Your smile to this song says it all. I was smiling just like you when I first watched this. Such a great live performance with so much energy. James Brown an absolute legend.

Nice reaction! I’m one of Mr. Brown’s biggest fans since I was 12 years old in 1968. I saw him live in concert about 100 times and have everything he recorded. He was 41 years old here. They cut out the beginning of the payback to fit into the movie. The payback came out in 1974 and it went to number one on the soul charts and number 26 on the pop charts.

He was 41 here??? Man, he was so fit! Those splits and how he got back up from them was wild! 😳

A mustache! Never saw him in one. He had the dance moves. He did have a huge group of musicians and dancers in his shows. My first introduction to him was in The T. A. M. I. shoe, which played at movie theatres. Went out the next day and git his album.

Yes, that was his band at the time the JB’s. Typically at that time he had at least a 12 piece band. In the late 1960s he could have as many as 18.

His band was subjected to harsh fines and discipline during rehearsals and performances.
Legends Maceo Parker and Bootsey Collins were famously with him.
Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones produced an excellent biopic with outstanding writing, music, and performances...."Get on Up". Chadwick Bozeman as JB slayed.

Nice, I bet it was necessary for everyone to be on time and ready to go. There are so many moving parts! What a legend!

All of the musicians in his bands over the years were great. This iteration was a tight and funky as any of them. Bootsy was already out of the band by this time and joined up with Funkadelic. Watch the great series Tales From The Tour Bus ( Mike Judge ) season 2 where they talk about Bootsy getting fired by James Brown along with the band. Hilarious.

Oh, FYI he doesn’t say I don’t know karate but I know crazy he says I don’t know karate but I know ka-razor. If you notice when he says that the band does slashing emotion, and he does a karate kick.

You see who both Prince and Michael Jackson were influenced by. Yes, the two mega stars were hugely influenced by the godfather of soul. Prince and MJ at some point back in the 80s, both showed up at a James Brown concert. James found out MJ was there and called him up on the stage. MJ whispered to JB that Prince was out in the audience and he called Prince up on stage as well.
