Seeing Van's breakdown was really raw and difficult because I've been there before. The urge to just close your eyes while driving, running away to escape your life and problems, and then finally waking up from a dissociative state back to reality. For those who have experienced this type of depression, its painfully real. I hope in the next season we get to see her getting the help and support she needs
No one has mentioned this so I guess I will. The thing about this Season that I really enjoyed is seeing Black people traveling and having adventures in Europe. Seeing our wonderful BLACK protagonists navigate foreign cities, outside of American culture. From 2014 to 2019 I was teaching university students English in Istanbul, Budapest and then Prague, and it was always a joy to run into Brothas and Sistas backpacking through those cities and connect, compare notes, or just kick it. Its very important that African Americans experience life abroad if even for a short stint. I love seeing our Black people OUTSIDE the U.S. and I hope this season inspires many of us to start exploring overseas as well.
Hey where did you worked at Istanbul? If you wanna share of course, I'm from Turkey I'm studying French Language and Literature. I'm interested I'd like to hear your experiences as a teacher
I wasnt too impressed with the London episode, considering there werent many black characters from London in that episode and the whole episode is set in a dude's big house. I'm from London myself, so I was looking forward to some hijinks in areas that I would recognise and some cultural references that the characters wouldnt understand.
@@owenleal Yes, that would have been great too. To be fair, this was filmed during the Pandemic, so I think a lot of stories and character development got short shrift.

according to the timeline. Van implied she doesn't know how long she been in Paris. She assumed it was a few weeks. But it's heavily implied it's been over 6 months if we counted how long the bread got hard, the fact she was a cover girl for a magazine, she's notorious in a certain hood, and her relations with many people. It could be a full year if we based it off the Paperboi poster. The after credit scene, it's strongly implied that Earn was already BACK in Atlanta. The guy who brought him the luggage spoke in an American accent and the decorum of the hotel is the same as the episode where White Earn killed himself. It is possible that the after credit scene is the EARLIEST part of the timeline before they flew back to Europe which would explain the dream Earn had with White Earn in the beginning because of seeing the photo. Just a theory.
Explain the part where you say “before they flew back to Europe.” Are you saying that they flew to Europe the first time, came back to Atlanta and then flew out to Europe again?
@@SandyBenjamin yea, remember when the show promoter asks Earn if it was their first time in Amsterdam? Earns tells him no and that they had done a smaller venue there before, so yea this is there second time touring in Europe. Not to mention, they were with Clark County when they first left for Europe. So if it was their first time still, Clark County would still be a part of the show but he’s not so that also tells you that it’s not their first Europe tour
@@eski_truv oh yeah thats right. They skipped showing the journey of the first year, thats why we dont see Clark County now cause Paper Boi leveled up and became a headliner. I totally missed that watching it the first time.
Your comment makes me think that White Earn's last name was also Marks. The bag was for white Earn but black Earn was summoned to collect it by mistake. They were both staying at the same hotel.
When I was in my early 20s I dated a girl with a kid. She was extremely successful in her career after she graduated college(she was an actuary) but she constantly struggled with her identity of being a mom and wanting her own life. She hated the questions she was asked because people knew she had a son so she never really told people about him until she was close with them. Seeing Vans breakdown reminded me of my exes struggles so it honestly made me really emotional last night. Im not sure how many parents have a crisis like this but I’d imagine my ex isn’t alone.
I have had the same experience, I have come to the conclusion that most woman in that circumstance can not ever let go the trauma of being left alone as a single parent. The ones that can are very far in between, and even then the break down happens more slowly, only rearing it’s head at tell end of parenting. It makes real relationships very hard to gain.
I think Van cutting Candice’s access to her room isn’t about anything in the room per se, but more about Van brushing off Candice’s attempts to ask what changed, she’s ‘keeping her out of her private space’ physically as well as in their friendship
I was so excited for this breakdown. Your channel is small but you’ve had by far the most enjoyable analysis videos I’ve seen on this season of Atlanta. From the editing to the commentary, everything is awesome. I hope you branch out and keep going.
Van’s whole arc just really started back in season 1 when you think about it…just the whole thing with bailing earn out and already feeling like a single parent while earn gets to follow his dreams, then the whole shit with her friend and knowing what her Value is…your friend out here traveling the world and living her life, while again…you have to be the responsible one. For the longest time Van had no identity but her character and personality was the typical one but not the one the people wanted for her and in character, didn’t want for herself. Just being the responsible one that is Lotties mom…so season 3 was definitely that point where it was something she had to do for herself. She was someone other than the responsible one who was Lotties mom, she just let go…she just want too far and got lost again.
Good job on this season! I think the timeline is significant because I was confused as to how Van had accomplished such notoriety, in another country, in a couple of weeks. Also, one thing I loved about the kitchen shot is how we saw carrots hanging up and being cooked until Van snapped out of it, the carrots turned into hands.
For the hands,it might refer to the colonial times in Congo when the colonizers cut hands of africans while calling them savages and canibals, just a thought. The whole season is about "the white man's burden" hence the reference to the shining at the end(the scenes in the hotel in ep 4 also refer to Jack talking to ghosts in the bar of the overlook).
I was so glad they did this episode. I never really liked Van much before. She always felt like a character who only existed in relation to other characters, emotionally unavailable, mentally inscrutable. Frequently antagonistic, entitled, and unreasonable without giving much time or sympathetic framing to her experience. In fact, I sometimes felt the writing had let the character down and she was just there to be a pretty hoop Earn had to jump through, the way a lot of female characters are in shows written by men. Dealing with her as a person in her own right without making it about Earn was the best thing for her.
It's not just Al, but EVERYONE in the main crew is shown prominently eating... except Earn! I haven't figured out the significance of it just yet but it does seem like a symbolic setup for the final season. Earn has mostly been selfless this season, holding everything together and sacrificing for the gang so that feels like a thematic setup for later. Everyone else is wandering and soul-searching in some way except him, he just has his shit together (unlike Wiley lol). EDIT: Here's the hunger thing along with the running ghost theme of the season-pretas: Hungry ghost is a concept in Buddhism, and Chinese traditional religion, representing beings who are driven by intense emotional needs in an animalistic way. The terms 餓鬼 èguǐ literally "hungry ghost", are the Chinese translation of the term preta in Buddhism.
Would it be fair to say that Earn was soul searching in the previous seasons while everyone else seemed "together"? Earn was the outsider and least comfortable of all the characters constantly being reminded of what he lacked and couldn't do...criticism from AL about not being a good manager, criticism from his parents for leaving school, and criticism from Van about not being a good partner/Dad. Earn not eating could be the representation of "hunger" that comes with ambition. Not sleeping, not tiring, and always ready....just my two cents lol
Your breakdown of Van’s breakdown and you getting into how important mental health is, also how the black community doesn’t always take mental health seriously was just beautiful. This is my favorite episode of Atlanta. Your channel makes me happy.

Was waiting, and waiting... for the last one lol. It's all good, as a creator I understand. Congrats on a great season review. As a p.s., in my boredom I've gone back and started rewatching the whole show. I have to say that Donald Glover is overly smart. There's an easter egg in the first 3 minutes of the 1st SHOW that connects to all the water stuff happening in season 3. Crazy!
I’m so glad to see this video! It’s also cool to actually see your face, and to hear that you took the time you needed for your mental health. This analysis is really helpful in trying to break down the timeline of the season because I really had nowhere to even start with it. I think there can be a lot of significance to the hands as the specific part of the body these dinner party folks are cannibalizing. Hands tend to symbolize the deeds of a person. In ancient Mesopotamia, Hammurabi made it law that the punishment for theft was having one’s hand cut off. I think there’s some cross-reference of this in the Bible, and doesn’t Jesus at some point say it’s better to cut off your hand than to commit a sin with it? Maybe the hands these crazy people are cooking up and eating were chopped off of people who tried to screw over the black market folks or some mafia gang or whatever. The other thing that really stood out to me in this episode is the title. Tarrare had a condition that gave him an insatiable hunger. A hunger so intense that he basically sacrificed his humanity for it, and endangered others. I think there’s some commentary being made throughout the episode about hungers. Like, Candice is getting to sate her hunger for the finer things by doing something that could arguably be considered dehumanizing to another person. I’d argue Candice’s sponsor has an insatiable hunger for Black women, and so does the guy Van planted crack on. Both are willing and excited to debase themselves and be humiliated to sate their desires. This kind of fetishization of Black women has been present in white men for ages, and it almost always goes to some weird ass places. Like, white men almost can’t be satisfied with just loving or having sex with Black women. They have to find some way to consume us, absorb us. Candice’s sponsor has a hunger so deep it doesn’t even matter if it’s her who meets his need - any Black woman will do. None of these white men Van is messing with could possibly by her fake Amelie schtick, but it doesn’t matter as long as they get a “taste” of her. It’s also interesting that ALL the people who call Van out on her behavior are Black. The gang kids at the projects call her Tarrare to her face, and it’s almost like they’re saying “Your hunger is insatiable.” And it is. Van is hungry for escape. A new life, adventure, excitement. And she does dehumanize herself to get it. She hurts people to fulfill her own needs, and it’s obviously not at all who she really is. And the rest of the gang is hungry too: Darius is constantly craving new experiences and adventure, Al is hungry for fame and excess, Earn is hungry for legitimacy and respect. This episode was a lot but I loved it and I can’t wait to see where Season 4 goes in terms of tying this all together. Or not, because Atlanta really dgaf what we think 😂
I been loving Atlanta for a long time now. It's some of the greatest writing in any current medium, and your analysis is always great and thought provoking. This bread is hard af
Perhaps the hotel we see for final scene is on the U.S east coast somewhere. The crew first stopped in layover/on way to Europe to start this tour. Then white earn, leaving his bag at the airport, committed suicide some time later at the same hotel. The guys land back in U.S after tour, and Earn gets white earns bag. They mentioned there was a lot of suicides happening, so it's totally possible it was not tracked down or put together. And that would kind of make sense how the bag was thought to be Earn's. The fact they share the same name is great. The deliberate vagueness is the best. I love the implications it suggests and the surrealism of this show is so well done. The blurred lines of subjective reality is so accurate to the individual experience we each have while sharing existence with each other. This show requires active viewers. Thanks for all your hard work; these videos about Atlanta are really a cut above. You really research and dive into themes, subtext, and perspectives. I feel like I appreciate the show that much more when I learn others thoughts and reactions. I don't think I've ever read as many comments on a video series as I have on this series! Quality is worth the wait!! I would be thrilled if you covered the next season!
I think your timeline is a bit off. The season starts in Amsterdam around December. People wearing the blackface is a Christmas time thing. Van arrived in December. I think she says she was driving in Atlanta a few weeks ago because in her mind it has only been a few weeks because she has lost her sense of time during her nervous breakdown. She doesn't know what the date is when she's talking to Candice. But like you said the timeline doesn't really matter.
exactly and in the museum scene when she talks about how long it takes for the baguette to harden, she alludes to the bread being out for 6months meaning she would have to have been there just as long if not longer.
This bread is hard because you can use this firm baguette 🥖 of a review to slay every other TH-camr’s analysis of Atlanta! You’re a collaborative genius and you deserve 100k subscribers. Re: mental health in this episode, white Earn lost his bag which had medication in it- if he had his meds, would that have kept him from shooting himself next to the pool? More importantly; “dissociative fugue presents as sudden, unexpected travel away from one’s home with an inability to recall some or all of one’s past. Onset is sudden, usually following severe psychosocial stressors. This state usually lasts for minutes to days “. I believe Van was in a fugue state and didn’t snap out of it until Candice brought up Lottie. Agree with you re Dave episode with hands and the end of The Shining. This video was well worth the wait. Imma try to find your Discord cuz u b intelligent and shit. ❤️ One of your biggest fans.

Job well done 🥖🥖🥖. I enjoyed all of your videos boo. I hate to hear that this episode was the least watched! This was by far the funniest for me and I love that she got her own episode! Def a weird ending for the season though.
I saw a comment on another video, which was really revealing in general, but also about van where they said that it’s common for women to feel like this after they have kids. They had given up part of their individuality when they become a ‘wife’ or ‘someone’s girlfriend’. Then again when they have a child as their life revolves around tending to someone else, they become secondary. Almost like an identity crisis where they want to run away. You can see this in vans story and it’s very telling, especially with her being a young mother and only ever presented as earn’s partner.
i didn´t know about the after credits scene wow, thank you. I'm from Spain and I would have loved to the gang come over here in the tour hahahahah I really enjoyed your videos, this season was fuckin crazy

Hands being eaten. Bite the hand that feeds. Feed the mouth that bites. Sounds like the kinda dumb pun dreamt up by a guy who calls his character Earn. Staff of life, etc. The travelling party is eating their cake and having it..

One thing about the timeline, Van arrived on Dec. 2. You can tell by the text that Earn gets in Episode two. The date is Dec 2 when Van tells him to pick her up.
Some good notes. The photo at the end was def like the Shining. I’m assuming you’ve seen Room 237 but if you haven’t it seems like it and the Shining have informed the whole season as well as the Teddy Perkins ep.

Great analysis.
*3:20** mark*
Me: “vans acting like a crack head”
*5:20** mark*
Nine: “Van whips out crack”
I KNEW IT 💀
When she says she closed her eyes while driving it calls back to the end of the first episode when the woman closes her eyes and drives off the road.
thank you for expressing need in mental health personally and everyone.
"business drip" lmaoo 1:20
I been loving Atlanta for a long time now. It's some of the greatest writing in any current medium, and your analysis is always great and thought provoking.
This bread is hard af
I really hope the writers of atlanta see your vids bro. You really did great analysis!
This bread is hard son!
Much gratitude because I did not get this episode at all and I was pissed but now Imma watch it again.
You should do a break down on “Sorry to bother you”
I love your channel it’s been crazy watching how fast the quality and your channel has grown
Damnn thank you!
And spot on about the medication theory and the fugue state.
You do wonderful work! Please continue and never ceded apologize for putting your health first
I'm a Chicago Local and have been very happy with your reviews of this season, great work, love your commentary! This season was a smash hit, so different, so interesting, so original, I cannot get enough, wish there was more content like this.
Thank you!
Glad you took a much needed rest to give us this fire breakdown. I am gonna miss these videos for this season 3 & this definitely my favorite season of Atlanta so i'm already looking forward for season 4!
“Yeah we’re just sending Zimbabwean kids to school”…music to my ears 👍🏾
I was getting worried, so glad that you’re back for the finale
Job well done 🥖🥖🥖. I enjoyed all of your videos boo.
I hate to hear that this episode was the least watched! This was by far the funniest for me and I love that she got her own episode! Def a weird ending for the season though.
Yeah this was a very interesting season, still kinda sad we didn't get to have a Darius episode but satisfied either way
Literally waited from watching any other channels analysis for you to return! 😁
Hardddd🥖 stay up King. 🙌🏽
As much as I love this show I can’t lie I rolled my eyes HARD at the hand reaction
right!! i was like they didn’t bite into any bones?? they didn’t feel the fingers?😂😂
Lol damn never even thought about how many bones they would have been chewing up 🤌🏾
I saw a comment on another video, which was really revealing in general, but also about van where they said that it’s common for women to feel like this after they have kids.
This bread is hard!!! Good job homie.
Glad to put a face to the voice!
I’ve watched ALL of these videos after the episodes and I’ve been waiting for THIS one! This is solid content and hopefully Donald at some point sees them
Truly appreciate your time for breaking this amazing show down.
😅 Zazie's french is very good tho ! 👍
Late to the party...but was sick all week and binged watched Atlanta Season 3. It was incredible and I must say your series breaking down each episode made me appreciate the season 10x more! Truly excellent work!
This is why you’re the GOAT! The detail is NEXT LEVEL
Hands being eaten. Bite the hand that feeds. Feed the mouth that bites. Sounds like the kinda dumb pun dreamt up by a guy who calls his character Earn. Staff of life, etc. The travelling party is eating their cake and having it..
"AT LEAAAAST" 🎶 !!! 😭😅
Jk , I know it's a looot of work so ..
Merci merci ! 👌🏽💯
followed your Twitter to wait for this video & it finally dropped. 🔥🔥🔥
Dealing with mental health and knowing that’s a huge topic of this episode must have been hard . You had every right to take a break, you still made an amazing video as usual
YESSSSS!! This was fantastic!! Perfect breakdown. The wait was worth it.
This was very much worth the weight. The bread was extra hard. As a mom, this episode hit me places I didn’t like but I LOVED this episode and season overall. Love your videos!
One thing about the timeline, Van arrived on Dec. 2. You can tell by the text that Earn gets in Episode two. The date is Dec 2 when Van tells him to pick her up.
I’ve been kicking my self for not putting in that obvious one.
Keep doing what you do. These videos made waiting for each episode a bit more bearable. Continued success to you.
Didn't know there was a new Candyman. Watching that next lol
edit: this bread is hard :)
It's amazing, definitely watch the end credits, it's a shadow puppet show that reveals A LOT. Enjoy
@@zod4365 Will do! Thanks :)
@@adamrassi3516 oh! Just to clarify, it's the RECENT Candyman, there were older "sequels" made prior.
@@zod4365 for sure. The 2021 one is the one I'm watching. Saw the original too. Not the sequels to that one though
Well worth the wait. This bread is hard lol
21:35 Well worth the wait! Your videos have been so enlightening and FUN 🎉
Some good notes. The photo at the end was def like the Shining. I’m assuming you’ve seen Room 237 but if you haven’t it seems like it and the Shining have informed the whole season as well as the Teddy Perkins ep.
Great job and good on you for recognizing you need a break and taking it!!
I'm late but this is a great analysis. I'm binging your Atlanta videos and they're all great
The horrible acting when they realised they were eating hands was perfect. I rewinded that part half a dozen times. 😹
Your hard work has been greatly appreciated! love from the UK
This episode is amazing, we needed an episode where we understand van and we got that, idk why people haven’t enjoyed s3 and s4 as much
In honor of les mains 14:24 might be a connection to the reason why they’re eating hands. It’s a nail salon in Buckhead Atlanta?
Great content Man!! I am starting to think that season 3 is like the Kendrick Lamar "Damn" Album where you can watch the episodes from 10 to 1 to get more clues about the plot.
you are a bloody genius mate
solid episode the ending felt like the end of J Coles album when he shouted out all the people he knew and supported the album on Forest Hills Drive niceeeee ending !
It felt like an end of an album.
You're doing the lords work 🙏🏾 this is exactly what I needed when I was looking for an Atlanta breakdown 👏🏾👏🏾🔥🔥
Dude definitely had a humiliation kink
Gonna miss ur videos😩
You don’t have to. I’ll still be dropping videos. Stay tuned.
I swear, without videos like this I'd go crazy trynna makes since of it
Love your videos; I'm inspired to go back and binge watch all 3 seasons!!
Thank YOU for putting these videos together my boy. Very much appreciated !! S/o to the peeps on your discord too. Take care.
Your videos for season 3 have been fantastic 👏👏 every time I finish an episode, I head straight to your channel for your insights and deciphering all of the craziness. Thank you!
Broooo...i hate NOT watching youtube videos on my apple tv but after watching your videos i HAD to go on my computer, in order to let you know how great your atl analysis videos are.
