I have used this lens now for about 3 weeks and I absolutely love it. I am an architectural photographer and this is my dream come true. I also own the 14-24mm F mount and have always been frustrated with the bulbous front lens. It gets terrible lens flare. That has gone away with this lens and I now add a CPL filter to this and it is the perfect storm! This is an Uber sharp lens from side to side. I don't see any vignetting.
I've had mine for a couple of weeks for my Z6 II. Very sharp! Being easy to carry around cannot be understated. And the ability to put a protective filter and/or polarizer on the front of a full-frame 14mm??!? That's insane!
I personally found that when I first started photography , (1976) later much later came reviews which where always on my screen . (Your channel came later but is now included). The next thing I found I had to do was swapping and so then selling on my lenses to purchase the latest and greatest. The thing about the Nikon Z ii and I guess all top mirror less cameras is their secret is in the soft wear. Setting on top range mirrorless camera make as much difference to the final take as do the lense you have on your camera body. Only later Lightroom comes into play with the final edit. Knowing how to use the different foucs setting is going to yeld great rewards sharpness wise . The sharpness of the less helps, for sure, but today the camera can help you get the best bang for your buck out of the lenses you already have in your bag. Ask your self am I going to get up at 3.30am to catch the sunrise . In summer? , may be even then at F4.you may find using a few other light adjusts may help out .nourt..to .. infinity at f4 is not going to lose you to much if your compensate. Saying how fast that sun hits the sky .All this said the Z range camera has you pointed out with the correct viltrox mount ( the one with the autofocus button on it in one of your past vides) allows older lenses to make reappence. In all honesty experience this tells us with lenses it's never going to be a done deal . But I like both of your photos you pop up .. this is what inspires people to what to take such photos for themselves.so may be a nice little montage at the end will help us viewers to dream a little while at the same time feeling inspired. I like the expression stop wider and closer view. For new comers it may help them get the message.sorry for my rant love the work you both do thanks .
Now that I have the Z cameras - I sold my 14-24 f/2.8 and 24-70 f/2.8 f mount lens and purchased the 24-70mm f/2.8 S and I will pick up the cheaper/lighter 14-30mm f/4 S and I will continue to sell off my legacy f mount lens as new S lenses become available. The FTZ is a blessing but in the field, it is also a pain to switch between S an F lenses.
I found the compact nature of the z 24-70 f/4 to be an excellent size for travelling & I’m sure the z 14 -30 f/4 will be the same. However the dilemma is for example that being so use to f mount 2.8 , I have become something of a lens snob made even worse by how nice a lens the z 24-70 f/2.8 seemed to be even though I’m not at f/2.8 all the time. With either 24 -70 I’m sure the f/4 will be fine. I have the f mount 14-24 f/2.8 & I need to be careful for the sun for the bulbous front element, I’d be interested to know if you have any such issues with the z f/4 .
Looks very tempting and I myself will have it as a rental for an upcoming Joshua Tree Astrophotography tour. f4 is the new f2.8 they say - we shall see but if it works well on the stars then it would be a no-brainer for me. Looking forward to your starry skies shots!
Good video and youtube channel. I have a Z6 and both 24-70 lens and they are great. I am really thinking about adding the 14-30 F4 to my Z kit for ultra wide shots, because of the size and weight. I also shoot the D850, 810 and 500 with F mount lens for my professional work. Looking forward to your review on this lens.
For ultra wide, generally, f2.8 isn’t that important. I use me 14-30 f4 S lens so much more than the 14-24 f2.8 F-mount brick of a lens, which is so heavy I leave it at home for all but a very few occasions. My dilemma is when should I go for the 24-70 f2.8 S lens, having the f4 version S lens and also the f2.8 F-mount lens. F2.8 is really useful in my work, but more high expenditure to go beyond my existing kit is a major consideration
Great first impressions! I have had this lens for a few weeks now and I am really impressed with the edge to edge sharpness I'm getting with this new lens. I am finding it much sharper than my F-mount 20 mm f1.8 and 18-35 mm f3.5-4.5 which it replaced. I am still planning on new Z mount 20 mm f1.8 for astrophotography when it comes out.
Wait a second... Your copy of the 14-30 f4 is sharper than the 20mm 1.8G??? That's insane. The 20mm is one of the sharpest F mount lenses I own. If this is true, I think I will need to try the 14-30 when I get the Z6.
Enjoy your channel, great insights. I have the Z6 with kit lens and am really enjoying it. I really want to do some astrophotography/Milkyway shooting and it seems that F2.8 is the most recommended aperture. Do you have a recommendation for Z lens and you could include ones that are coming out in the future? Thanks
Do you mean the ES-2? We actually purchased one and the 60mm F-mount macro lens late last year and made a short video on it - th-cam.com/video/MuEAzNp0PbY/w-d-xo.html - but you'll see more with it in the next few months. :)
I own both, image quality it's almost equal, the Z6 for is better with AWB and thanks to the EVF I do way less editing, also less weight, and video it's night and day compared to D750, I think comes down to work flow more than image quality, if you can get the Z6 if not, a D750 will serve you well.
I went for the 14-30mm f/4 because it is a native lens so I don't need an adapter, it is silent (important for video) and very lightweight and compact. That being said, I do adapt other lenses to my Z bodies. It's really a matter of preference.
Great stuff ! How is it for Vlogging or filming with ? Is the autofocus fast and would you use it to film a camping trip/vlog a trip ? I am curious to see what it's limits would be in dark environments like sunsets and or astrophotography/film. Thanks !! :)
I haven't tried it yet but I will see what I can do. I did get good astro results with the Z7 and the 24-70 f/4. You can see a few of those photos in this video... th-cam.com/video/QSi0nTB0Os0/w-d-xo.html
Great to hear you enjoy using the Z series camera and lenses. I hope they make an affordable APS-C mirrorless camera that uses the f-mount. Nikon would surely pass by all the competitors.
hi lady thanks for the review. can you , in the near future, also go into the lens/optical qualities/ ALSO IN COMPARISON TOT THE NIKOR Z35? BESIDES SHARPNESS I AM VERY INTERESTED IN THE CA EN DISTORTION ASPECTS. THANKS Henk
XQD is extremely reliable and the CF Express will almost assuredly be as well! I shot with a D700 for years with one CF card slot and I didn't think twice about it.
Stupidly expensive. Even with current Nikon summer promotion it is still £1299. I am going to stick with adapted FX lens. I can get minty 14-24 f2.8 in UK for
no matter how good it optically is, the thing that you need to unlock it for use, and that then it becomes the ugliest lens I know, and also not so compact anymore, makes this lens one of the worst ones I have ever used. Nikon started making stupid lenses.

i guess I am kinda randomly asking but does anybody know a good website to stream new series online ?
@Mustafa Manuel Flixportal :)
@Abdullah Chris thanks, signed up and it seems like a nice service :D I really appreciate it !
@Mustafa Manuel No problem :)

How about a review on the lens and negative package on the z6 to do negative/slide transfers.

I don't shoot this range enough so not in a rush and considering its cost I will wait for the 2.8

Should I get the 16-35 f4 F mount for my z6 or wait a bit longer and go for the 14-30 f3?

What picture do you take with ultra wide the most?
Did you do any astro/milkyway photos with the 14-30 at f/4. Dose it has any keepers working at f/4 14-20sec exposure with ISO 1600-3200?

Excellent review guys. Been eyeing getting into the Z system and funny enough it is the 14-30 f/4 and the 35 prime that I have analyzing.
Preordered it. Looks like a great lens for indoor real estate photography and rather waiting for the 20mm f1.8 prime for astro.
That 20mm prime will be an interesting lens!
I am looking foreward for the 85mm. 👌
Great to hear you enjoy using the Z series camera and lenses. I hope they make an affordable APS-C mirrorless camera that uses the f-mount. Nikon would surely pass by all the competitors.

I never did a review of that lens, did I? I’ll add it to the list!
@@LeighAndRaymond thanks
I am very curous how the 14-30 compares to the prime lens quality of the z35
With sensor and iso improvement the 2.8 ultra wides really won't be worth the asking price.
Native(non corrected) barrel distortion at the extremes ?
I don't mind correcting for vignette but prefer to not HAVE to for barrel ?
not going to get any Z series any time soon!probably when it gets 2 card slots!
2 card slots is a myth from days long gone.
@@ytr8989 not going to take any chances anyway!

What are Nikon thinking about the crazy pricing..
I think the pricing isn't so surprising based on other ultra wide options out there. Ultra wide is always a premium though :)
Canon: ,'nikon,hold my beer'
cant believe it doesnt have a MF dial...blowing my mind.
Ouch on pricing.
Ultra wide is always pricey :)
