- Every spring we shear our sheep and alpaca and keep the wool to process it into yarn during the colder months. Tara organizes classes to teach and learn new and old skills as part of our fundraising to help feed the animals that come in to our farm. This is so cool! My paternal grandma used to tell me stories of how her mom raised sheep but she carded the wool by hand. Also, they washed sheep in stream then took to shearing barn.
Her mom dyed the wool & spun it into cloth to sell or make clothes for family.

I used to make butter when I was a child my stepmother had me sit in chair or floor and just rock this gallon jar for a very long time until it started turning into butter stage. Funny thing is now as adult I do not like cow butter.

If you hold onto the wool from drawing into the carder, you get wool building up on the licker, not onto the drum.

Like the butter churn! We make butter for holiday meals. We used heavy cream in peanut butter jars. Pressed into butter mold. My kids liked to make it even today!

Absolutely love the churn!!! I have several ceramic crocks\churns that work by use of a wooden paddle. I had never seen a churn like in the video!!!
Yes, lots of work to make clothes. The plan is to spin and knit later.

I guessed that contraption was a butter churn because I spent time in Morocco. They use animal hides and toss them in the air.
Correct, Tara wants to make some butter with it at some point.
Okay, about the Butter Churn, it takes 5 minutes to make butter out of cream when the cream is ROOM TEMPERATURE. If the cream is cold from the refrigerator, it'll take for freaking EVER. In Junior Girl Scouts, we made butter from cream, salt, and shook it in a Ball Mason Jar, firmly lidded. It took 30+ minutes to warm up and start climbing up the walls of the jar. From there is took only 5 minutes. The salt kills any bacteria that would attempt to grow in the butter. Enjoy!

I’ve been looking for an old butter churn
I love this video and it brings back memories of me spinning as a child. I never knew this process and it makes me want to come and volunteer for experience. I would like to know how to buy a large bag of wool. Thank you for teaching me.
I would check with a local sheep farmer, due to the price of raw wool they have problems even selling it.

Never added it up but for a week, steady
I am in the process of doing this right now and there’s a lot of pieces of twigs and grass and such in the wool I have. The wash with dawn is taking the dirt and lanolin out and then after I dry it is the picking going to remove the small pieces?
You will need to further pick the wool after drying and even after that you will likely still have some. The carding process will remove most of the smaller particles. Each step in the process will remove more of the bits.

We just searched online, there may be some groups in your area that may be able to point you in the right place, locally.
does it still smell like sheep ? id love to keep sheep one day. i have taken care of them but never worked with the wool before (only store bought)

how many hours would you say this whole process takes?
The entire time to process one fleece would probably take about 2 to 3 weeks from cleaning to spinning.
I would have thought the real reason to was to get the dirt out! What is the difference between cutting and pulling it apart used to make small amounts of butter using my blender.
You heat the lanolin which releases the dirt.

Hi, I just got some wool that someone had wrapped in a tarp and wasn't using. There's quite a bit of really small straw pieces in there, I'm picking out the big stuff, but there's like small bits, less than a cm long. Will it come out during washing and carding, or is the wool kinda unusable for making roving? Thanks
The small little bits will come out during the entire process. You will likely have some very small debris remaining at the end but it should not have an impact on spinning the wool.

Is it possible to over wash the wool; not in the sense of pushing/squeezing it, but in the sense of soaking it many times to get the final product as white as possible?
No, the only problem would be that the more you handle it the better the chance of felting it as you mentioned.
@@The10AcreWoods What exactly is felting, and why does that occur? Would felting reverse at all with lots of carding?
Think of felting as "dread locks". It is when the wool gets tangled and matted. A common product made with wool are dryer balls that are purposely felted to be used in your dryer along with optional essential oils. If you search Google for felted wool projects you can find a large assortment. Wow! That guy really likes to point out how the others don't really work hard or their failings. Everyone watches T.V. and just happen to get some of the work done at the same time. The young woman hasn't mastered the hand eye work( she looks fine to me). He, of course, just hasn't the patience for it, which I suspect means he hasn't mastered it.
Will take years to master and teamwork goes along way to processing.

Men say they don't have the patience for a lot of things that traditionally fall to women. Odd! Related: I enjoyed the peek into the way this family does things, but would have liked to hear from the women who actually know how to do them. Mansplaining is a little irritating.
