Today would be my mom Gurtrude Giddings 75th birthday sadly she lost her battle to breast cancer in May . I am playing Sparrow songs Tribute to her memory. Mighty Sparrow was her favorite singer I grew up listening to his songs as a little girl we had every record he released. This man I love so much. When I finally met my Caribbean cousins . I grew up in Los Angeles they mostly lived in New York St. Thomas & St. Croix. It was my uncle birthday so I was invited so that they could meet me. That was the best party I had ever been too. I'll always remember the Mr. Walker and to much wood in the fire, well I fell in 💕 Love with Sparrow and his music that was in 1968 an to this day 9-17-2021 I still love him and his music. He's the best ever.

Simply incredible. And that stare! Intense. Did they play nearly 30 minutes at the one tempo without stopping, going from song to song with no breaks?

I had the cjance of hearing him in 1957. I still have a couple of his 78rpm original recordings and Jean & Diana are there!. In 1959 I could travel to Trinidad last time I was thee and also found an LP by RCA with some of his songs (LPB-9035 = Ñuñu, Keep the City Clean, Monica Dodo, Raphaela, etc.) I still have them all.

I can clearly remember waking up early mornings in Grenada to my mother singing either'"Melda oh you making wedding plan" or "Jean and Dina" while she made breakfast in the kitchen.Then on rare occasions ,when he was drunk,my father could be heard singing " drunk and disorderly". And as for me and neighbourhood friends,we use to sing,"you see miss Mary bam bam"as soon as the adults were out of earshot, especially when we went to gather mangoes.
I was just telling my wife about the time I took his album (with those same songs you mentioned) on cassette to school in 1995 and a classmate borrowed and never returned it. The only problem was the tape belonged to my sister. It just shows how his music transcended generations.

I was so fortunate to see him live in 2009 in a park in Queens NY.. I was home and I started hearing the music and I went to see what was going on and it was him performing live in a wheelchair.. I didn’t really know who he was, so I called my mom and she went crazy I had to go pick her up so she can see him and I was amazed at how my mom was enjoying herself.. I started listening to his music on my own and fell in love with it.. some things I didn’t understand so I would ask my mom what it meant and she’ll explain it.. now I’ll listen to him when I’m showering especially when I’m cleaning it motivates me to clean more lol

When he first bought out this song, all Indians., even the pundits made a ruckus about this song! They banned people from even going to listen to this song. It was a fierce time for Mighty song...but as time wore on, and people started listening to the music finally got a grip of it and that there was true love between of all races, things began to notice the reality of this song. I enjoy sparrow singing immensely and always I saw him last at a resturant performing with claypso roze another of my favorite today he is ill and I wish him a speedy recovery.

When he first bought out this song, all Indians., even the pundits made a ruckus about this song! They banned people from even going to listen to this song. It was a fierce time for Mighty song...but as time wore on, and people started listening to the music finally got a grip of it and that there was true love between of all races, things began to notice the reality of this song. I love this song. "Sexy Marajin". ...just LOVE it's purity and joy of the love this man had for this woman, was incredible!!!!!! Mighty Sparrow, you're the best, babes!!!!Bless you, for ever!!!!!

Yes, It is 2019, and the Mighty Sparrow will be 84 on July 9th! - and I am lucky enough to be playing trumpet in his band in New York City July 5, 2019 at Summerstage (Springfield Park - Queens), and July 6 at Joe’s Pub at the public Theater in NYC!)
I enjoy sparrow singing immensely and always I saw him last at a resturant performing with claypso roze another of my favorite today he is ill and I wish him a speedy recovery.
