    I want to point out that the pull out screen is excellent for those landscape photographers who shoot low on the ground like myself. No more laying on the mud : Nikon Z 6 is such a home run!!!!

      And the pull out screen is better for macro photography, too.

    Yes, my opinion is biased. I have been a Nikon user most of my life.
    I recently got a Z6 and I am super happy with it.
    It is like I am getting back into photography all over again.

    I've had my Z6 since early June. I love the camera and have been very impressed by what I can do with it. The only issue I have is keeping the sensor clean. It's a struggle keeping it free from dust during lens changes, even with a bulb to blow it clean every time.

    • @Golden_Spike
      @Golden_Spike 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I picked up the Yongnuo 50mm f1.8. For $62, I thought it was worth the risk. I was happily surprised with it. The stills are very clear. Very similar to the Nikon nifty fifty a friend owns and let me borrow. For video, the focus motors are too loud to use, but once in manual focus it's easy to do a nice smooth focus pull and quickly focus in on anything you choose. I leave my kit lens on most of the time and am leaving my adapter on the 50mm to make switching lenses easier. My father owns the Sigma 100-500 and I've had a lot of fun with it. I took it out into Utah's West desert South of Dugway and took way too many photos of wild mustangs.

      Although I don't own either the Nikon Z6 or the Canon Eos R dust on the sensor of the latter is mitigated by a "curtain" that shields the sensor when the lenses are changed.

    When using 32GB memory cards the Z6 uses FAT32 format which is limited to 4GB file size thus why Video is split in to 4GB files. 64GB and larger Memory cards are formatted in exFAT which is a better system and also has no 4GB limit

    Try setting up your F1 button to AF/[+} in Control Assignment f2. By tipping the F1, You then can switch between AF-S & AF-C using the back dial... then use the front dial to switch between all the focus screens for both.... After that adjustment, tap the front are back AF button to resume normal dial operations. Tap F1 any time for on the fly changes.

    Nice overview - recently bought Z 7 myself as already heavily invested in the brand. As to "battery", I already had 4 EN-EL15 batteries and the '7 added the fifth. Talking about battery life, I am with you on "exceeds expectations" based on a theoretical industry standard test that is not so representative of real life. That said, not that Li-Ion or Li in general, I guess, batteries do not like to get drained all the way, so from the life expectancy of a battery, it were better to not drain a battery below, say 30-40%. AND, I noticed with older Nikon DSLRs, that below 60% battery capacity, the camera could not reliably "do" i-TTL with my PocketWizard FlexTT5 transmitters anymore. So, when a local camera shop chain had these batteries on sale (and the chargers as well) I bought a bunch.

  • @jpdj2715

    Two card slots. Three other comments in this section about the subject: 1) Do you need two image formats? With XQD speeds you do not need two cards. 2) Protection against hardware/software failure is limited. 3) User error in buying the right quality and in card swaps may be the biggest cause of card failure. In short: if you really need two slots for "availability" then I would say you need two cameras. Shooting "tethered" in a studio does not need two cards, but needs a backup camera and even backup lenses maybe. Having bought into a Z 7 recently, I keep my old 24MP DSLR for some old lenses as a backup camera and for low light. Nikon needs to still do some work on the firmware, I feel, and when they do, I might add a Z 6. Then I would keep the '7 for landscapes, groups, wide angle, sunny (or flash) well lit circumstances and the '6 would do well enough for portraits up to a couple people and do excellently in low light.

    One of the first positive words about the Z6 from a Sony user 😍🤗 ...to be honest for me it's a way better camera than a lot of people think out there. I think that's because of all the "negative" feedbacks from a lot of TH-cam influencers who had all invest in a A7III few months before :D ...I had both the Z6 and the A7III for a month to test and I went clearly with the Z6. It makes so much more fun to shot with the Nikon ...in my opinion everything except the AF and the Batteries is better on the Z6 (a first generation camera)

    I own a Z6 & a D7500 and although I like the Z6 compared to any other mirrorless system, for me the traditional Nikon DSLR egononics of the D7500 provide a smoother work flow. Such a pity Nikon didn't include the traditional function buttons to the left of the screen on the Z cameras - hopefully next release will include them.

    You shouldn't underestimate Nikon, ok this may be their first mirrorless camera but it's far from their first camera and it really shows in ergonomics and layout. Also they made a wonder stroke by introducing a larger lens mount which is helping to deliver fantastic image quality and will come more to the fore as they introduce more Z lenses. There are certain aspects to this camera which are class leading, exciting times for Nikon users. cheers.

  • @jpdj2715

    Ports. Shooting with the Z 7 in a studio, I use tethering (through a fast cable into a computer that opens the image in the raw processing software). And I use an L bracket (Sunwayfoto). Here it is important that the L bracket has an opening that allows the cable to be used. The Z with the bracket and tethering work excellently. The side ports would not be used for flash AFAIK. The top "hot" shoe does that and it has excellent backward compatibility (my heavy investment in Nikon mentioned elsewhere is in the flash department). The only complaint here is the AF-assist lamp in the camera body that lights "on" in less-well lit environments. It is on the right (looking at the front of the camera) and is easily obstructed by "fast" lenses. In a studio that has no daylight (or little "available") you really need some modeling light in your studio strobes, or make sure another focus assist light is present. With the Z 1.8S prime lenses, the problem does not expose itself.

    I own the camera for 5 months now. The only negative I can point out is the lack of ability to use the touchscreen as a pad for focusing, when your eye is on the EVF. Yes, it has a joystick for that, but I prefer they included both. Cheap models from several years back like Panasonic GX85 have that and I personally use it regularly. Other than that - no issues. The new lenses are very good. I have 2 of them, both better than their F-mount equivalent. The RAW files are super flexible, you can really push them. The EVF is crisp and bright. I know the camera get criticized for poor tracking of fast-moving subjects. I don't shoot anything like that and have no opinion. I believe for anyone that want very good stills and very good video, from a full frame camera - it's great. Especially for the price they ask for it.

    I have had the camera for a while and find it goes through batteries rather quickly. It seems that with some modest shooting one battery last for a few about 4 hours. The batteries aren't too expensive especially compared to the media card. You definitely need more than 1 battery when you go out for the day. Three batteries is what I suggest so you won't get into a panic mode when you look to see how much power you have left. As to the lenses, I am disappointed with Nikon for not coming out with more lenses. Having to put on the mount adapter and using old lenses adds to the weight taking away from an advantage of having a lighter weight camera you are carrying around all day. Nikon is rather slow coming out with lenses which is not a problem I see as much with Fuji mirrorless cameras.

    Two card slots. From a camera-is-a-computer perspective, we could consider 2 card slots as a data safety solution compared to RAID 1 (provided the camera can write the same image to two cards at the same time). As a risk mitigation against hard drive (flash card) failure, RAID 1 however has a weakness. In the case of a software/firmware f-up e.g. in the driver or OS layer, both elements in a RAID 1 pair are corrupted at the same time. At the hardware level, we have to assume that the slots are controlled by an I/O controller chip and here the question is what level of redundancy there is: one chip with two channels or two chips with a channel each. My assumption is, there are no cameras out there with two chips, meaning if the chip fails both channels are lost. Also, RAID 1 has no data integrity protection that would guarantee that a "0" remains a "zero" or a "1" remains a "1". RAID 5 has this protection, by the way. If you Google for "spontaneous bit flips", you'll see there is a, statistically small but significant, real issue to consider here. And two slots offer minimal protection.

My older DSLRs have 2 slots and I always used a second card to record JPEG as it gives SOOC JPEGs that - I felt - were actually better than default Lightroom's. But I generally did nothing with the JPEGs, so after years of diligently copying the JPEGs from the cards to a hard drive, upon starting to use the Z 7, I now stopped doing JPEG altogether. B.t.w. running the Z 7 to expose for the highlights gives Raw shots that really need some processing as they look too dark and if the camera turns that fell into JPEG you had no use for it.

      Z lens are the onlys (at the moment) that give 5 axis stabilization (sigma and tamron will soon with future firmware update). Where as f mount Nikon and third party lens only give 3 axis stabilization but this is what got from both VR lens and previous "In Body Image Stabilization" cameras anyway I.e DSLRs and early generation mirrorless.

    • @CompleteNutta99
      @CompleteNutta99 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And yes anything that requires the adaptor will only get the same stabilization as the DSLRs (3 axis). But you will still get the auto focus with its ridiculously high af points as well as the af speed. To be honest there is no noticeable difference where using Nikon z lens and using any other lens f mount included. The only time it may end up being noticeable is if they bring out a 400mm or bigger z lens. Then the 5 axis will make a large difference.

    Outstanding video... still on the fence between Sony, Nikon, and Canon... was going to pull the trigger on the Z6, but then rented the A7III just to rule it out, and found that I actually really enjoyed it and found the lack of touch-screen options not that huge of a deal. I had the RP and loved Canon's new FV mode and the vari-tilt screen (I enjoy seeing my composition from challenging angles) but the overall image quality was lower than what I wanted... so in the end, I'm waiting to see what this year brings... or a killer deal on an A7RIII :). Great content, thanks again!

      @stanspb763 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Rent a Z6 or 7 for a weekend. The handling and build quality difference is an immediately seen difference with a much higher level of build and quality of the hardware. The lack of weather sealing in the Sony should be of concern of anyone who uses their camera in changing weather conditions or dusty environments. When you Do have a problem, Sony support and service is notoriously the worst in the industry and has been since their entry into photography. The speed of eye tracking is the only feature of the Sony that is reported about as an advantage but after firmware 2.0, the Nikon is very good and so is the Canon. But no other features are better or even promoted as being better on the a7xxx series cameras. EVF, controls, build, menu system, mount, cost of lenses and performance of the lenses offered thus far, connectivity, touch screen, and one issue that is not discussed properly, XQD, future-proofing, support, video performance, quality and future options with ProRes Raw coming in a couple months and more are all superior on the Z6/7 AF in low light is better also, -6ev.
      Ever notice that the Sony pushers, who receive a lot of money for their efforts, mention 1 card slot on the Z as being a problem but never mention the 1 slot is a pro standard, the only pro-grade system designed for critical applications instead of the very unreliable SD which was designed to be cheap to add to cameras or other consumer products. Anyone who has used SD much has had failures of hardware or data integrity. The card system was designed as a very low-cost temporary memory system for low-cost consumer products and was never intended for critical applications. SanDisk, Nikon, and Sony knew the problem and jointly created a new system designed from scratch that would be suited for mission-critical applications. The result was the XQD and it relies on a very advanced but standard bus system; PCIe+ instead of the 35-year-old floppy disk interface that has no error detection or correction, which is termed a dumb passive system that can't detect bad sectors. PCIe+ is a modern high-reliability system that is used for higher-end peripherals such as network SSD storage on web servers. The card itself has some really important differences such as the ability to detect and map out bad cells so no attempt is made to write to them, error detection and correction, unexposed contacts, physical robustness and many other features that make it the only card system suited to critical applications. The use of XQD/CF Express IS the pro-standard and the most serious cameras all use it. Panasonic S1 series and Nikon and Sony pro video cameras use it. Sony consumer division does not use it, but retains the SD due to cost of hardware but for their pro division such as ENG video cameras that start at about $25,000 and up, does use it and 1 slot.
      The bottom line is 1 XQD is far more reliable than 2 SD, orders of magnitude more reliable. The only reason to stay with SD is it costing only $1 to add to the camera in manufacturing. You have not heard of a single failure of data or hardware of the XQD and even Sony admits with the MTBF rating it is far superior to SD. They will use it even in the most cost-sensitive models if they want to up their game in video where they are lagging behind(they have to protect their more expensive pro video product lines there is a lot of pressure not to have sales of pro-grade models hurt by better-performing consumer division products). The result is the well-paid influencers on TH-cam refrain from mentioning SD is not the same as XQD. They only mention XQD as "too expensive" but comparing capacity and speed, XQD is no more expensive than the faster SD. Nikon cameras will also use the CF Express that is being made by more companies so prices will drop quickly, and will be far larger and higher speed...1,8gigabits/second with up to 8 data streams each.
      The 5 key features of the Z camera that make it the better long term investment: build/handling. Z mount(the widest and shortest flange in the industry that means industry leading edge to edge sharpness even from lightless expensive lenses, while Sony uses the smallest and weakest flange which means its lenses have to be heavier, more expensive and larger for any given level of performance), XQD/CFExpress, future-proofing, weather sealing, and IQ. It is a camera system that will last and continue to be updated protecting your investment long into the future because the hardware was almost overkill.
      Why would any manufacturer not weather seal their cameras in 2019 when it is the primary cause of camera fail and total loss? Ask Sony why they skimped so badly on that.

      Finding it on Google - it's $120 for 4 days, BUT that's for the camera (no lens). Renting a memory card is, at least, another $39. Rental on an FTZ-mount adapter is $48. Nikon Z 24-70mm f/4 S rental is $74. That's a whopping minimum of over $200 for a four-day rental. My own thought is to spend a day in reading and watching reviews and then decide whether or not to put that money towards the purchase. No Sorry being a D500 user the Z6 or the Z7 don't do 95% of what I need it to do 95% of the time. So many negatives to make me want to move to one, especially what I have been hearing with the AF not being 100% all the time.

    • @stanspb763
      @stanspb763 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Rent one for a week, accurance of AF is better than DSLR unless you shoot only in live view. I actually sold my D850 since it was collecting dust on the shelf after getting the Z6. I was expecting the Z6 to be a travel, casual camera but actually found it to be so good, my commercial work and portraiture ended up on the z6 with a higher keeper rate. In May they released firmware that transformed the AF system so it focuses in deeper shadows then any DSLR I have used including the D5. The changes to the AF were pretty dramatic for not only tracking speed and accuracy but also it adopted the Nearest Subject Priority so it no longer jumped to the background if focus was lost so it assumed the subject was on the same FP so recapturing after something blocking the subject, was very fast. It is a lot better at high ISO than the D500 and much better than the D850. Up to 102,000 ISO detail, color, contrast and noise was better than the D5!
      One of the real advantages is the Z mount and S glass. Wide-open, there does not seem to be any line with sharper corner to corner performance. Across the frame at 1.8 the 50 is the sharpest prime I have ever used. There are some that are similar in the very center but 2/3s out or in the corners, the S lens be just better. The 24-70 f/4 kit lens is optictially superior across the frame than either the F mount 24-70 2.8 G or E versions, which I have both so it was an easy comparison. The S lens with 2.8 aperture however is even better than the f/4. There is no zoom by and company that out resolves that lens. I have used them all, nothing comes close. We expect very good things from the 85 1.8 S that will be out next month, one I am anxious to get but the one I am saving for is the 70-200 2.8 that advanced testing suggests is like the 24-70 2.8, simply the best of any brand. The key was having the largest flange dia. and closest flange distance so some very good F mount lenses have been embarrassed by the smaller, lighter lower cost S lenses of the sane FL
      To dismiss the Z6 just because some youtube personality is pushing another brand is pretty short-sighted particularly since the most popular are not even photographers but earn large sums of money influencing viewer. .

    Ok,so I agree with the ergonomics and IDEA of the camera,yet at the time,I was coming from a Sony A Series,and I was seeking something solid and which was going to be up to standard.I'm never concerned with weight/size because I'm not a whining weakling that cannot carry the cinderblock camera i have now.I was going to get the Z6 as a second camera,because coming from two card slots from way back,i wasnt going backwards for my primary.Then i read about some AF issues,which apparently got some correction in firmware updates,so I still thought it was ok.Then when the recalls came,i just walked away,so hopefully,they will be fixed.Here's the FACTS>>>>.Nikon came out with that amazing D850,so there is NO EXCUSE for a 100+ year old imagine company to follow up with anything with blatant problems,crippled features,and recalls.That means there are some quality control issues,period,so if anyone has anything to say about what he said about changes,all of that should have been addressed BEFORE they released the Z Series offerings,DUHhhhhhhhhhh...If you are doing something for so long,you should get it right and be consistent.
