- Thrill Drive is an arcade-only Racing Game series by Konami. Although not well known outside of Japan, it is notable for being one of the original influences for the Burnout series
Set on public roads across the world, the game simulates racing around crowded cities, where the risk of crashing into civilian traffic is prevalent. The objective across the game is to reach the goal within a set time limit while moving carefully through heavy traffic. The player can race in various cars ranging from a sedan to a tour bus.

This game is weirdly dark and unnerving, after you crash, the game just change its atmosphere, the blue sky becomes a dark sky like a overcast, the soundtrack changes to a organ that sounds like its from a horror game, feels like that you should not have crashed your car, feels like it was a mistake

Man the total tonal shift of the game after the first crash you do in a race is mildly unnerving. Gone is the quick paced music and bright colors, it being replaced by a horror sounding organ drone and dark muted colors as if it was going to rain.
It’s like the first Burnout with the music change from too many crashes but this takes it to another level and I love it.

And then Thrill Drive 3 came out and did the opposite, no crashing jumpscare and the "crash" theme sounds almost metal. I do love the "Horror racing" tone to TD1
You know how a lot of the Hot Pursuit-focused Need For Speed games changed from licensed music to serious in-house music once a Chase started?
Thrill Drive did that but for it's crashes. Its a good way to set the tone.
I'll say, it's as if you've gone from playing Burnout, to playing Twisted metal Black.

Finally i found it, i remember playing this game on some local arcade when i was a kid. And then completely forgotten about it and the only thing i remember is that i got traumatized by the screaming and the ambulance sirene in which I've still remember till this day. I've been trying to find the game and finally i found the name of the game.
It such weird game yet unique , started as a fun game and it completely changes its tone after crashing.

You should play the burnout series (they were inspired by this game, all the traumatizing is replaced with action fun mostly)

@@stateyournameplease Burnout 3 has creepy ambient when you crash and use the after touch. After being aware of that, everything the DJ Stryker says comes off super creepy. Like he's some sadist who encourages the players to kill and get themselves killed. It really changes the vibe of the game just like this Thrill Drive does after you crash the first time.

I've never actually gotten around to noticing the police doors open at 2:35 before. Didn't think there was that much detail.

The police gets out to close the scene but then gets absolutely destroyed by your car. Seems about right

How did they get the rights to these cars? Usually games that deal dark tones can’t get rights to cars (eg Burnout)
If you look closely at 12:28, you can see the driver thumped out of the windshield and a model of a police coming out of the car.
There's blood as well.
If this is Burnout’s main inspiration, it makes sense why the Burnout Series was popular in Japan.
Hell the First Burnout game is pretty much a carbon copy of this game:
A Time Limit based checkpoint system
Directions given at every major turn
Music turns Gloomy after crashing
Similar car selection which also includes trucks
Checkpoint/Opponent arrow indicators
Cinematic crashes that effect your score
Hell even the menu interface is eerily similar to Burnout’s
Burnout 3 Takedown and Revenge impact time sounds (both beta and final) was also definitely inspired by Thrill Drive
Even the way the car turns and the HUD is identical.
Went from a friendly race to a race to the death real quick.
I used to play this game with dad at SM North Edsa back when the arcades were nostalgic. This, Initial D, and Maximum Tune were my favorite arcade games that I played with dad sitting on his lap.

@@arcadeguy781They were definitely inspired by the crashes, but Burnout is different in terms of speed. Thrill drive just plays like every other racing game at the time.
Minus the outrun and replace the Burnout with Thrill Drive... And you got Burnout 3.
I think it was a missed opportunity everytime you crash the track stays the same but throughout every time you crash the music gets more intense the GPS lady gets more unnerving and the atmosphere turns apocalyptic and pedestrians start screaming like they are trapped in hell

The 2nd game adds an R34
And a truck. The third game also has a giant rubber ducky and a crane
feels like they tried to get the cars that get into the most of accidents
Now I see where Burnout got it's horrific elements from.
It's funny, I remember seeing this in an arcade 20 or so years ago. I didn't catch the name of it back then, I just remembered that it reminded me of Burnout. Years went by and I could never find out what the game was called. I even started to think that it didn't exist and it was just my imagination that had made it up.
And would you know it, randomly, this pops up on my TH-cam front page :).

I used to play this in the arcades here. The Bus was my favourite, because you could hit things and survive.
When you crash, it really scares you as the thud + scream is really loud.
You really need the steering wheel to play though, it seems like you're having real trouble driving
I've been trying to find this game FOR YEARS. I remeber seeing it in a local arcade when i was a kid and getting absolutely scared for the music and the screams. Completely forgot it and then it came back to my head years ago and finally found it. Funny to see other people in the comments with the same story. Such a weird dark game but now as an adult looks kinda fun and not terrifying hahahahah

This game sends a message. That people say I got this or I'm good at driving, but having a car is like having a loaded gun. Once you crash in someone, you will lose your life, or the person dies for the crash

Yu-gi-Oh forbidden memories also had an incredibly creepy and awesome tone. The music was super dark and creepy and 3D monster models were straight up out of a nightmare. The whole atmosphere was dark and scary it was so awesome.

I always felt like they had the 1 crash and the 5 crash songs backward. The haunting drone should be the "you really messed up" song, while the mild panic "dun dun dun" jaws thing should be after 1 or 2.

I kind of wish burnout did the thing where the weather gets worse the more you crash. The music change is a bit annoying as you spend so much time with one note droning. (Works great first time you hear it. Not so much when its the whole game).
The scream is a bit cheesy and the overlay “aaahh” face a bit much.
Maybe a leas stock sounding scream and more variety to multiple more real sounding ones.

Very cool, I went to test here today but the game has a problem on the screen, I even tried to see if there was something in the settings of the game itself. showing two screens, player 1 and player 2 at the same time ^^

the only way this game would be more nighmare inducing is if it showed the obituaries of all the people you killed along the way.
Damn I've been playing the OG Burnout for over 20 years and I just now realized just how big of a rip-off it is of this game. I still enjoy the first Burnout, but I really want to try this game now. I'm so glad the Burnout series started getting its own identity with Burnout 2 onwards.

If you think the 3rd one lost the fear factor then stay away from the often forgotten 4th one. They "rebooted" it to a true Arcade Racing Game with power-ups, forgetting what separated Thrill Drive to the rest.
