  • I've just finished building my DIY cargo bike and here it is! Very simple economical build and rides great. A cargo bike can be homemade for less than £250!
I wanted to transport the kids / things around town but didn't want to take the car! I love cycling so thought a cargo bike would fit the bill.
I looked at the price of cargo bikes available new and the cheapest I could see was £2000! A bit much for me, so I had a go at building a DIY built cargo bike.
I purchased an old bike off a work colleague and used this as a donor. I found a steel frame was easier to work with when on a budget. Most the other bits were purchased new from Ebay.
I'm really happy with the final bike and am surprised how well it rides! It's not really that heavy and does not flex much. Stability is really good and gets better with more cargo.
Next, I will put a slightly better front brake on, wing mirror, stronger side stand and some lights

I especially like that you used so much from the donor bike!
In addition, it has become a harmonious bike to look at :)

Like it. I might build one myself. I built a tandem once with two Raleigh Twenties. I built a Stirling engine too but it was about 100 times smaller than yours.

Maybe there's a connection! Stirling engine owners also like cycling :)

If you build a sufficiently light Stirling engine for it, it will be a great vehicle

Yes, I think your right! It would be great fun. Your new engine looks good, I keep checking in for the next update. I'm about to start building my new stirling engine and will also be posting progress.

What I'd like is a stirling generator that could power an electric hub via batteries as a buffer

How long is the 40mm box tube and the angle back up to the steering tube and what’s the length of the steering drag link bar? Building starts as soon as I find these three things out. Got an old cct atb with failed frame, this is its next likely life.

Hi James, Not wanting to be the one that's holding up your project I rushed outside to measure it up! 40mm box is 100cm long (horizontal piece), Angle is 120 degrees and link bar is just over 100cm. Good luck and stay safe : )

Very nice! I built one, but with a 20 inch BMX front end. Always thought a 26 inch front end would be nice...the 20 inch front on mine can be pretty jarring on bumps!
As an aside, is that a model railroad around your house?

The wheel size is a compromise with these. Because I've used a bigger wheel I've lost a bit of luggage space and the steering bar needs to be bigger to accommodate the wheel. Have you seen those suspension 20" front ends? Yes, that's a 5" railway : )

@@ShanePomeroy Yes, I actually have one hanging on the wall waiting...I have to re-do the head tube since the suspension fork is a tad taller than the regular BMX fork. I hope it'll be worth the extra work and slightly more weight...these 20 inch suspension forks are hardly "state-of-the-art" haha.
Love the model railway! We need more garden trains in the world!
