Voice Lessons: Use the "NG" to Find Mask Resonance & Make Singing Easier

  • THE SEQUEL! I have updated the info in this video with a new video: Here's the link :) • Voice Lessons: Use the...
    UPDATE: I am in the process of changing my name from Tricia Pine to the name I grew up with... Tricia Leines (pronounced "Lioness" or "Line-us")
    Download my FREE vocal warm-up video on my new website: www.TriciaLeines.com
    Do you want to take your voice to the next level? Are you serious about voice lessons? Would you like to study with me? Email me today to find out more information about joining my vocal studio: tricialeinesrejoice@gmail.com
    Finding an easy and resonant “ng” space can help you sing with more freedom… especially on those hard to reach notes.
    Watch the video above for demonstration and tools…
    I am finding in my work that many singers have unnecessary tension in their larynx. This can show up in the voice as a breathy or strained tone. The singer may tire easily or even struggle with chronic hoarseness.
    One way to take the pressure off the larynx and create a clear resonate tone is by making sound through the consonant blend of the “ng.”
    The “ng,” when purely in the nasal passage, is a healthful place to feel or “place “ the sound; not too much air is needed and it can feel small, but the resonance is efficient.
    But sometimes finding the “sweet spot” can be a challenge, and because I want you feel it… here are some tools to help.
    1. While making the “ng” sound, place your fingers on your face around your nose and sense the “buzz” of the sound vibrating in your nasal cavity… it will be subtle.
    2. While making the “ng” sound, plug your nose. The sound should stop completely.
    3. Think of a little tiny puppy, now make a very small whine sound. Use that “whine” space to make the “ng.”
    4. Before making the “ng” sound, drop the jaw and lift the soft palate as if you are yawning. I have found that it is easier to drop into the “ng” from this space.
    Once you have found and easy, focused, and small “ng” space, play with transitioning to a vowel sound. I like to start ahhh. Make your ahhh with a slight drop in the back of the tongue. Then move to other vowels.
    Use an “ng” when warming up and when learning a new song. Try “ng-ing” the entire melody on the ng… then work to the vowels, then add consonants - always filtering through the “ng” space.

    I am a vocal coach and I can't begin to tell you how refreshing it is to hear someone teach forward placement and resonance in the correct and simple way. This is so much of what my students and I do. I will be showing them this video (: thank you Again. You are truly inspiring and remind very much Joyce Didonato, who is my hero.

    wonderfully presented! Ive always had the problem of having my voice either too back or too forward. The NG exercise/technique helped me find that 'middle' space- neither too back or forward- and not to mention a release of pressure off my neck/throat! This exercise is gold

    Thanks for the mask awareness, I found it helpful (especially a mask in these pandemic time). I have a folk song with "been", :"can", "glen", "then" "hen" etc. as the end of each line and found it very difficult to sing on pitch, because it is not the usual ah, ay, ee, eye , oh, ewe. Your tutorial gives an approach, I'm grateful.

    Thanks, Regalo1.9.7.9, for you question. It is difficult to say, as every voice is so different... To really get to the answer to your question, perhaps an Ear Nose and Throat doctor could guide you. I will offer some ideas in hopes of helping... the "ng" may be a challenge for some singers as tongue is involved and if there is tongue, jaw, or larynx tension, a tiny, narrow, pure "ng" may be harder to find. Perhaps a tiny "mmmm" may be better to find that mask resonance. Also, it is not uncommon to hear a "flapping" or "fluttering" around the ears when some singers produce high notes. This may be what you are experiencing.See if you can find the mask resonance in the lower range and gently work you way up. I find that finding the mask resonance takes less work that students think. With a relaxed jaw, larynx and tongue.... that "ng" or "mmmm" is similar to a puppy dog whine or a irritating mosquito buzz... sometimes bending over at the waist and producing the sound "upside down" helps to get the sensation in the mask. Thanks again for connecting. Hope this helps...

    It’s like a butterfly effect, like a very small tiny change you have to do in order to get big results. If you try to do a lot it will only end up not working because the more effort you put in the smaller the results will be. So don’t put so much effort it only requires tiny tiny effort. My teacher always used to say it too “its like you are threading a needle” and I would never understand what she was talking about. But now I do understand it. It’s that singing is actually never requring effort it doesn’t matter how unexperienced you are it never requires effort. It’s not like you will have to put effort until you no longer have to put the effort in. You never have to put too much effort and thats how you find that tongue placement. Great exercise!!!

    The whole "NG, tiny, foward, mask, resonance, placement" is easy to get in higher notes, but not in my lower chest voice. Is "NG" less applicable in lower notes? Also, I find "NG" easy to do, but that placement is not as easy to do while singing certain vowels or words. Again, the lower notes are harder to find the forward placement and thinner more focused sounds.

    • @jazznotes3802
      @jazznotes3802 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct! Mask is easier as you sing in your mid range. Lower chest voice and high head voice pulls away from the mask.

    • @MichaelRainboy
      @MichaelRainboy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the lower chest register you might confuse the right position with the position on which you talk "which is most of the time not the correct singing position with most people". That creates the hard lower notes.
