  • Episode 5, Tonal redundancy is a distinctive style of formulation in Coptic hymns and is called Melisma, in which several tones are composed for one vowel. Melisma existed in Pharaonic music as stated by “Demetrios the Valerony”, He wrote: "Egyptian priests used to worship their Deities using the 7 vowels, by singing one after the other, producing dulcet sounds by this redundancy".
    Coptic hymns have an extremely musical capacity in expressing
    by tones, rhythms, and scales;
    the lyrics as well as reflecting the spiritual environment and the ritual ambiance.

    Im reading a very good book about ancient pagan worship in Egypt and Ive even been able to mention this and other factors to the Deacons near me that are chanting. :) I'm a woman, which makes the impact all the more surprising to them when I start explaining. 😊 I would like to get in touch with you sometime, George, because I have a variety of musical instruments at home that my Abune blessed so that I can keep up musical knowledge between the times I am not in Church. And thank you SO MUCH for not pushing the vowels out of your nose. It's been agreed between me and a local Coptic Church that we have to guard against sounding like a big nose all the time. 😤

      Thanks for your comment and for your care of our Coptic heritage. you can contact me via email:
      george.kyrillos@orascom.com. Regarding the issue of pushing the vowels thru the deacon's nose, I am trying to help them to fix that via our episodes. (There are 12 episodes for learning them how to sing properly.
