Fun fact: way back before the official release of Hearthstone, Twilight Drake was a 1/1 and its Battlecry gave it stats equal to you're hand size. This means Dark Alley Pact is basically the return of original Twilight Drake but with a few slight differences. 1. It's a spell. 2. The stats are permanent and not a buff. 3. It's a demon instead of a dragon. 4. This presumably can't be played if you have no other cards in hand while the dragon could. 5. Twilight Drake got an extra +1/+1 campared to this due to its starting stats. Honestly, I just think it's neat that an old version of a card made it back into the game, sort of, and that the thumbnail art is more on point than I intitially thought.
It's also symbolic of the massive power creep in HS. Twilight Drake was nerfed to a 4/x, where x worked the way you described. Also, since its stats were a buff, it was vulnerable to silence and many people played owl or silencer to counter it; Dark Alley Pact is in most situations more powerful than pre-nerfed Twilight Drake. Yet, a 4 mana 8/8 (similar to old handlock's mountain giants) is nowadays just one of the many powerful cards in competitive decks.
