  • In this video, I show you how to troubleshoot the cold control or thermostat on your Whirlpool Refrigerator. If your food is freezing in the refrigerator compartment or the whole machine is not cooling at all, the cold control thermostat cold be defective.
The cold control is located behind the refrigerator temperature control knob. It has two wires that attach to it and it tells the compressor and the evaporator fan when to turn on and off.
Here is where you can order appliance parts

I appreciate your “real-time” tutorials. For most of us, it’s our first (and only) time, we’re scared to death, and we go slow. Watching you take your time, allows me to take my time. Eventually I get the job done and look like a hero to my family. You’ve got the touch of a great teacher. Thank you for making these videos.

Bill, This is the best tutorial for troubleshooting the temperature control knob I have ever seen. To show you how naive I am I just assumed the Freezer control knob made the freezer colder or warmer whichever way you turned the knob. Now I know the refrigerator knob does it. The knobs should display a better way of saying that. My problem is the refrigerator is freezing everything so I am turning the Freezer knob to the default setting and I'll see if that cures the problem. If it doesn't I'll be ordering a new Refrigerator cold control knob from you. Again thank you for an excellent video.

Thanks Bill. This is EXACTLY what I needed. I have a customer who banged the bottom of the control box when it would shut down and it would work for a day and then she'd have to do it all over again. I diagnosed it correctly but couldn't figure out how to get the control box apart to get to those two horizontal screws so I could get to the cold control. You gave me the missing piece! Great job and thank you for your service to our country!

Bill, I's like to say 1,000 thank you's for your tutorial on the Whirlpool side-by-side no cooling situation!!! I know a thing or 2 about controls and appliances myself but your real-time tutorials are a HUGE time saver and I thank you for them. I used the link to try and buy the parts. Hopefully, they kicked some $$ your way (though I could not tell if it did or not). Thanks again! Elliott S.

Great video! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise. You saved me a lot of money on repairs. Got the part on eBay for $9. Had to adjust that little calibration screw though on it to make it less cold. As some have commented, these replacement thermostats seem to be calibrated to the maximum cold setting making your fridge ice up even on 1 or lower on the dial. About a 3/4 clockwise turn solved this problem for me.

Thanks, bill. Your instructional was very helpful. Here's a tip a pro ac/frig guy gave me for the hardest part of the job: Threading the copper tube thru the plastic sleeve - put dish soap on the tube and it'll slide right in with no deleterious effects on proper thermostatic operations.

Hi Bill, excellent video, right speed, not too slow, neither too fast, just at the right speed. The metal wire does not have "freon" or the modern day refrigerant, which is most likely R-134a, less harmful to the ozone layer like freon. The metal wire should contain an inert gas that expands and contracts with temperature controlling the "coldness" of the fridge.

Thanks for your video. Before i took the risk to fully remove this part, I had the though to see if the switch contacts might have lost their connectivity due to oxidation from 40 years of use. I merely turned the dial full cw, then ccw, and repeated about 4 or 5 times. plugged in the refrigerador, and it began to function again. I then bought the part to have should we ever need to replace it. though in all honestly i feel it was a mere oxidation problem. Probably that part will last another 40 years.

Hey Bill - Great videos. Been repairing all my appliances for as long as I can. Still very helpful. Meanwhile I've been battling a whirlpool side by side, defrost element not coming on. Replaced defrost timer and cold control, about 7 days later temp in freezer rose, coils caked. Replaced defrost thermostat. 7 days later, same condition. New defrost thermostat tested bad, replaced. Again days later, same condition. Noticed I could tap the cold control and that would cause the circuit to close. Again replaced cold control. Again days later, same condition. So now I try to remember to manually engage the defrost cycle every so often for 30 minutes and then disengage and all works well. What might I be missing? I think I have replaced everything that could have been suspect.

Good info. My new one took the freezer down to -30F quite quickly. I have set the freezer at 50% and hoping things settle down. Next time I will look for a unit with independent control of the compartments. This scheme with the one t-stat and then a vent doesn't feel like engineering to me.

Thank you brother! I think that part at 0:35 answered my question. I have a Kenmore 106.74264400 refrigerator. I seemed to be running a lot, so I wondered if the thermostat was working right. I read online that one clear sign the thermostat is shot, is if you turn the knob and there is no "click". Well I turned both knobs (fridge and freezer), and for the freezer knob, there was no "click" lol. I assume now there is no thermostat, just a damper control

Thanks for this info. My whirlpool is a top freezer model, but it sounds like this might be my problem part. The past few days the compressor & fan have been kicking off and never come back on by themselves, eventually thawing out my freezer. But when I fidget with the control knob, suddenly it kicks back on for awhile...presumably after some thermostat somewhere opens up, or it completes its cycle, or however these things work I guess. Anyway, in the past week or two prior to the onset of this apparent control knob problem, I had noticed the fridge making sort of a labored whining sound (like a motor under too much resistance, maybe) especially when the compressor starts up. Do you think that is a bad sound?? Maybe I have a compound problem??

The bit I don't understand is how you test the EXISTING temp control to see if it is actually bad. Your test was done on another control, which I assume was good?
So, is this correct ... if the meter shows 0.L in the off position and 0.000 in any on position, the control is good?
What reading would you see on a BAD temp control, that needs replacement? Thanks.

    Hi Bill
Thanks for the information on the cold control thermostat. I ordered a new one and replaced ice intermittent one.
I have a question about the ice maker. It does not dispense ice thru the chute. The auger does not rotate when engaged. I have removed the bin and the metal tab on the motor does rotate when the door switch is engaged and I engage the lever in the door. What is the probable culprit on this?
Thanks for your thoughts and input.
