      I think it was a compliment. I’m just building my run and came here to learn a few things. I find your little chicken yard very cute. I’m gonna get some of those colorful plastic chairs

    A couple of things I've found: One, for leaves, etc. I use a cordless (what I have) blower the just blow from the inside to get any trash/leaves off! As to birds I DON'T want to hurt, I simply hang a few strips of colorful strips (I have hot pink marking tape for trees, etc., like surveyors use) and simply put a few ties of that along here and there to warn other birds to stay clear.

    You might have wild birds fly into your netting and getting tangled. It’s happened to a golf driving range that has a net system to keep some abutters safe. A few strands of white fabric tied to the netting will make it more visible to fast flying doves etc:

      You know I’ve wondered about that. I’ll see if we can get that done asap. Thanks!

    Got my netting yesterday. I'm getting ready to put the chicks out. It's warm enough but they're small still. I will sit with them regardless. Thanks for the video!

      @realsimplemama  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you’re welcome! I always loved taking my little fluffs out for field trips. Definitely keep an eye on them! They will also start to alert you two possible places that you need to reinforce, potential dangers or things that could snag them, all kinds of stuff like that so it is good to give them trial runs while you were paying attention

    If you live near Castroville, I'll gladly take those "stupid railroad ties" for some of my projects. I recently bought a 50×100' bird net for my run 72'×20' from Amazon for about $53. I have 2 acres, but I am wanting to prevent my chickens from leaving the run and free ranging, because my chickens & ducks think my neighbors are part of their territory too. I also recently had a falcon attempt to snatch younger poults but thankfully they were in their wired pen. I will be putting my netting up as soon as this drizzle rain eases. I still have a few small hackberry trees to take down first which are growing too close to the house and coop. Hackberries...ugh.

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha! I have hackberries growing right against the fence too! They are so persistent in annoying me. I understand your frustration! And I’m in San Antonio ✌🏻❤️🐓 sounds like you have really good plans to keep your flock safe.

    Ide be concerned about some birds getting through, I used blueberry netting, unfortunately mine didn't come all the way but I have a big umbrella there, I'm only now 4'11 so I don't really need to put higher, yours looks great though. A hawk can pick up those chickens wout a doubt, I live in Maine & have lost 3 cats to bird of prey big cats too

    Fantastic!! You guys do great work! Lucky girls! I wanted to let you know we have elephant ears and the ladies just walk by them.
    I give them kale regularly, sometimes hand fed, while sitting in my chair. They go gag-ga over it. They sometimes jump in my lap for it.
    I love love love my chickens!!!

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh that’s so cute!
      And I may do elephant ears eventually, once they have a ton more choices, and that way the “new guy” plants would be ignored anyway.

    Hi there! I was wondering if you lock up the chickens in their coop every night ?

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hi! Yes I do. They’re locked up into the entire coop, but not locked up just upstairs if that makes sense. So they can come down on their own as the ramp stays open and I have backup food and water there for them. ✌🏻❤️🐓

      Lol! We did open it up inside in a big space (even garage is better than outside BECAUSE STICKS) and wrapped it up. Think of a sailor having big loops of material over one shoulder. That was me. 😁😁😁 for us, the big thing was keeping the excess from dragging the ground because then all kinds of crap gets stuck in it! ✌🏻❤️🐓

    I'm really glad to find your video, thank you! I have a similar location for my girls; and actually want to include three small (ornamental) trees in my enclosure. I envisioned creating a "tent" using the bird netting ~ attaching it to the walls of the enclosure and then having three tall posts in the centre. But there is a line of maple trees adjacent to the enclosure (and I live in Nova Scotia where we have snow all winter) and I'm wondering how your netting held up with the weight of falling leaves (and snow if you get any). Or are the holes big enough that the leaves will actually fall right through. Thanks kindly!

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! So you’re right in that I wouldn’t use the ornamental trees and their canopy to hold up the netting. Unless the maple leaves are really huge the leaves will fall through. I believe this netting is 2” square and we have ash trees around but very rarely does a small branch get stuck. The problem is that if you get netting with huge openings, more predators can potentially get through. We did have a terrible snowstorm here in February and I had no issues! But check the dimensions and see if you could get a tarp at an angle on top of the netting, or think of a strategy to get larger leaves off as this will be a potential issue. I hope that makes sense!

  • @animallivesmatter7483
    @animallivesmatter7483 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That was helpful. I am figuring out how to hold up the chicken wire so I can walk freely under it without having to bend at all. I am using the wire 72"x150' so the squirels don't get tangled up in it. I don't even want to try and untangle a freaked out squirel they bite too hard!.
    So did you have any problems with the netting? I see it has been a couple of years now

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Honestly no. The netting has been annoying for a few reasons, mostly trees trying to grow through and stuff getting caught in it like branches after a storm. But otherwise it does the job well! ✌🏻❤️🐓

    What about cats? Will that keep them out? That's our biggest issue in my current space - the stray cats.

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically it’s only about 3” square openings. But it’s nylon, so if someone is really intent on ripping/chewing it up they can get in. I would guess if you affix it really tightly to the fence, and you monitor it on the regular to be sure it’s not tearing or getting messed with, a grown cat can’t fit.

    Hey I like your chicken coop what is the name of it and how many chickens do it hold ?

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! I have a “Chicken Coop and Run” playlist here on TH-cam which has my full review, both of the bird netting (Amazon) and the coop which is called the Omaha model by the Rugged Ranch brand. Look locally and see if you can find it somewhere like a pawn shop, etc. I got lucky with mine and it’s the best coop kit I’ve ever had! If you have regular sized chickens, and they have a “yard” for the daytime, I’d say it easily holds 7-8. ✌🏻❤️🐓

    What did you say your run fencing was made of? I think I must have missed that. I'm thinking about extending my run, or either making a chicken wire tunnel for my ladies to free range in so just trying to decide options.

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use rabbit wire for the outside, and hardware cloth for the coop itself.

    Where is your gate? How did you get in and out?

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I have a rabbit wire gate that I use to get in and out. It has hooks at the top and bottom and has been effective in keeping my dogs out. The bird netting is above that and attached to the top of the rabbit wire walls so it doesn’t move as the gate opens and closes. If you want to see you can go to my “Chicken Coop and Run” playlist and see us building it/setting it up from early 2020.

    Hi just wondering .. can the fox access the run from above roof netting ? what if a fox manages to jump over the wooden fence and get caught in the mesh net , will it break the netting ?

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm. I wouldn’t think so. This is nylon so it’s designed for wear and tear, sun exposure, etc. I definitely can’t easily rip through it with my hands. I’ve never had an animal caught up in the netting but that would be the more likely case, in my opinion. ✌🏻❤️🐓

      Hi! I got it on Amazon but you want to check the materials and sizing. This is what I used: If you have #backyardchickens you should make a bird netting cover. It protects them and keeps them safe! Here’s all about how (and why) we did it. realsimplemama.com/bird-netting-for-your-chicken-run-why-you-want-it-and-how-to-do-it/
