sin as misrepresenting African culture in a video game while at the same time american and european governments and companies suck most of the African countries dry of resources at the expense of local populace.

Its all about the money . Its a part of American self centered point of view and the attitude that whole world spins around US . Its not . Genshin is chinese game which earns most money in Asia , so characters are designed to be liked and adored in Asia . And the dark skin colour is not preffered in Asia as it comes from extense exposition to sunlight = physical labour = poverty . It comes from asian culture and life conditions and has nothing to do with racism . Do you want characters with all shades of skin colour ? Spend more money than Asians at the game and you will get it - simple , isnt it ?
There's a huge difference between darker skin from working outside and darker skin racially. Having a South American/African/Middle Eastern setting and only ever populating it with pale people does have a lot to do with race. Taking everything about a culture except the people is the definition of cultural appropriation. Also, your main point about about it being about the preference for lighter skin in Asia, not about race doesn't make any sense. Discriminating against darker people is colourism which is one of the forms racism comes in. It's what leads to the discrimination of entire groups of people. It starts with, "oh we just don't like people with a tan", then it goes to "Thai and Malaysian people are darker so they're inferior to Chinese", then "Africans people are really dark and we don't want to see them". Take a look at how they change movie posters etc, which have black characters to suit the Chinese audience. The Chinese versions remove them from posters and trailers. India even created an entire caste system over who was lighter and who was darker based on working outside, and that turned into a whole big racist mess. The whole working tan thing starts off as class discrimination, and quickly devolves to hatred of any darker skin colour regardless of social status. You don't seem malicious, but it seems you need to educate yourself of the subject to see what people are talking about.
@@ChallengerBanX Cultural appropiation is one of dumbest ideas even created :) According to cultural appropiation every person of colour should wear only the clothes and perform art and culture only from their native roots - everything else is cultural appropiation. @@millie567blackwashing is not a thing, call it something else. The reason whitewashing is a thing is because of the CENTURIES OF WHITEWASHING AND PREJUDICE against black people in real life. Wuwu so far hasn’t based any of the their world off real life regions of the world except for the China inspired area. So there isn’t really any issue yet. The issue with Genshin is that they’re taking inspiration from real life cultures and religions but leaving the people behind and putting them in white skin. That’s the problem
Riddle me this; where would the black people come from? Everything in Teyvat exists for a reason, so where would they even come from? The only actual race of dark skinned people even recorded were the Muratans and shortly after being released from slavery, they all disappeared. While I do not understand your argument here, one thing I do know is that it's far too late for such a drastic change.
It's actually not, people working in game design said skin color is a very easy change in model design and animation. Also based off most if not all Natlan character designs, it looks like the skin tone palette was darker and lightened last minute, you can tell by a lot of tattoo markings on multiple teaser characters. It's really not hard to see. So this is an easy fix that Hoyo can definitely do before release. Also, who are you to question representation. Two characters are based off of a Yoruba god and a Maori goddess and it's incredibly disrespectful to those real cultures and people to depict such characters as super whitewashed. If you can't understand that then I don't know what else to say other than do better
@@cia_ria You did not answer my question. Where would they come from? Why exactly are dark skinned characters appearing only now? Also, your argument about the two deites is invalid, as people have the tendency to depict the ones they worship as similar to themselves without any evidence of appearance.

@@feederico1011 THEN DON'T USE OUR CULTURE SIMPLE!(not yelling at you btw)
Well, that costs alot 😂
consider how large and how big their popularity, and their office is in their country, yeh it's a bad idea to have black characters. I mean, look at how chaotic and aggressive their fanbase is.
Ah yes. Hoyoverse doesn't want to stop catering to the people who pay them money.
TY for actually acknowledging That they are an Asian Company who sell to South East Asia. 😊
Genshin Impact has got to be the only game where it's fan attack you for actually asking for MORE varied character designs

Exactly, well said!
Simple as that.

What’s even worse is that it’s
Not even just that they’re NPCs but ENEMIES. Very telling.
@@atomicgrave4340 hoyo really had A+ skill for not listening to their fanbase. so this boycott can't really succeed judging from my experiences

Grow up
I wouldn't worry about it too much.
Like seriously what stopped them from making them at least a little more tan that the characters from other Nations???
cmon, it’s inspired and the Chinese community can be toxic about it, they have a obsession towards white skin.

The only people who say, "Representation doesn't matter" are the kind of people who are constantly represented in media. Great video btw
It's understandable for Mavuika since they don't want to change their legacy character (Himeko)
As for the rest, their skin tone are most likely based on the temperature of the place they reside in. From what we've seen, a huge chunk of the land are quite lush, which explains why most of them are not dark skinned, but rather more tanned instead. Although we did see a volcanic area during the first sneek peak from 2 months ago. So far, Iansan is the only true dark skinned character.
But there's still a possibility that they will release more dark skinned characters as there are always at least 3 characters who are not present in the initial trailer that becomes playable:
Inazuma - Ayato, Kuki Shinobu, Heizou
Sumeru - Candace, Layla, Faruzan, Kaveh
Fontaine - Chevreuse, Chiori, Emilie
But in my opinion, the real reason is that they're waiting for Iansan's sale to see whether or not people will choose to pull for dark skinned character in the first place.

Also I think we all knew that hoyo is pretty shallow when it comes to other cultures. At least myself as a Russian. Like why the fuck Tartaglias brother is called Teucer?? That's not even a Greek-inspired Russian name like Alexander, Viktor, Mikhail or Alexey. It's just straight up Greek. There's no doubt that Rus had a long story of cultural exchange with Greece after converting to Orthodox but not to the extent of having Greek names. It's as if they used some Chinese names for Inazuma characters

It’s wild. They don’t have actual black people on their teams either which is why many black male characters wear Killmonger haircut #75.

one thing that never made sense to me as someone who likes creating original characters....is their clear refusal of using darker skin colors. why? like, putting aside the "representation" for a bit, darker skin color is probably the easiest way to create variety, and make cool designs. example being those dark skin white haired characters you see often in anime- the white hair constrast the darker skin, which makes it look cool, compared if they also had pale skin (it would just blend together). like im no paragon in character design, but if im going to make a character from a specific culture, the first thing im doing is google how the people look like. excluding the people from their culture feels so wrong to me. and considering natlan and sumeru, i dont think its necessarily a "woke" thing to expect the people there to have a darker tan if theyre gonna live under the scorching sun.
The fact most players be like we are overdramatic for complaining or being upset from us changing the skin of those meant to be darker characters. 🙂

To be fair hoyo works with black people, just because they haven't used a little darker skin tones doesn't mean they are racist
for this particular characters, THEY ALL NAMED AFTER GODS FROM DIFFERENT MYTHS, so based on how godhood works, their skin color doesnt matter. as long as they represent the culture , which is the main point of genshin, representing different cultures and adding fatasy to it. all is good.

But also because my best friend says that Xilonen is supposed to be tan but they made her pale and that most of the people in Semeru should be darker and that and Inazuma is Japan but most of the Japanese people there are pale and the Chinese people are white and Mavuika is not black but she is Hispanic and that they should give her more Melanin I’m not saying they should blackwash some of the characters I’m saying they should just give them the right race

SJW and DEI? 😂😂😂😂
@@ChallengerBanX Cultural appropiation is one of dumbest ideas even created :)
According to cultural appropiation every person of colour should wear only the clothes and perform art and culture only from their native roots - everything else is cultural appropiation.
Instead of fighting with fictional world of Genshin you should commit to fight with for e.g. Netflix's historical documental bias - Cleopatra as its show Cleopatra as a black woman which is a historical lie and it really may be find offending by Persians and Egyptians as falsyfing their history .
Imagine that:

...And they even did it to a (supposedly) documentary movie: African Queens: Queen Cleopatra and also tried to force a series about Japanese samurai to have a black character -_-
@@millie567blackwashing is not a thing, call it something else. The reason whitewashing is a thing is because of the CENTURIES OF WHITEWASHING AND PREJUDICE against black people in real life. Cuz he have a point, what genshin it's doing is cultural appropriation, and we have the right and the duty of talking about it. Latin people got enough stolen from them already.
Cause we play them all, you don't have a monopoly on who comments on Genshin
