Kristen will always be the best but I’m actually a fan of how Jenni Barber did it!! I think there’s something in her voice that’s so unique for the character! Her facials crack me up too 😂
I love how in the Brazilian version the "were... are" part wouldn't fit so they changed Glinda's line to something like "you need to celebrate the blessings that life gave you... me." and it cracks me up
Fabi Bang (Brazil Glinda) managed to be more unhinged in the recent non-replica of Wicked from last year. From doing "Desafio da Cuca" towards the climax of the song, to several references to the then-recent _Barbie_ movie.
@@sorrynotsorry6there was another one of these in australia recently! I think you should find a video of it bc it was NEARLY acurate by the first musical 😅
It’s interesting that Australia and the UK went completely different directions with the accents. The Australian Galindas put on an American accent, but the British Galindas have an exaggerated posh accent! Like, the UK production adapted the characterization so that Galinda’s accent was a local shorthand for understanding her wealthy background, which is cool and I don’t see done much in Broadway-to-West End transfers nowadays.
Totally agreed. I regularly come and watch her performance. I guess that may be because my first broadway wicked Glinda cast was Ali? but shes the best too.
I love how the Brazilian performance ends with the audience member shrieking at 18:02, you can tell she loved the performance haha I think fabi bang's version is my favourite for the energy alone
Fabi Bang is amazing! I guess only Brazilians can catch all the layers in Fabi's performance. There is a version of popular from July 2023 (a non-official version) that is everything. If you want to have a look th-cam.com/video/UY5jeLpe-Z8/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=PortalFama
Megan Hilty’s voice is AMAZING. I don’t think non-singers realise how hard those transitions from belt to very breathy, high nasal singing are, and she makes it look EFFORTLESS
They're all great and it's nice to see how they each put their own spin on it (of course Kristin is a classic) but I really liked how Lucy Durack does "I know about popular" (9:28) because it's more...heartfelt? Like she's actually trying to reassure Elphaba since she knows she'll be feeling uneasy about all this. She also had my favorite "lar". 😂 ~:~
Ali Mauzey is really good- her voice isn’t overly annoying and tinny, and she has a wonderful understanding of the comic personality of the character. very lovely to watch and listen to.
I once saw a theatre kids video on youtube where he said the reason they don't always cut the lace off wigs in theatre is cause they assume with the theatre lights on that people won't be able to see it in the crowd but if you're in the front few rows or there is going to be cameras recording the performance up close you can definitely tell so it's way better to just take the time to trim the lace off.
It's always interesting how differently characters can be portrayed and still be good each time. I think the different actresses/actors changing up the character is what keeps the show from getting boring if you were see them several times. Some people complain that it's different but I absolutely love it!
I think what Makes Kristin the best Galinda is she has always been a sensational comic actress. Others may sing it as well or possibly better, but the timing that Popular takes is everything and Kristin has it.
i don’t think anyone could ever beat kristen, i think she could still play that part perfectly to this day, the mannerisms and everything are just so perfect 🤣
I love the Korean versions though I’m curious as to how it’s translated and what lyrics might be different in another language as compared to translating it one for one. Like in the Korean versions the “right now” instead of “instead of dreary who you were, well are”
The literal translation is “Popular, because of me you’ll be popular. Let’s make lots good (status) friends and some new slang. Let’s start as soon as possible ‘cause we’ve got a long road to go. Please don’t feel bad about my honest analysis and advice and just follow along. I’ve decided that I wanna be your friend. There’s no one like me anywhere. I major in popular, I minor in popular. I’ll make you forget your dark and dreary past right now! With my help, you’re now popular”
In songs the lyrics' syllables and how they fit into the melody is especially important in the Korean language because our pronunciation and writing system focuses a lot on splitting up syllables.(But in general lyric translations for performances can never be one on one accurate lol)Also it is common in korean musicals to incorporate new english lyrics into the translated versions for a smoother representation of the original!
I appreciate the different languages, but specifically hearing British Glinda breaks my brain 😂 I’m so used to her sounding like a stereotypical valley girl
I saw Wicked twice on Broadway: 2018 and 2021. I really liked the high-pitched hilarity of Glenda in the 2018 version. 2021 version wasn't bad. She just wasn't as outrageous.
Comparing the English and non-English versions, I never realized how American (or at least "Western") a lot of the humor is. Especially with gags like the "were-are/ler-lar" lines, I gotta wonder how they were able to translate the jokes. Regarless, they were all spectacular performances ^_^
I think what makes Kristin’s so compelling and clear is her breath control and specific choices. This song is so challenging to sing and commit to and move with- so sometimes I think the labored breathing takes away from Glinda’s sense of security in herself. She’s preppy and flamboyant, yes- and she moves with grace and swiftness. All of these women are fantastic. And I do love to see, hear, and feel all of the different renditions of Glinda that introduce new layers/nuances/characteristics that audiences haven’t thought of before or expected. Excitement rises and falls so differently in each body, and this is one hell of a role!!! They’re fabulous. And Kristin originating the role for others to continue to flourish in it has created such a beautiful garden. So excited for the movie ❤️

Current Glinda is Kate Rockwell if y'all are wondering
❤
Courtney Monsma is Glinda in the 2024 Australian season of Wicked and she is spectacular and hilariously funny. She’s truly a star 🌟 💓
As a Brazilian I’m sorry. Ours sounds and acts like it’s a school play! 😂
I love how broadway Glindas get more and more unhinged as the years go on
Yes!!! Personally I think… Glinda went off the rails COMPLETELY with Alli Mauzey and Kara Lindsay 😂
This is so true Glinda gets more and more and more manic w/every staging
It’s gaaaaaaalinda 😂
Actually Brittney Johnson (current Glenda) is pretty melow compared to a few others, but I do see what you mean. I absolutely love the craziness.
frr jenni barber was so funny with her performance
Ali Mauzey’s is such a refreshing Glinda for me. so bubbly, unhinged, and unserious. she stands out for me. absolutely love it!
I saw her on one or the National tours and she is one of my favorite Glindas--and she performed with my favorite Elphaba, Marcie Dodd. Incredible pair!
She's my favorite Glinda, sooo funny and charismatic! I love Glinda because of her
I saw her in crybaby musical. And in wicked. But Glenda wasn’t even half as unhinged as her character and crybaby, and it was amazing.
I think her voice fits glinda a lot more than the full voices that Kristin and other actresses have
I love how in all of them the actress playing Elphaba is trying not to laugh
Ikr cute
I love how every actress after Kristen makes Glinda their own.
The touring Glinda's also made it their own!
Kristen will always be the best but I’m actually a fan of how Jenni Barber did it!! I think there’s something in her voice that’s so unique for the character! Her facials crack me up too 😂
She's my favorite glinda
Omg she totally killed it! Ali Mauzey was my other favourite (aside from Kristin of course). They both did the physical comedy really well😂
Omg same I saw it on Broadway when she was Glinda
I'm Biss to Kristen bc that's who performed when I saw it, but they're all very good
I love Kristen, but when you compare her version here to the others, she doesn't seem to having as much fun.
I love how in the Brazilian version the "were... are" part wouldn't fit so they changed Glinda's line to something like "you need to celebrate the blessings that life gave you... me." and it cracks me up
Sim! Ficou tão booooom!!!
Thank you for translating! I don't speak a lick of portuguese but the actress was so good she made me laugh!! 😂 Loved her 😂😂
Kristin's "awfully long way to go" was the best and the most naturally funny haha
She will ALWAYS get my vote!
I agree!
i feel like jenni barbers is a very very close second
yup
Love how Kim Bo Kyung just throws Elphaba away so suddenly!
Me too 😂🤣🤣🤣✨ So Flawless in a way 😁✨💟👑

So cool to know Laura Bell Bundy did it! Totally fits with Elle! Also cool she was an understudy for Glinda and Annaleigh was for Elle!
Yeah it is!

Kendra for the acting, Alli for the sheer unhinged madness that sort of became the blueprint for every Glinda that came after her.
