- This guy had been in the hospital for a long time. His dog missed him a lot, but when he finally came back home, his pup didn't recognize him. Luckily, when the dog got a closer look of him, it jumped into his arms and kissed him lovingly.

@@davide7708 try going competitive nose smelling competitions. I can actually smell something like cheese from like 8 meters away which shouldn’t be possible but I can. I can also smell what different people smell like and recognize them from their scent alone.

Dogs know what time you are supposed to get home based on how much your smell has fainted. They have absolutely no sense of time, but have an extreme sense of smell.

My daughter moved away 4 years ago and her dog stayed with me. He loves to lay in her old room and can recognize the sound of her car in the driveway whenever she visits

I never get tired of seeing that instant change in mood, when the dog realizes it's his owner. Just, in the blink of an eye, he goes from scared and hesitant, to excited and playful. That's true love, right there.
This is probably my favorite dog/owner reunion video. You can see the dog approach him with guarded curiosity, like he wonders if it might be him. Then that exact moment when he can smell him and knows for sure, and then it's just unbridled joy. 💗 Makes me cry every time.

The nose (both humans and dogs) have a very strong and short path to the "memory center" of the brain, which is why you can sometimes remember a particular smell when recollecting a memory, and why a smell can send you back to a random memory 10 years ago, in an instant.

This made me tear up. I went through something in my life and was not able to see my childhood dog for a little over 3 years. He was there through all of my ups and downs. As soon as he recognized me he went absolutely nuts! Just like this encounter here 🥲 my mother said she has not seen him this happy since I’ve been gone. Rest In Peace Toro. He is now gone but never forgotten 😞❤️
Something similar to this happened to me back in 1970. We had a small mixed-breed dog named 'Ginger'. She was definitely a one-family dog! Anyone outside the family was 'The Enemy' and we had to be careful that she never escaped into the front yard. In February of that year, I joined the Navy and reported for 10 weeks of boot camp in San Diego. When I returned home, Ginger did not recognize me, either by sight or sound, and wanted to tear me apart. So, my sister got her onto her metal chain and held her firmly while I let her sniff the back of my hand. INSTANT recognition! She instantly went into the 'Where have you been' mode you saw in this video.

That is a dog for you. And that is the reason why I love dogs. I was gone from home for four months helping my dad with some things around his house. I have four dogs, and when I got home, they literally threw themselves at me in a similar manner. No, they didn’t growl and bark like the dog in the video, but were all over me the same way. This is so funny, the dog’s thinking, “Who is this stranger?” Then gets close enough to smell him, immediately recognized him, and proceeds to wag his tail so hard his butt is following it. Scent is a powerful thing, and it triggers a lot of memories, especially in humans.

This is lovely A similar thing happened to me. My brother had a jack Russell terrier and I spent a lot of time walking her and looking after her. I like to think next to my brother I was her favourite human. When I married I moved to Australia and it was 4 years before I came back to visit family We were at a big gathering when my brother walked in with his dog. I didn't speak and she went around the room sniffing and saying hi to everyone. Then she went and sat across the room by my brother. After a few seconds it was as though some thing clicked in her brain and she recognised me just from that brief sniff. She literally launched herself onto me from across the room and began madly licking my face and whining. It was so special and even though she is long passed away I will never forget the best greeting I've ever had in my life.

@@arwwn4493 cats just need a chance. Some are as friendly as dogs. I’ve noticed that male cats tend to be more outgoing & friendly. I wasn’t a cat person because I grew up with dogs & always did outdoor activities with dogs (hiking, going to the parks, car rides, etc), but learned as an adult that cats can make a house feel like a home.
Man don’t you just love how nice it is to see the dog light up & see the guy smile knowing his dog remembered his scent! Dogs are amazing
