This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2022 Mazda3 GT compact sedan. We are driving the Mazda3 GT Turbo with 18” black wheels, a black grille, black exterior accents, a chrome lower bumper and larger exhaust outlets. It has a 2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic transmission, 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel. You get a bit of a bump in power if you use premium, 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. Standard AWD on the turbo model. There are two other engine options, a 2.5L non-turbo with 186 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. FWD and AWD options are available and a 2L 4-cylinder with a standard 6-speed manual, available 6-speed automatic transmission. It has 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque, standard FWD. This is the only trim with a manual transmission, the US no longer has a manual option on the sedan, only the hatchback. Some standard features on the Mazda3 include, an 8.8” display with Mazda Connect, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a 7” LCD display, a manual driver and passenger seat, heated front seats, Mazda harmonic acoustics with 8-speakers, LED headlights, LED taillights and a temporary spare tire. Available features on the Mazda3 include a heated steering wheel, leatherette and leather upholstery, a power driver’s seat, driver seat memory, moonroof and a 360 view-monitor.
In Canada, the base Mazda3 trim with the manual transmission starts at $21,400 CAD and the automatic $22,700 CAD. GS FWD $25,400 CAD, AWD $27,400 CAD, GT FWD $31,100 CAD, AWD $33,100 CAD and the GT 2.5 T $35,500 CAD.
In the US, the 2.0 FWD Mazda 3 model starts at $21,150 USD, 2.5 S FWD $22,100 USD,
Select FWD $23,450 USD, Preferred FWD $25,100 USD, Preferred AWD $26,500 USD, Carbon Edition FWD $26,750 USD, Premium FWD $27,700 USD, Premium AWD $29,100 USD, 2.5T $30,900 USD and 2.5T Premium Plus $33,450 USD.

I think the 2.5 is the way to go if your looking for long term reliability. Mazda has been building and refining it for decades and it is solid.

I have a 2013 Madza 3 with the 2.5 and have 180K miles with no issues except the valve cover gasket leaked oil into the spark plug well about a year ago and shorted out the plug but it was an easy fix and still going strong.

I have owned several Mazdas over the years. Some with independent rear suspensions and now two (3 Premium Hatch and CX-50 Turbo) with torsion beam rear ends. There is no noticeable loss of ride quality and handling in our new ones. Both are amazing examples of what Mazda is capable of !

The torsion beam was a concern as roads in NJ are not always great and dont want a poor ride. Now if we can only get 50 series tires on the upper end trim the ride would be even better . thx

I love my 2018 Mazda3 hatchback. I average about 27mpg in LA commuting, but around 34 mpg on road trips. It’s quick enough for everyday driving, and fast enough when I need it. And, it’s smooth! The power train is aging, but I like the reliability history and feel compared to other brands’ turbocharged engines and cvt’s.

I have absolutely zero seat time in any newer Mazdas. Older yes (RX7 & 8, 323 Protégé, 626, MPV, their old pickups and even the rarely seen 929). I am consistently blown away by how many reviewers have praised both the driving dynamics and fit/finish of interior. Andrea, you have convinced me to go and check them out (test drive one?). Besides I think they look good, (all whilst ‘owning’ their look), especially as a sedan. Thanks for sharing your impressions. Cheers!

We had a Mazda 6 and really miss it. Wasn't the fastest car but not slow either. It far exceeded the EPA MPG ratings. We got 37 MPG@ 75 mph on a road trip. I suspect this Mazda 3 in real world driving will far exceed its EPA rating of 33 mpg.

I have a CX-30 and I also test drove the Mazda 3 Sedan, the interiors are pretty good for the price and Mazda is one of the mainstream car companies that cares about handling (Honda being the other one that comes to mind immediately). As a result all the Mazda cars I've driven handle better but ride stiffer than Toyotas, Hyundais, etc. Definitely worth a test drive if you like that sort of thing, I love mine.

Just took delivery of my brand new 2022 Mazda 3 Sedan in Sonic Silver Metallic. Ordered it in March..... so it's been a 7 month wait for it here in Melbourne, Australia. (Imported from Japan).
I am beyond thrilled with the car. It is absolutely stunning, gorgeous, classy, premium and luxurious. Could not have made a better choice for myself.
    I am a Mazda fan.
My father bought me a brand new Mazda 626 sedan back in 1990 when l was 18 years old. That car is now 32 years old, has achieved 500,000km (310,000 miles!!!!!). Has never failed me and still looks, drive and feels like new. It is beyond unbelievable and l will never part with it.
I intended to drive both cars, my 1990 Mazda 626 sedan and my stunning, breathtaking 2022 Mazda 3 sedan.
    Warm regards from Melbourne 🇦🇺

Thanks for featuring our question. Great review as always. If objectively scoring, the space and fuel economy of the civic would tilt it over the 3, but the 3 just has that unique driving feel. And agree on the turbo front. The turbo has got so much press, because it is really good, that the great power and linear response of the non-turbo gets forgotten sometimes…a great power and fuel economy combo.

Great review of a great car! We bought a 2021 Mazda 3 ( ... M3 I call it :) ...) AWD Premium (US trim level) June a year ago. It's in the Soul Red Crystal Metallic with white leather interior. It was nicely optioned with a body color trunk lid spoiler, the bright trim on the horizontal surface of the rear bumper cover where the trunk lid meets the bumper cover, wireless phone charger, mud mats, and locking lug nuts. We added the dealer installed frameless HomeLink rearview mirror as part of the purchase deal. If I do say so myself the car is absolutely stunning. And, it is a hoot to drive. You're right Andrea, turbo not needed. Zack, you're also correct in saying, 10 out of 10 people wouldn't know it had a (evidently sophisticated) twist beam versus IRS. Two things I like two things I don't like :) . It's fun and nimble and looks great and is comfortable and gets good gas mileage (ok, so that's more than two). I wish it had ventilated seats, it gets hot and humid in the mid Atlantic/mid South region, and I wish it had a heated steering wheel, it gets cold here too, and I wish you didn't have to go up to the Turbo Premium Plus to get 360 camera and parking sensors in the US. I know, I know, that's more than two.
It's my wife's car. She lets me drive it. We had a wonderful 2008 Acural TL purchased new with only 58,400 miles (that's what retirement followed by a pandemic can do to your motoring) on it when we sold it privately for a low five figure amount. The only reason the TL went was because my wife wanted a car with more up to date safety features and the M3 delivers. I submit that if you removed the Mazda badging and stylized wing logo and sub'd in a circle with a stylized " L " within the circle a fair number of folks would think they were looking at and driving a baby brand L car. Over statement, perhaps, but probably not by too much.
It's a great car ... I can't speak for the content of the other trim levels, but the US Premium trim is very nice although it would be nicer if the Mazda product planners added a few items to it that are otherwise found in the Turbo Premium Plus in the US. If anyone reading this, if anyone reads it that is, and you're on the fence considering whether to purchase one, I urge you to take a test drive in one. I think you'll like it.
(An aside on our purchase, of all the cars my wife tested I could tell as soon as she got in the Mazda the search was over ... when we got back to the dealership the sales manager, a wonderful, great guy named John, very nice, low key, no pressure, no gimmickry, asked my wife what she thought. She replied she liked it but was also considering the then new generation Honda Civic. As the fates would have it, there is a Honda store a (long) stone's throw from the Mazda store. John said, 'well, why don't you drive the Mazda over to Honda and compare them side by side.' That's what we did. There was a new Civic in the high trim level parked right in front of the dealer and my wife pulled up next to it, got out, looked at the two, and said, it's the Mazda. John's faith in his product was justified. At that moment another couple walked up and admired the Mazda, I calmly told them, "this car is sold" and we scooted back to the Mazda store to ink the deal. )

The Mazda's design is really getting better and better in recent years, especially the interiors are getting some European vibes.
I personally always prefer the sedan form than hatchbacks for the compact cars. The only good looking hatchback is the Golf imo...it's got a great proportion overall!! 😬
Thanks for another great review Zack and Andrea......love the joyful ending btw!! 😉

Been loving my 2022 Touring model here in Australia. Fully leather interior, 2.0l 6sp auto, 18inch wheels with a few other bells and whistles.
The stock pioneer sound system is really solid, could almost pass for a older models Bose sound system. Plenty of low end with so much detail.
The car drives so well, holds corners like a race car while also being agile and smart.
All the safety tech really makes you a confident driver and everything is easy to use, set up and understand.
One of the best cars in its class. Can’t flaw it.

Another great review from you 2. Zac totally agree with you regarding the Mazda connect. I get to drive many different hire cars for work and once you are use to Mazda connect leaning forward to touch the screen to do things is annoying and simply dangerous .

I have exactly the same color right down to the color without the leather.I tell you a true story. Once I was racing with a Pirsche Panamera from 0-100km the Porsche could not pull away from my mighty 186hp Mazda 3. Then the Porsche sped away way beyond 100km/hour and I decided not to exceed the speed limit. The hatch gets a lot of comments for being beautiful which I was not expecting, and I might have just picked the sedan for $1800 less had I known the hatch would draw attention for its looks. when this gen Mazda 3 first came out in 2014, with the refreshed model
in 2016 your engine choices were as follows.
    the base engine was a 2.0, it made a 156hp, a 143tq, with a curb weight of 2949lbs,
    it went 0 - 60 in 8.7 seconds.
    the optional engine choice was a 2.4l, making a 185hp a 184tq. with the 2.4,
it put the curb weight at 3022lbs, 0 - 60 time was 7.1 seconds.
    so that was then,
the final and 3rd choice, the 2.5 turbo replaced the old 2.4 as the top option,
it's now the standard option on the base trims as of 2020.
so with the 2.5t, you get more power but curb weight also went up to 3067 lbs.
so here's how it works, if you put premium gas, you get 250hp, 320tq,
    0 - 60 in 5.3 seconds, but if you use regular gas, horsepower is 226, 0 - 60 in 6.3 seconds.
so to sum up which is the best option long term, for me the base 2.4 is more enough
for daily use, but your average 0 - 60 time will be between 6.9 to 7.2 seconds.
now the 2.5 turbo is obviously quicker, but unless you intend to put premium gas
which is the only way to get the most performance out of it, using regular gas
will cause more turbo tag as a result. so if you go with the turbo, please use premium,
but the base 2.4 doesn't require it. so you don't have to worry about turbo lag,
and even on the highway it doesn't struggle at all.

Why have added mechanical components when the car goes 0 to 60 in about 6 to 7 seconds with the naturally inspired engine. Plus, Mazda uses their own innovative, modernized design of the 6-speed automatic instead of the less-durable/reliable belt/chain design CVT's most everyone else uses in their ICE vehicles. Mazda is building better-quality ICE vehicles than either Toyota or Honda these days, or at least that has been my experience.

  • @arunta5

Mazda make good quality practical vehicles that are enjoyable to drive. They do not have the problematic turbo's or the CVt's I am very wary of both.

When the current Mazda3 came out in 2020, it wasn't sold particularly well. The high gas price's silver lining, is that I have seen about as many current Mazda3 as the previous 2 generations on the road. Even though the previous generation and original Mazda3 remained the a little bit more. They are great car, nevertheless. When I bought my Civic Sport 1.5T back in 2018. Mazda3 was the closet one to get. If Mazda offered the top range 2.5GT without leather seats, I could have been driving a Mazda3 right now.

In the 2024 model here in Canada, you gotta get the turbo if you want the black rims, black grill, and black accent. Just makes no sense to make the black accents exclusive to the turbo. What about ppl that dont want a turbo due to reliability concerns ? I know I can just get these replaced afterwards with OEM or aftermarket parts, but this really bothered me and I had to rant, sorry.

I have owned a 2022 Mazda 3 carbon edition for just more than a year now. I love the design, power and all that, but I’m very disappointed with the fuel economy and rear seat legroom. I get about 23 mpg combined and I don’t drive crazy at all. I’m a big fan of Mazda. Had a 2000 Mazda protege and a 2014 Mazda 6 in the past. Now, I can’t wait to get rid of my Mazda 3.

I prefer the sedan over the hatchback as well. Its just more balanced looking, plus the better visibility. I'm seriously considering a Carbon Edition in the US. A nearby dealer has one in transit. Pretty much my only disappointment with it is lack of rear AC vents, but I'm usually the only one in the car so I can live with that. Just seems like a brand that is trying to up their luxury aspirations they would have them.

I've heard chatter that this is going to be the last Mazda 3 the company makes, it's been said that after this generation runs out it's live cycle Mazda will not be replacing it, and with Mazda's recent obsession with SUVs I'm inclined to believe.

    • @bariton3779
      @bariton3779 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think Mazda is producing SUV’s out of necessity. Sedans just don’t sell well, so they sell SUV’s purely to stay afloat. I hope the market shifts towards sedans and hatches so we can get more of those from Mazda and other car companies in general.

Just test drive a 2023 Turbo hatch. I have a 2019 AWD NA. Lower end yes, the Turbo is quick. Feels like a V6. NA is also quick but feels different. The NA feels smoother less belligerent. The Turbo is forcing it down your throat. The NA is like heres some speed, you're welcome. Highway speeds not that different tbh. The turbo falls off at the high end. All that extra power and torque is felt 0 to 60.

How is the rear view verse the hatchback? I like the looks of hatch better but view seems limited. The sedan seems to be a lil lighter than the hatch and gets better gas mileage.

  • @ionebae9157
    @ionebae9157 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I disagree regarding the hatchback vs sedan... I think the hatchback is way more eye-catching and stylish. However, I concede that the thick C-pillars, although they look nice stylistically, do impede visibility and create huge blind spots.

I love this car but, of course, I am biased as I have it's big brother - a CX30. Mine is also the non turbo (but is AWD) and I agree with the comments of both Andrea and Zack. Its a blast to drive, gets excellent fuel economy, has a great interior and is the perfect size for our needs (we also have a Tiguan). I am little worried for Mazda...the have invest hugely in new, larger, more luxurious 6 cylinder SUVS when the whole world is going electric. Can they evolve quickly enough?

    Turbos and meant for diesel.
Just give me a normal aspirated gas motor any day. Today's engine can be made high performance without adding turbos.
    I'm driving a 15 Malibu 2.5 none turbo.
195 hp 190 tourqe. So very similar cars.
    I'm booking a test drive. I'd Iove a manual
