When i was 12 years old , my older cousin had one , he installed a 396 and 4-11,s in the rear . The transmission did not fit into the car , and they had to cut all the metal around the trans , and the stock shifter was like 6 inches in the air over the trans . When he would power brake, the interior of the car would fill up with smoke . Those were fun days. Mike Espo..
I built a lot of funny car kits as a kid in the 70s. The Vega and Monza or some of my favorites body styles. I don’t remember if I’ve ever built this particular one but you did a great job. I never trust the Cap As the color of paint in the can. I think it was a TH-cam video that turned me onto sprain out the color on plastic spoons which now I do religiously as I don’t think I would have the patience to soak a body and strip it Of a previously painted color. I currently use Tamiya spray cans or airbrush apple barrel for my military builds. You’re really turning me on to trying rest oleum as a cheaper alternative. The only thing I’ve ever had issues with buying big cans of paint is the usually go bad by the next time I decide to use them. Little Tamiya cans don’t last as long obviously past a build or two
Stripping Rusto off takes a couple hours in a Super Clean bath, comes off easily. Same as model sprays, a soak in Super Clean and it's gone fast. Tamiya paints though will fight you. Thanks, I appreciate the support and nice words!
WOW, Chris, after enjoying / learning from hundreds of your builds, I see a pattern - it AIN'T the kits, it's YOU. While the kits you have chosen to build for us have all been top drawer productions, it is clearly the way you think about the builds and are able to see "different views" than those suggested by the box art. Of course your talents and experience do help. But you got something cool, man - and I for one THANK YOU FOR SHARING...
Nice job as always. Really enjoy when you throw in the scenes that show how you do the silver trim and back wash. Thank you for doing these build reviews. I was in hobby lobby and there were some youngsters in there buying models for the 1st time and I helped them the best I could , then gave them your info so they could watch your builds.
That was good on you to give those kids advice. Advice that they otherwise may have never gotten. It could possibly lead them becoming life long modelers.
Thanks for revisiting the detail work. Us latecomers to your channel have learned a lot from listening but it’s nice to see it done. Just a thought, looking at the placement of the scoop I would suggest as well as nicely displaying the engine this scoop would be in a driver’s line of sight so a clear plexi scoop would allow for better vision. A thought for anyone making the decision whether to paint or not.
This car takes me back to the good old days at the local tracks down around Tampa Bay watching these cars run on a quarter mile track excellent job Chris!!
Great build as always! I've noticed you're adding more info on how you do things, which I'm still trying to find my "groove" on how I build. The Mrs got me that paint booth for my birthday so I can paint inside, where it's warmer than the garage! Enjoyed it! Can't wait for the next one!
Didn't know that was a Vega Wagon funny car kit when first saw it online on box looked like pro street or bracket still setup if there still available in January might get one as parts & donor for my other builds by way luv paint job on this one . @@ronburley7026 I might be too late but the work stand in his videos is made by Tamiya (spl.?). I purchased mine on eBay and the price was pretty reasonable, it comes with a decent selection of spring clips for holding small parts plus a separate body mount that replaces the flat turntable.
I remember the Vega's when they were new. It was such a crappy car & aluminum engine they didn't last too long. They were not to successful until they took the light body, built custom frames and installed a real race engine. Great build Chris, only you can do it the best.,
Hey good buddy! I never thought I'd hear the words "Chevy Vega" and "wheelie bars" in the same sentence. I was a teen when those things were coming off the assembly lines, (I graduated H.S. in 1976) and my high school friends always said it was Chevy's version of a PINTO. Flash forward 100 years and who cares about public opinion of the real vehicle? That's a SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET model and that's the beauty of our hobby. Would love to see you build a YUGO TURBO...0 to 60 in 25 minutes! LOL! P.S. if ANYONE actually makes a kit of a Yugo Turbo I'll drive to Wisconsin and eat my hat in front of you.
Awesome. I’m normally a circle track guy, but I have to have this one. Reminds me of kits I built as a kid. Also thanks for showing people you can paint chrome and you don’t need to de-chrome it. As always a pleasure seeing your builds. Not a model goes by I don’t do sub assemblies for painting. I also now have a full cup of markers thanks to you. Our pleasure, and have a great Holiday season.
Round 2 fairly recently reissued the stock MPC '78 Monza "hatchback" which was a rebranded Vega (the "real" Monza was called the 2+2) - their kit even has the Vega wheels and aluminum engine (the real car had an Iron Duke). I have a spare one I want to kitbash with this for a stock wagon.
You know man, what I like about your videos-I know I've said it before, but you make them SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO entertaining with the music & what you say during. Street drove it and raced it for 10 12 yrs miss it badly, especially the 2 ft in the air off the starting line. Gonna buy one and use the body to make another more accurate replica of my old hot rod
Nice build! I enjoyed seeing your paint selections. I wish I could build one out of the box, but I just cant and therefore it takes forever. I was trying to figure out how to tuck those tires and lower it while watching!! Thanks for a good video.
Hey HPI Guy. Wanted to wish you and your family a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Keep up the great model videos. Look for all new ones in the new year. Take Care.

I am curious. My son wants to build a staging lane bracket race scene. Is there any way you could give us an idea of what drag kits that body will fit on? THe Vega wagon bracket car is a personal fav, and I would like to build one for his scene

No idea, but I don't use that primer, maybe that has an effect. Most of the 2X brands dry really fast if it's not humid or super cold or laid on too thick.
I was thinking, why dont the AMT's,Revells,Monograms of the world make motor kits .For examp: The kit would come with 3 Chevy engines with everything to build 3 complete engines. It would also come with spark plug wires, wire looms, spark plug boots, photo etch parts, pre-drilled distributor and car co. decals for the air cleaners, radiator frame. I think this would sell GREAT! Why should they sit by watching the little guys make all the money from resin when they can really open this hobby up. For example: 1 box could contain 1-3o2 1-350 & 1-400. with blower and tunnel options, carbs, AND photo etch parts. The box art would be AWESOME ! They could also do a detail upgrade kit with nicely detailed batteries,distributors/coils,carbs..and so forth. They could add decals for the oil filter, batt. I truly think there is money to be made off this hobby. I know there are MANY cottage industries make some really cool stuff but not enough. I wish the young guys today would put away their stupid X-BOX's and Play station, sit down with pops,or son and build a model or 2. My question to a gamer is.....once you win a game then what ? You have ABSOLUTELY nothing to show for spending countless hours playing a video game that you will forget the next day. Atleast scale model building you have something to show for ALL the time you put into it AND can save it to pass on to your kids, grand kids. It REALLY REALLY frosts my balls when people call car models ,toys ! NO.....ITS 3D ART asswipe ! Kids cant do most of the incredible things they do with scale models ! Sorry lol I got on a rant I had no intention doing so but I rolled with it. Hpiguy, as I know you will..... Keep up the great content . It is extremely informative for us newbees and intermediate builders.👍😎

The colour you used on the cage looks like metallic granite effect? Two tones of colour.. Grey/silver/black
All paints are named in the painting section and shown on screen as I work on details.
I love that green! Do you sand between color coats? How soon do you paint the color coat over the primer? Thanks.
Check out my video on painting with cheap spray cans.
That should help.
Short story, no, I spray and pray. No fancy work or sanding, etc.
Thanks!

ABSOLUTELY nothing to show for spending countless hours playing a video game that you will forget the next day.
Sorry lol
I got on a rant I had no intention doing so but I rolled with it.
Hpiguy, as I know you will.....
Keep up the great content .
