My favourite Graphic Novel adaptation has to be the Crow, the movie was so gracious to the original work and enhanced the storyline in a way that turned a movie into a legend.

I thought the exact same thing - and Tarkovsky's gotten nods from these guys before so I was surprised they missed him here.
Once I saw Stalker my whole view on cinema changed.
They are celebrating the creative adaptation, the one that forges the source material into a completely different form hence the unusual picks. If they looked for straight adaptations, Solaris and Stalker would top the list with The Godfather.

Robert Altman adapted nine stories and one poem by Raymond Carver into Short Cuts.

O Brother Where art there is literally my favorite film of all time. I'm glad it finally gets some attention! Also, if we were talking about an adaptation of Homer's Odyssey, troy wouldn't be the film you would pick, as troy is based off of Homer's The Iliad

I love O Brother. It's endlessly entertaining, quotable as hell, it has great acting, beautiful cinematography, and fantastic music.
it got attention in the best use of color. #9 selected colors.
I feel like Paul Thomas Anderson's There will be blood fits the first category really well. Like Apocalypse Now it only uses its source material as a starting block and then builds a whole world of its own.

These are all great. I would also suggest High Fidelity for adhering beautifully to the spirit of the novel while also transporting it from Britain to Chicago. A stunning surprise that it worked so well.

Lord of the Rings is a great adaptation, even with all the missed detail and tiny plots they left out. Just like game of thrones.
Victor Von Deathstroke it deserved more than an honorable mention.
The movies are already almost 12 hours long. Had they to includ all those tiny plots and details, the movies would be a day long.
I like that you play lengthy clips from your picks without talking over them.
Mark Kermode is an excellent critic and the movie based on his review thing is hilarious though I've been meaning to watch it but haven't found it yet. Do check out their radio show podcast or reviews on youtube I love those guys.
Finally Oldboy gets some love, you’ve talked about it so much before but never actually talked about it so I’m happy
O Brother Where Art Thou is such an underrated movie. Such an amazing soundtrack.
At least a mention of A Clockwork Orange would be nice. One of the few movies actually better than the original book, in my opinion.

No movie has ever thrown me for a loop as hard as Oldboy. I was floored after watching it on a whim with a buddy of mine
"The Wizard of Oz," "The Grapes of Wrath," "Doctor Zhivago," and especially "Gone with the Wind" should at least be mentioned, which they aren't. "A Streetcar Named Desire" is mentioned in quick passing, but I think it probably deserves a spot on the list for having launched Marlon Brando's film career. Without "Streetcar," the entire history of film would be radically different. There wouldn't have been an "Apocalypse Now." Also it might be mentioned that "Pirates of the Caribbean" was such a great adaptation of the Disney ride that they actually went back and changed the ride to make it center around Jack Sparrow. And speaking of Disney - Speak of Disney!! The Disney adaptation of "Beauty and the Beast" in particular, I think, deserves some discussion. "Adaptation" is an original screenplay about the inability to adapt something. To categorize it as a successful adaptation doesn't seem right to me. And while "O Brother" is stuffed full of visual references to The Odyssey, the plot diverges an awful lot for it to really be called an adaptation (for starters, Odysseus is a victorious king, not an escaped prisoner, and he doesn't have to retrieve anything in order for his wife to take him back, he just has to murder all of the suitors who have shown up during his absence).

They forgot to mention that O Brother Where Art Thou got its name from Sullivan’s Travels which is about a guy trying to make a movie with the same name that takes place during the depression.

Volvagia´s Blaze Jodorowsky tried to adapt Dune in the '70, after he did The Holy Mountain. He also wrote the script and the storyboard, and everything was ready but in the end Hollywood didn't let him shot the movie. In the documentary "Jodorowsky's Dune", at the end, he says the material he has put together wouldn't be good anymore for a live action, but it could be for an animated movie. If you haven't seen it, check the documentary!
I know about the legendary Jodorosky version, i actually own the documentary. The movie wasn´t made because he spent 1 million dollars of a 10 million budget film on pre-production alone and it was gonna be a nightmare to promote a 4 hour LSD trip. Some good did come out of it being canceled. People like H. R. Giger, Dan O´Bannon, Chris Foss and many others who worked on the film eventually made Alien.
O Brother, Where Art Thou was the PERFECT choice for #1... Not only a great adaptation but a GREAT movie on the whole. 😊

Not every story with incest has something to do with oedipus. Neither the narrative structure or the characters motivations are based on Oedipus Rex. There may some similarities in the emotional core of the story but not enough to call it an adaptation.

It's probably because it's Christmas, but the first film I thought of was Tři oříšky pro Popelku (Three Nuts For Cinderella). Granted, the whole movie is about who will get to marry the prince, but it's done in such a great way, and it is without a doubt the best version of Cinderella ever made.
That's legit my favourite movie, I used to watch that with my family and it is such a great adaptatio of Cinderella

Can'TV I'm just saying they mentioned so many graphic novel to movie titles but didn't even hint at the watchmen. And if you've read the comics then you know how great the movie really is outside of Snyder making an exceptional movie.

Just no. Watchmen the movie dumbed down the original source (from a filmaking and a thematic point of view) without adding anything valuable to it (except if you're into lazy matrix-style fightings... which doesn't suits the original graphic novel's main point).

The Godfather is a great movie per se. Beeing an Adaptation is not what´s so great and special about it.
The "Etc." category is actually an awesome Top 5 plot twist...etc. etc.
Except TROY is based on Homer’s THE ILIAD, not THE ODYSSEY. But of course, you knew that....right?
