Might be an unpopular opinion, but I quite Enjoy the perks of being a wallflower. The movie isn’t perfect but the final act is so powerful. Also, not a movie but after watching normal people, I read the book and the mini series was just as good if not better
I love, love, love The perks of being a wallflower. Book and Movie. I agree, the movie isn't perfect, but I feel like it really brought the characters to live in a very special way.
Omg the movie recomendations in this video!!! You need to talk more about your film degree and movies recs bc they are all top tier!!!! I would defenetly say Emma (2020) is true to jane austens humor, and the aesthetic is inmaculate
I would like to add Perks of Being a Wallflower. The book was good, but the movie was better. Pretty sure the author directed the movie which is probably why it's so good.
Forrest Gump was one of the best examples of the movie being better than the book. I could not finish the book, I left off after Gump gets rescued from an uncharted island after his spaceship crashed there. So yeah, ALL the changes they made for the film were for the better. Also, when I was getting my undergrad in Film Studies we had to write an essay on what we felt was the greatest film of all time and I wrote mine on THE WIZARD OF OZ due to its timelessness and simplistic message. A few years later I bought a special edition of L. Frank Baum's novel and even the forward ripped the book apart for how horribly it aged, especially when compared to ALICE IN WONDERLAND which was written around the same time.
Honestly I think I prefered the Good Omens miniseries that Amazon did over the novel itself. I still loved the novel, don't get me wrong, but I had so much more fun with the series.
A Fantasy example of this concept is Stardust(2007)! My favorite film from childhood for its fast-paced, interwoven magical story but when I read the novel it was based on as a young adult all of my favorite parts were not in it! The only examples of this I have ever found.
so glad you included hunt for the wilderpeople! as an australian I can say that many great australian and new zealand films are underrated and not talked about enough in other countries so thank you for talking about it
Gotta be Fight Club for me. The novel is really great, but the movie builds upon that storyline and David Fincher's filmmaking is just flawless. Something about that film probably makes it (one of) my most rewatched movies, though being an unlikely candidate for that position story/theme wise, something about it is just addicting/energizing.
back when i was 16 i accidentally read 'warm bodies' by isaac marion, then immediately saw the movie, and screamed about both to everyone i know in the next few months. absolute favourites of mine to this day. the book and the movie are different in tone and emphasis, but both are so delightfully weird, heartwarming and haunting - and that comes from a person who never gravitated towards zombies or horror elements in general. the book eventually became a series which went under the radar and i'm so mad because the author deserves all the hype UGH also, loved your video! i adore what we do in the shadows so i'm definitely checking out hunt for the wilderpeople.
I listened to the audio of Warm Bodies and ohmygosh yes so good. The voice actor reading it was phenomenal and somehow both portrayed zombie deadness AND emotional intelligence/depth. SUCH a great listen
I'd personally add Last of the Mohicans. It turns a meandering and repetitive narrative into a passionate and exciting tale I can watch again and again.
Ring was actually adapted to a Japanese film before the American remake! I thought the cinematography in the original was so beautiful, would highly recommend if you have a chance to watch it :)
this is true! but i'm a big baby and have nothing to prove (like i thought i did when i was in middle school) so i cannot and will not subject myself to that fear! but i can safely assume that the japanese adaptation is superior.
I'm Thinking of Ending Things is one of my all time favorite books and when I started watching the movie adaptation, I had little to no expectation because I couldn't imagine how they'd successfully adapt the book for the screen. The movie being so good shocked me!!! I love the book and the movie for entirely different reasons but the core is the same in both versions. Charlie Kaufman did a great job
When I tell you I audibly gasped when Wristcutters was on the list. One of my favorite book-to-screens. Keret’s work deserves so much more exposure than it has.
ALLY OMG THE EDITING ON THIS VIDEO IS PERFECTION. haven't even finished the video yet but i had to let you know that it's phenomenal. you're SUCH a hardworking editor and it shows.
the haunting of hill house is one of my favourite books of all time and it was developed so well into a series!! - they added a lot of content, fleshed out/added characters, and the parts of the book that i personally loved were developed and explored (particularly nell's connections and her arrested development, and the family dynamics!!) also i just watched never let me go for the first time this month and i can't stop thinking about it, so now i gotta read the book
The Haunting of Hill House is incredible!!! I love everything Mike Flanagan makes, but this is definitely my favourite thing of his. I would also recommend Midnight Mass (Netflix) if you haven’t seen it, also directed and written by him.
Yeah the Haunting of Hill House series was so good! I read the book first and was so happy to find that the show didn't really follow the plot of the book at all, as much as expand this universe.
I felt that the Normal People miniseries somehow had the exact same dialogue as the book but was so much better. The actors did such a great job at bringing tangible emotion to the characters that sometimes seemed unfeeling in the book. I was more hopeful for the show versions of Connell & Marianne than for their book counterparts
I watched the minseries with my girlfriend and she had read the book, disliked it quite a bit, but she still wanted to check out the miniseries. After we both finished it we both gave it high praise and I asked her why she liked it so much more than the book and she said she thinks the type of story it was going for just worked better as a miniseries.
Shannyn Sossamon in “Wristcutters” is the reason I chopped my hair short 15 years ago. I brought a photo of her from the movie as a reference. I’ve always adored her. 🥰
The TV series Penny dreadful did a lot of the classic gothic justice like Frankenstein, Dracula, and picture of Dorian gray. I ESPECIALLY liked the show for the depiction of Dr. Frankenstein and his monster.
the fear i felt when you started talking about the ring but you get it thanks for not showing the scary bits LOL. also hunt for wilderpeople!!! was such an excellent movie, this made me wanna rewatch asap!!
The one example I always give of a movie being better than the book is Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. In the book, the protagonist is terrible and because we see all the other characters through his annoying, judgemental perspective, everyone in the story seems either awful or flat. I think the movie did a great job making Greg a bit more charismatic and exploring some of the other characters' complexity, especially Rachel. It is the only case I can remember where I really hate the book but love the movie. Thanks for the video and the awesome recommendations!
Equals: - Five people you meet in heaven - The Book thief - A discovery of witches season 1 - A Christmas Carol (1991) - Chocolat (Joanne Harris) - Good Omens Better: - Earthsea - The Witcher - Interview with the vampire - The Hunger games - Alice in Wonderland
i think often when the author has a role in the production of the adaptation in some way its always so much better like perks of being a wallflower, normal people, good omens
loved this video! i feel like not a ton of people know that Legally Blonde was a book first (imo it’s not that good lol), but i will steadfastly defend the movie as a superior work of genius forever! super interesting to hear your opinion on Howl’s Moving Castle - it’s one of my favourite books of all time BUT i didn’t love the movie! i’m glad we have both so that there’s something for everyone :)
Both the Color Purple and How Stella Got Her Groove Back were good books but the movies were a ton better!!! I really struggled with reading Never Let Me Go... might check out the film now.
love and friendship is based on jane austen's novella lady susan and i think it's better, because the original is so short and jane austen always just packs her books with characters there isn't much attachment to any of them so you barely have time to get them all straight, but it's a lot of fun and the movie brings all the fun with it, it has style, and it sorts out the characters for you to make it all a lot easier to follow also the last unicorn is one of my absolute favorite books and movies, just all time amazing, highly highly recommend both!!!
Girl, Interrupted is an excellent adaption of the book! I loved both. :) Blue is the Warmest Colour, while problematic in its treatment of the lead actresses, is wayyyy better than the graphic novel.
About a Boy is a better movie than book (for me); the book had a convoluted/bloated ending and the movie's denouement is chef's kiss. I'm also a fan of watching the movie before reading the book, because it helps me appreciate both more, rather than be disappointed that the movie didn't do something I was expecting.
I cannot stress enough how important you and the work you make is for me! Thank you so much for this beautiful video Ally, its so nicely narrated and edited. It reminded me that I still have to watch so many of these movies ~ Coraline will forever be my all time favorite
I loveddd the adaption of Normal People and I know a lot of people prefer it to the books. I also really loved Sharp Objects- I watched it first and then went back and read the book and it was still so good even though I knew the plot
I'm so glad to hear this about Sharp Objects! I LOVED the show and was sad to find out it was a book after the fact, especially knowing the author, but I'm so glad to hear it's still a good experience to read it. :)
the martian is my favorite example of a book and movie adaptation that are just as enjoyable as eachother, of course not perfect, but the movie is just as funny and heartwarming imo
Obsessed with this video concept!! As much as I love a good classic, sometimes I just prefer their adaptations, Anna Karenina being a prime example. The book was torturous to read whereas I will happily watch the Keira Knightley film!
I also adore Keira Knightley but I prefer the older adaptation, just because the costumes are actually accurate. The Keira Knightley one has pretty abysmal costuming which made it painful to watch. I also hate Vronsky's moustache in that version XD
For me two movies were better than their source books. 1. Election (staring Reese Witherspoon and Mathew Broderick). The book dragged and had me rooting for no one, while the movie used creative cutting and voice over to have you caring about everyone involved. 2. What Dreams May Come (staring Robin Williams and more) The book was very preachy with a singular view of what happens in the here after. The characters were just okay. The movie was beautiful (though a product of its time tech wise) and inspiring. The idea of what comes next was more complex and strangely soothing (in a good way). The relationships of the family seemed more pumped up- there are parts I still cry at. (also bonus points for the Dante references-bookception!)
The ring has me so traumatized I closed my eyes when you were showing a clip and breathed a sigh of relief when you said you wouldnt show anything scary.
my favorite is fingersmith to the handmaiden. fingersmith was so boring to me, it dragged and the plot twists just got boring after a while, but the handmaiden keeps you invested the entire time, spices it up a little and improves the ending by miles. that's how it's done!
Neil Gaiman Stardust. Like sorry but the movie has Robert De Niro as cross dressing captain of the flying pirate ship that steals lightning bolts and sells them to witches. Can't top that one
Hunt for the Wilderpeople is my favourite movie, I love that you mentioned it!! Another movie that is better than the book is Drive. The book was kind of a drag, but the film (directed by Nicholas Winding Refn) is incredible. It’s short and tense, beautifully shot in LA and it stars Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac (+many more), and the dynamic between them is so exciting. The dialogue is kept to the minimum (literally the definition of show don’t tell) and the ending will leave you breathless. I would highly recommend everyone to watch it, cause I feel like it fell a bit under the radar after it came out.. 🥰
"Dolores Claiborne" by Stephen King ... the book and the movie take a different approach to telling the story and because of this, complement each other very nicely! Also, King's "Gerald's Game" has a connection with the book "Dolores Claiborne".
This has added so many movies to my watch list!!! 😍I also agree with Howl's moving castle, the book added a little extra context to the story but I will 100% go back to the movie if I want to re-immerse myself into the world!
The book Fight Club was great, but the twist just works better infilm. Also Practical Magic is one of my favorite movies but none of what I love about the movie is in the book.
I loved this video! Absolutely agree with you on The Lovely Bones. I haaaaaated the book, but the movie made the story actually bearable. One of my favorite book to movie adaptations is Holes! Such a great book and an even better movie! A movie I think botched the book was I'm Thinking of Ending Things. I wasn't even a huge fan of the book, but the movie made me want to end things, too. 😂😂😂
@@allisonpaiges I tried to show my husband the movie to get his reaction (thinking it would actually be like the book) and we were both just like 🤨 the entire time. I was just like ... nevermind the book wasn't like this- sorry I wasted our time. 🤣
the tv show brand new cherry flavor is SO much better than the book. I watched it before I had read the novel so I was pretty excited to read it. it was pretty disappointing but I'm deeply impressed with what the show's writers were able to do with the story.
I had no idea some of these were based on books! I think the movie adaptation of Me, Earl, & The Dying Girl was better than the book. There was just so much more emotion in it. Editing to say that I watched Room on a flight home from Paris and as if I wasn't sad enough, that film bummed me out for DAYS lol. I do want to read the book though. Just saving it for a time when I'm more emotionally stable.
absolutely loved this video and all of your recs! I always enjoy watching movie adaptations and looking for the differences and changes which make the movie as unique as the original source (and a great example is howl's moving castle). I think that it is a very sad and arcaic way of thinking when we expect movies to be exactly as the novels so I'm happy to see a content creator who looks at films in the same positive light as the novels
I can’t wait to watch Hunt for the Wilderpeople! I think It’s Kind of a Funny Story was as great of a film as it was a book. I liked both so very much. And I have to agree that The Perks of Being a Wallflower was also a great film adaptation. I almost liked it more than the book. I finished Where the Crawdads Sing a few months ago I’m excited to see the film coming out soon!
Ahh! We appear to be VERY movie compatible =) Wristcutters is one of my top ten very favest films. sooo dang beautiful. Also hunt for the Wilderpeople is so rad and I only wish I'd watched it when I was younger. And I'm just now realizing that the bushman is Rhys Darby
I loved this so much. As a person who doesn’t have the attention span for books and also loves movies with deeper meanings - I am so excited to watch these.
Oh god the emotional gut punch just seeing clips from Never Let Me Go. One of my favorite books, and could not agree more. Also - I think Taiki Watiti is a genius and can do no wrong.
I personally liked the Coraline movie more than the book but that might be because I saw the movie way before reading the book either way, the book was not bad I just missed Wybie
I so agree that the Room movie was on par with the book, I was hoping you would mention it! Thanks for the video, now I have some great movie recomondations
The Prestige is another where the movie is better than the book. The changes that were made to the character's relationships made more sense and making it more of a mystery in the movie was just perfect.
i think the hunger games film series is just as good as the books and sally rooney’s first books normal people and conversations with friends were turned into mini series and they were both amazing !
Hunt for the Wilderpeople is just a perfect film. A+. Not a movie but Killing Eve surpasses the books at every level. The books are a slog even though they're short. The show is just wonderful and the tone is so much better than the novels.
I really liked your recs, a lot of the are books or movies I never heard about. Controversial opinion: The clockwork Orange movie is better (I like the book, but the visuals are amazing and It has a better ending), also I preffer Pride and Prejudice 2005 over the book (It's one of my favorite movies of all time and when I read the book I was disapoited- noted I read it as a teen, so maybe I should re-read because Jane Austen). And Call me by your name is very good in both formats
Adding Wild to this list as a movie that is just as good as the book IMO. I watched it first and then read the book afterward, so that might also be a factor.
For me. Tuck Everlasting movie is better than the book. Obviously I’m not the reader demographic, and I remember liking it when I was a kid. But when I re read it a few months ago it didn’t hold up. But when I rewatch the movie (which I also loved as a kid) it holds up!
Better? Definitely Stardust. Admittedly I saw the movie multiple times before I even knew it was a book. I think they are both good, but the changes the movie made to the story made it better for me. Worse? too many to mention.
I agree with Stardust! The filmmakers made the right changes to the original. I was so glad they took out the part in the beginning where Tristan's to-be-father get's a magical wish from a mysterous man in return for a small favour. That magic creates the whole story and consequently kills all the romance in it. Poor Star in the book, she was a victim! At least the movie was feel-good and positive. With the book I only had bad after-taste.
In general I think if u can, is ideal to try and see the movie and book as two seperate things, because the medium is so different, so often just makes sense for the story to be told/emphasize different things. For example for me, when I first saw Lord of the Rings (which I Adored as a kid) I reread the book just before, and was disappointed. But now, with some distance I can Really appreciate how incredible those films are (apart from how they did Faramir dirty 😅). Appreciate the film reccomendations, defs going to look up Wilderpeople and Wristcutters! 🙂
Dystopian book to movie adaptations are my nostalgia comfort movies and I think the hunger games did SUCH a good job, I also think the maze runner is waaaay better than the books, and then divergent-book one was SUCH a good adaptation, insurgent was good, and then……. Then it happened 😐
Are you familiar with 'Blindness' (Ensaio Sobre a Cegueira, in its original title in Portuguese) by great writer José Saramago and its impecable rendition in film by Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles ? Both are worth it. Promise. ;)
@@allisonpaiges honestly Taika Watiti's films are lined with gold dust. I love JoJo Rabbit and What We Do in the Shadows too. Will 100% watch everything he makes ✨
I agree with you on Howl's Moving Castle--haven't decided if I'll read the later books in the series, I felt the book dragged and wasn't nearly as whimsical and fun as the movie.
I learnt about so many film adaptations in this video! Can't wait to watch Never Let Me Go! And I had never heard of Room, but it sounds incredible so I'm going to read/watch it soon!
The only take I can’t agree with is Howl’s Moving Castle. I would put them on par with each other. The movie puts its own spin on the book as well, so I just find them both wonderful in their own way.
Emma (2020) was sooo much better than the book! And (not a movie but) the Station Eleven TV series that was released last year was so amazing and did things with the story that the book didn’t that I loved so much. I also think To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before movie is superior.
Matilda by Roald Dahl is a great children’s book, but Danny DeVito, who directed the movie, absolutely gave that story so much life!

The ring has me so traumatized I closed my eyes when you were showing a clip and breathed a sigh of relief when you said you wouldnt show anything scary.
we don’t deserve that kind of nonsense in our lives 💛
I agree with the howl's moving castle 🥰
The movie is MAGNIFICENT
my favorite is fingersmith to the handmaiden. fingersmith was so boring to me, it dragged and the plot twists just got boring after a while, but the handmaiden keeps you invested the entire time, spices it up a little and improves the ending by miles. that's how it's done!
One of the worst things is when the book doesn’t hit and you miss out on a really good movie. Maybe I’ll have to add a few to the watchlist
The Ring traumatized me as an innocent 8th grader lol
right?! i watched it in middle school as well and have not been the same, since.
I didn't even know Hunt for the Wilderpeople was based on a book. Love that one
For movie adaptations that I love as well as the book:
The lovely bones
White oleander
Speak
YOU
Lolita
Carrie
Another (anime)
This has added so many movies to my watch list!!! 😍I also agree with Howl's moving castle, the book added a little extra context to the story but I will 100% go back to the movie if I want to re-immerse myself into the world!
Loved this video and this list! I remember seeing Gone Girl in theaters and 100% feeling like it did the book justice.
The book Fight Club was great, but the twist just works better infilm. Also Practical Magic is one of my favorite movies but none of what I love about the movie is in the book.
Omg I love Hunt for the Wilderpeople! I didn’t know it’s based of a book
HOLES IS SUCH A GOOD EXAMPLE
and couldn’t agree more with the thinking of ending things movie
@@allisonpaiges I tried to show my husband the movie to get his reaction (thinking it would actually be like the book) and we were both just like 🤨 the entire time. I was just like ... nevermind the book wasn't like this- sorry I wasted our time. 🤣
So amazing to see Hunt for the Wilderpeople love outside of NZ! Kia ora
the tv show brand new cherry flavor is SO much better than the book. I watched it before I had read the novel so I was pretty excited to read it. it was pretty disappointing but I'm deeply impressed with what the show's writers were able to do with the story.
I love both the film and book Never Let Me Go!
me toooo!
I totally forgot about wristcutters. What a good movie.
love this!
my picks would be: The Hunger Games, The Help and any adaptation of Alice in Wonderland
absolutely loved this video and all of your recs!
I finished Where the Crawdads Sing a few months ago I’m excited to see the film coming out soon!
yessss i agree so much with its kind of a funny story
yesss omg the soundtrack of Its kind of a funny story and the actors and wowowowow :D
The last movie you mentioned is one of my favorites! Going to give the book a read soon! Great video!
Your choices are soooooooooo beautiful. Love it! I adore these movies!!!! Gotta go watch em now👀✨🍃🍃
Oh god the emotional gut punch just seeing clips from Never Let Me Go. One of my favorite books, and could not agree more. Also - I think Taiki Watiti is a genius and can do no wrong.
i didn't know hunt for the wilderpeople was a book! the movie is absolutely amazing
I personally liked the Coraline movie more than the book but that might be because I saw the movie way before reading the book
either way, the book was not bad I just missed Wybie
I so agree that the Room movie was on par with the book, I was hoping you would mention it! Thanks for the video, now I have some great movie recomondations
you just brightened my day and gave me new movies to watch! love love love your content. thank you for your time and energy!
Thank you for this recommendations. Looking forward to watch all this movies :)
I watched it first and then read the book afterward, so that might also be a factor.
this is a good one!
@@Lumors well said!
I love Neil Gaiman's Stardust, and I enjoy the movie more.
The Lovely Bones was the only movie to scare to the point that I can't sleep.
Also Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist falls on this list.
Dystopian book to movie adaptations are my nostalgia comfort movies and I think the hunger games did SUCH a good job, I also think the maze runner is waaaay better than the books, and then divergent-book one was SUCH a good adaptation, insurgent was good, and then……. Then it happened 😐
Great list Ally!!
Are you familiar with 'Blindness' (Ensaio Sobre a Cegueira, in its original title in Portuguese) by great writer José Saramago and its impecable rendition in film by Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles ? Both are worth it. Promise. ;)
Ooof. This Video was good
Looooove Hunt for the Wilderpeople!
TOP. TIER.
You gave me 2 new movies I want to see , A Monster Calls and Room
I learnt about so many film adaptations in this video! Can't wait to watch Never Let Me Go! And I had never heard of Room, but it sounds incredible so I'm going to read/watch it soon!
The only take I can’t agree with is Howl’s Moving Castle. I would put them on par with each other. The movie puts its own spin on the book as well, so I just find them both wonderful in their own way.
Six new movies on this list I will be checking out. Love your content. You could persuade me to read (and apparently watch) the phone book! Thanks.
Emma (2020) was sooo much better than the book! And (not a movie but) the Station Eleven TV series that was released last year was so amazing and did things with the story that the book didn’t that I loved so much. I also think To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before movie is superior.
