  • In my next adventure I visit Stoballs (Lower Beat) on the River Tay. On the Lower Beat is the awesome Campsie Linn and the legendary Linn Pool. At Campsie Linn, the highest volume waterfall in Britain, the whole of the Tay is forced through a narrow gap in a rock ledge and gushes out into a huge boiling cauldron, the Linn Pool. Set against the backdrop of Stobhall Castle, Taymount House and steeply sloping wooded banks the scenery is positively breath-taking.
The river was much lower than when I fished the Tay in 2022, but it meant that I could cover the water with the fly rod - much preferred! Also, Theo joined me on the bank for the morning.
    My set up today:
    - Shakespeare Oracle Spey Rod 14'9 10wt Scandi
    - Shakespeare Oracle 2
    - Rio Scandi Shooting Head
    - Airflo Super Dri Ridge Running Line 115ft.
    Ticket Costs etc:

My channel is called Cornish Chris the Fish. I am a Cornishman venturing out beyond the Duchy to experience life on the road full time touring in my Caravan Dalleth Arta, fly fishing and vlogging my adventure. I am a novice Salmon Fisherman so join me as I experience the topsy turvey world of Salmon Fishing. I am charting my fishing adventures and will profile each fishery that I attend. I may even catch a few fish 😀

Another great video Chris, some amazing looking water there, never fished Stobhall, thinking of booking something now for March. Thanks for taking the time to produce & share.

Very nice video and I like your salmon fishing philosophy - enjoy the fishing and fly casting and if you get a fish that's an absolute bonus!

That looks like a lovely bit of water to fish. I've booked a boat on the Findhorn through Atholl Sporting they seamed very easy to deal with. Hope we both get some silver soon.

Another belter Chris! They say the salmon is a fish of 10,000 casts, well, I've counted every cast since your last fish and you're at 19,703 so that next one is coming soon. Keep the faith, tight lines 🤣👍

19703?!?!? Wow, and they were just the ones on film, i must be at least 50,000 by now 🤣 thanks Steve 👍

I fished that exact pool about 15 years ago. Caught sod all, but I would have happily paid the asking price just to be there. My old fishing buddy and I would stop by the Tay whenever we could, just to watch it go past. I will be fishing the Dunkeld stretch for trout once the spring comes.

Occasionally I used to enjoy a pint in a local pub which had the original cast of a 50lb fish caught by a Major Frank Pullar. From the Upper Eel Brig Pool in, if my memory serves me right, 1922.

Hi Chris, could I ask a quick filming question re the gopro? I was wondering do you keep the wingslayer sponge on permanently or judge it by the conditions? Many thanks.

Yes I do! I find it's really good at extending the battery life during really cold weather.

what stunning beat. and enviroment. i am so envius.
regarding your reel. it seems to me that you didnt have it serviced from last season. i belive i picked up the sound of a bad needle bearing then. and it have been persisten ever since. and it may have been the cause of your issue with the "bird`s nest". it would be a nigthmare if you had a fish on, and that happened. the needle bearing is a easy change. so if that is the issue, then its a easy fix. but your talking about getting another reel. and i agree. go for a higher qualety one. its typical of trout fishermen to look at the reel and just say that its only for holding line. for salmon fishing that saying dont hold true. so my sugestion is to get a new reel. reapair the current one and have it as a spare. keep backing on tough.
your talking with the ghilly about fishing in norway. if you decide to realize that tougth. i have a few suggestion for you.

Thanks for taking the time for such an indepth response going to the tackle shop nearby tomorrow to have a look. Fortunately my friend Russ has leant me a reel for the time being 👍 would be great to connect over the Norway trip idea. Likewise, when you visit in 2024 👍
