I totally agree with bird netting. I've been using the string netting type and it's held up for 3 years so far, even with a tree falling on it. It's kept my girls in and protected them from several hawk attacks. It's easy to repair if it does get a hole in it. (I just use a tiny zip tie) The only downside is it's a pain in the ass to work with. It loves to tangle and snag on everything
Yes! Totally agree! It had better last for years because you’re right, it catches on every little thing on the ground as we go (even with me carrying excess over my shoulder). We’ve had to repair snags too from crazy storms but I’ll never go without it again.
Vanessa here👋 Great advice! I lost 5 pullets to a chicken hawk a few months ago. They are all netted up now😉 your set up also gave me the idea of Rosemary Organo, thyme, and chili peppers around the run
Yay for plants! My chili pequin has been blooming and I’m so excited! And I’m so sorry for the loss of the little ones but glad that you were able to upgrade. ✌🏼❤️🐓
Do you clip one wing or both? Legit question as I’m new to chickens but I’ve had large parrots most of my life. I only clip one wing on my Amazon parrot which gives no lift and only creates a circular motion if flying from an elevated position. My chicks are three weeks old and I’m trying to gather as much information as I can. I’m enjoying your videos. This is my first one and I’ll be subscribing and going back through your playlist!
Hi! Thanks so much! I agree with you, I only find it necessary to clip one. They can still “fall with style” but it won’t be significant enough to go far!
Can’t the little swallows get in through your fencing? We have netting on top of the run and chain link fencing. We keep getting little swallows inside and they eat the food.
I must get me some Netting, AND clip the wings. My hens, if they wanted to can easily jump on top of the coop and then onto the garage roof if they really wanted to. I havent had that problem yet, but I would rather be ahead of the game, then find out the hard way
Yes! All it takes for one adventurous, curious hen to figure it out and the others learn by example quickly. (And all flocks have that one hen…) ✌🏼❤️🐓 I do have a video on how to clip wings, it’s easier if you have a helper but it is quick and easy, and only once a year! ✌🏼❤️🐓

Technically they could get in. But I have the food within the run, and then within the coop - and that’s hardware cloth so no birds!
@real simple mama I have bird netting across our whole 1000 sq ft run. Swallows do get in but the roo boys chase them off.
Does heavy rain or hail impact the bird netting?
Nope! Just debris like big tree branches.
A magpie took my polish chicken last week.
I’m so sorry to hear that. ✌🏼❤️🐓
@@realsimplemama Thank you ❤️ 😢
