    Sooo... with that guitar you get a Gibson Jr two p-90 pickups without a Gibby logo and with a proper neck joint at the headstock, setup with that same care (with intonation off), with cheap ass tuners that work (like a new Gibson but the Gibby one will break on you) and a clunky bridge that is ok but might be upgraded later on, unlike the Gibson that does have a quality bridge. All that for less than 1/3 of the price of a Gibson. SOLD! :)

      These are $233 and a Gibson equivalent is $1,699 lol. More than 7 times the price. That being said, these HB's don't compete whatsoever in sound quality and electronics with the Gibson. That Epiphone Tv yellow Special is the sweet spot at around $400.

    Harley benton seem to a real contender in the market these days. Imo they have taken a house brand to a new level in the guitar world. Forget good for the money, these guitars are on a power with brands at 2 and 3 times the price.

      @@aparise1 youre an isolated case. a lot of others have received guitars in terrible condition with all sorts of dings, cracks, bodged jobs gluing the body together and terrible blemishes on the wood or the paintwork -- guitars with artefacts/blemishes that should honestly be B-stock but arent. then Customer Service will fight you went you want a refund or a replacement...
      I have heard these things happening too many times to have any confidence in Thomann should things go wrong.
      With that said though. I have also heard stories where they really shone and did right by the customer. when things went wrong.
      Henning gets away with it because he is based in Germany where Thomann is so he could easily pop in and trade the defective guitar for another. A lot of other people dont have that kind of luxury as they live in other parts of the world and its quite often these customers that get shafted by Thomann. Im not saying that this always happens, But more often then not it does.

      @@Rose.Of.Hizaki Maybe that's the case with transatlantic transport, I don't know. But overall that doesn't sound like Thomann at all. I don't think it happens "more often then not". It sounds more like you have read some stuff and made your conclusions based on these accumulated cases without taking into account all the pleasant experiences you just didn't notice because it's the bad ones that stick out. And in that sense you could say that QC with basically every mass-produced overseas guitar brand is bad, since you can accumulate bad examples with pretty much everyone of those brands. Yesterday I checked a used guitar marketplace and found lots of 2019-2020 indonesian-made Ibanez models with bad QC and obvious flaws. That doesn't mean the brand is crap now.

    Observations of mine - not a fan of the bridge, have a Stewmac lightning bolt waiting for me in New York - a friend is bringing it back (I'm near London - only 3,000 miles!). The middle position on the pick-ups gives, in my view, a strat-y tone, unexpected bonus there. Really can't fault it - the bridge is a personal preference thing, I know some really like it!

    Finally got to set up my HB SC special faded white. I have just realised that Thomann's deal with D'Addario for strings seems to have ended and the guitars now ship with what look like (horrible) basic stainless steel strings. They are very bright sounding. Also Henning as you said the intonation has been paint-by-numbers set. The saddles are just were they look like they might be right. On mine the shop fitted strings were all 13 cents sharp. A set of half way decent strings and intonation correction makes a HUGE difference to the sound and feel of this guitar.

    Great choice by HB that they didn’t put overwound p90 in it like many other companies do. (I guess, based on the sound they’re even slightly underwound). They sound really nice and have the brightness that I like. I hope to buy one in the next few months.

    • @rowlandstraylight
      @rowlandstraylight 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Overwound pickups sell guitars in stores, but with more output from increased inductance there's an inescapable lowering of the cut-off frequency, and it's not something you can get back. You can always tame a bright pickup with that oft forgotten knob called "tone" and get more crunch with the gain knob on an amp or by using a pedal.
      P90s are already quite dark, and by doubling down on that there's a real danger of getting lost in the mix in a band context.

The yellow one ain´t got the same neck specifications as the white one.The yellow has the "Fat neck", the white is more modern thin shaped.I got both in comparison here....I prefer the yellow...much more neck flesh action and mids.Both needed a Bridge intonation setup and some neck cleaning. Now she´s burning HOT in between a Hendrix Strat and a Gibson LP .The Pu´s are not too bad,tune them carefully and they will come on strong.The best replacement part is another bridge,cause this is the tonebuilder on this construction...TonePros AVT2M CH fits ! or the ABM 3024na .

    I own two low-end "Tribute" Gibson Les Pauls, made in a time (2013) when you could buy them brand new for under a grand. I get that Gibson can charge whatever they want, and right now you can buy a new GLP Tribute for $1,200, which isn't crazy money. HOWEVER, Gibson is charging $1,600 for a Les Paul Special, which is beyond greedy. This is supposed to be a low end Gibson which normal people can afford. I hope no one is stupid enough to spend $1,600 on one. The Harley Benton looks good to me - I'd love to try one.

  • @ResoBridge

    I think HB chose that bridge because it looks like a copy of the Leo Quan Badass bridge. Quite a few Gibson fixed bridge players fitted these in the old days. They were the only option at the time for a 6 way on a wrap over fixed bridge Gibson. I'm happy with mine, although I have fixed any tilt (almost all those Gibson style wrap over bridges tend to tilt) by using bolts and a stack of washers for a height spacer, under each end of the bridge.

They are still cheap, but these are supposed to be cheapest student models, because they are simpler to manufacture (no maple tops, no binding, no bridge, no trem,...). Not bad - I was interested in such a model and I tested the HB SC Special TV, too. The competitor was the 2020 Epiphone Les Paul Special TV Yellow - and this one won!
    The HB was really good, but as Henning stated, the tuners are not the best and its better to change them.
    I know, the price difference is 170 €, but when I held both guitar in my hands and played them I could feel and hear the difference ! And the color is "more TV Yellow"!
    Don´t get me wrong - the Harley Benton is a really good guitar for the money, but for me the Epi "feels" better, better quality of the hardware and the P-90s are really good.
    So - if you want to pay the lowest price for such guitar you can take the HB without regrets - for some more take some money more and try the Epiphone!
    Take care of you and stay healthy!

      @@chrismurphy128 you are absolutely right, but my specific instrument required intervention that usually someone let do to a liuther. I did it myself for fun and profit, but on a cheap instrument adding 50-60€ for a liuther makes it not so cheap, in the end. Yes, one says "I'm buyng a cheap instrument, there well be some compromises", but in my case I had a very well done instrument with this big problem which, for what I saw, is common to other players.
      I think that the bridge is the culprit of all problems: it's too high and you can't adjust it. Alternatives costs half the guitar, on Thomann (damn, the PRS bridge alone costs as much as this guitar!), but adjusting the bridge pickup height, adding some foam under the bridge pickup, adjusting pickup pole height seemed to fix the problem at nearly zero cost.
      That said, if at Thomann they fix the bridge problem in a second batch of instruments, this is hands down the best guitar of this kind that you can buy for the price.

I own both gibsons and harley bentons. they all rock! But you're not getting "the same thing' basically.

    • @TwansMusic
      @TwansMusic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davestephens3246 I never said that being made in the USA means anything. I just said it adds to the price. Which it does. And so does the case, again, adds to the price. Nitro is a relatively expensive finish to apply, again NONE of these things make a guitar BETTER! They just mean it's more expensive. I'm not claiming a gibson is a better instrument. It's a more expensive one and there's reasons for it. I personally think polyurethane lacquer is a dealbreaker on a guitar. that said chinese guitars are so damn cheap you cant fault them for having a poly finish, they're still awesome guitars!

I’m contemplating adding an SG but refuse to give Gibson my money. So it’s either I buy a used Gibson or I try out the HB. Thanks and I love you. Stay safe and I’ll ttys.

    Would be nice if they put time stamps on the videos. I personally would like to skip the long intro and the playing demo.
    FYI, the scratchy feel on bending strings on new hb guitars is not so much the frets but the fretboard. I put a little fretboard oil , even without removing the installed strings and perfectly smooth in minutes

    I can't even imagine buying a Gibson when I can throw a rock in any direction and hit a guitar that sounds and plays as well. Rock hitting a Gibson... may be an improvement to knock it back into tune.

    • @Anjohl
      @Anjohl 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will definitely get a much higher quality instrument with Gibson, plus the instrument will be a much better investment, often appreciating in value. If you are just buying to keep for yourself, the import guitars are great, but a Gibson is a Gibson.
