I love seeing tenpin bowlers try to bowl candlepins. Most are aggravated at first but want to try again. Just because the balls are small doesn't mean it's easy.

Candlepin centers are so cool because they are generally older. This center doesn't have arrows on the lanes! A lot of centers also have the ball returns on 1, 2-3, 4-5, etc...because it was easier for the pinboys to go back and forth between lanes that way (lanes 1-2 etc.)

At the NBHFM, they had 8 lanes in the basement, and 4 of those were for Candlepin and Duck Pin bowling. It was a BLAST.

I'm 34 and from Minnesota. 10-pin is the only bowling I've ever known, but the last month or so I've seen a lot of candlepin videos from the 80s and 90s, and now I want to try it really bad!
@@Cory_Springer i think you would but don't expect the higher scores like you get in tenpin. in candlepin the scores are less by about 100 pins, like the pros in our type of bowling have averages between 118-130. if you're ever out this way in new england give it a try.
It is,and it isn't. It is in that anyone from 2 to 102 can roll a 2.6 pound ball at the pins. But as a professional candlepin bowler, it can be very frustrating. Look at the 4.59 mark. Plucking a 2 or 3 pin without taking anything else is common. Or shooting the dead wood can be challenging to. For instance say you are shooting at the 8 pin and a piece of dead wood is in front at an angle, or whatever. That shot isn't going. But in cases like splits like the dreaded 7-10. If there's wood,it might go.
Duckpins run ~20 pins higher per-game average than candlepin. The throwing mechanics are very similar, and good bowlers in one code tend to be good in the other.
No video but I believe Walter Ray JR. Bowled candlepin on a regular basis when vacationing on Cape Cod. Or he used to. And Belmonti tried his two hand technique, but the ball went left,or right a few lanes.

So how much did bowling candlepin mess up your regular shot rhythm? Every time I bowl candlepin, the next time I bowl tenpin....takes a game or two to ditch the candlepin bad habits. Duck pins would be harder than candlepin, but not many of those places left. Cool video! Love seeing PBA pros try other areas of bowling.
I grew up on 5 pin, switched as a teen to 10 pin. Hey Packy. I have stumbled on these two videos where you're doing candlepin bowling and I think for being a regular tenpin bowler you're not doing too bad I sure as heck don't think I'd be doing any better. I haven't done it yet...but I feel duck pin might also be challenging, maybe not as challenging as candle pin, also the way to go is speed and accuracy. I feel like if it was for money you would kill in it Packy!!
Duckpin is fun. As a candlepin bowler, the slightly larger ball used in duckpins is difficult, but when I’ve bowled duckpins, it appears that they either allow candlepin balls, or have a range of diameters they allow. Anyway, I don’t like to say that any of these games are “harder” or “easier.” To be a good tenpin bowler, you have to have a consistent strike ball, and pick up every spare that you can. In candlepins, you basically need to aim for the head pin, and hope for the best, and pick up spares when you can. Duckpins certainly requires more strikes than candlepins, and so you have to be on the head pin big time. They are all great games. I understand how the lower scoring can be frustrating to the tenpin bowler though. I don’t think there has ever been a really good candlepin bowler with a hook. There used to be some who had a slow ball with a little bit of backup on it (left to right for a righty), but no righty with a right to left hook has ever been particularly successful. You just can’t control it with the size of the ball, and the lack of oil on the lane.
@@johnm112 I’ve bowled ducks for the past 20 years and was practically raised in a duckpin home because both my mom and dad bowled ducks their entire lives.
